View Full Version : Good news and bad news on the same day... ain't that how it always is?

So, earlier this morning I was feeling really good. The home equity loan came through - check in hand. A huge weight lifted off my shoulders, the ability to pay off residual debts from my divorce, do some very necessary things to This Old House to maintain not only its livability but its resale value.
And then! My roommate stopped by the house - she's been house-sitting for the past week and needed to stop by to get some things for her vacation starting tomorrow - and as we had a glass of wine together and watched the debate she told me that she and her boyfriend (who lives in San Diego) are going to start looking for a new place.
Now, this is not a big surprise in and of itself, but last time we talked about the situation she had indicated that it would probably be at least til next summer til they made that "move". But she recently got a promotion and huge raise, which translates to her being able to do that sooner than anticipated. Which I have NO problem with whatsoever - things, situations change unexpectedly, that's just the way it goes. I entirely understand her need for her own space (with him) as this house is small even for being 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths - so it's all good in the neighborhood. Just sort of unexpected and now I am unsure of what to do.
Meaning, getting the home equity loan basically put me ahead. Without a roommate, I will be behind again. Unless I get another roommate, which is an unappetizing prospect, because since my divorce I've been lucky to have first JD (Ensign Steve, xoxo :) ) and then Cheri, a longtime and super-compatible friend. I just don't want to do the stranger roommate thing again. I would almost rather sell this place and get the hell out of dodge. I've been here almost 10 years, and there are many ghosts here* that I wouldn't mind leaving in the dust.
Anyway, it was sort of one of those one-two punch days, when nothing is what it seems or stays static for more than two minutes.
*not real ghosts, just the mental kind ;)

The world is your oyster Lauri. You probably have the most wide open option of doing whatever the hell you want than you have ever had or ever will have. Be happy, and give yourself some time to brainstorm...no matter how wacky the idea, write it down and consider it.
I am somewhat envious :)

Thanks you guys, and, ES - why guilty looking smile? Silly girl ;)
I hear ya Lady. There does indeed seem to be a wide world of possibility open to me, I guess I am just tired of change - HERE - and would rather make change somewhere else, other than constantly being in the same place with people coming and going, if that makes sense.

/me wonders who will make the first offer to move in...
I hope it works out for you, Lauri, whatever you decide.

Erm, be careful with that one. You never know where that kind of thinking will take you! :P

In all seriousness, if you need a place to stay for a bit to get your head straight, you're welcome here.

Sell the house, buy something smaller, and keep the change. I know the question of whether to stay where you are or move somewhere else is the bigger one.

Congrats on the loan, Lauri, but I'm sorry you're having to deal with Cheri leaving right now. :(

I definitely don't blame you for not wanting a stranger as a roommate...I've always adamantly refused to bunk with a stranger.
As for advice..yeah, sell the place, get something within your means, and pocket the change.

Of course my living room couch is always open to a guest or two (dogs included), but I'm pretty sure you don't want to move to Minnesota - especially at this time of year. (We can expect our first snowfall in four to six weeks, and it's all downhill from then until April). Plus I'd have to explain to Sarah why there's a hot babe sleeping on my couch.

On the other hand, I'd have no Sarah to explain anything to, and half of my (King size) bed is open as well as the futon... :D
But then again, this is a very backwards fucking state, and winter is soon approaching. However, from what I've heard, winter down here is a cakewalk compared to winters back up in ND.

Hey, I could sell the house and become a peripatetic writer, roaming the country crashing with various FF'ers and other 'net friends. Yeah! That could be fun...
(I just had a vision of riding a motorcycle with Dempsey in a sidecar, wearing goggles and a flying scarf like Snoopy. Man, I definitely didn't get enough sleep last night... )

That does sound fun. I saw a movie last night wherein the protagonist was a writer, and it made me crave being a writer myself.

:D That's a cute image.
Btw why don't you have a custom title? Or do you? :didi:

And no, the irony of my yearning to be a professional writer yet being unable to come up with any more elegant way of phrasing it than the above was not lost on me.

I like the vision (the peripatetic writer one, but hmm, also the Snoopy one ( The problem with Snoopy is that he would want to drive :yup: ).
But I realise I don't actually know what you do for a living. Are you free to roam? And next, would you enjoy it? How much change do you relish?
I know how you feel being bounced around like this. But it does sound like an opportunity.

Well, my BIL is supposed to be moving out of the house soon, so I'll have a spare room available!
ES - nice to see you back again!

That does sound like fun! Why couldn't you? I'm fixin' to have my very own place in Georgia the first part of next year, and you know you're always welcome on my comfy couch, too. :)
Thanks, Shake.
