but I'll do it anyway, just to get started out on the right foot.

1. How'd you find the Freethought Forum?

I followed a reference from another board.

2. Are you a member of any other online forums? Which?

Yes. JADE, The Auel Board, Ebla Forum and The Galilean Library

3. How do you feel about smilies (emoticons)?

They have their uses, often overused.

4. How do you feel about 2000+ smilies?

Having options is always nice.

5. Is flaming:
A. Hilarious
B. Beneath you
C. Irritating as fuck

A. If done well. C. If done poorly.

6. Is vulgar language:
A. Hilarious
B. Beneath you
C. Irritating as fuck

Mostly unnecessary, occasionally appropriate.

7. Why did the chicken cross the road?

To prove to the raccoon that it could be done.

8. Who pays for your food?

Ultimately, my employer.

9. What's one thing you've always wanted to do but never have?

Island hop the Pacific in a copra boat.

10. What is your single favorite place in the world?

I'm still looking.

11. What's the significance of your username?

My first parish as a Lutheran pastor was on the Seward Peninsula in Northwestern Alaska. In the Inupiaq dialect an angakuk is a shaman. Seems to suit me.

12. What about your avatar?

Meant to reflect my profession while also suggesting that I don't take my self too seriously. :preach:

Any more questions?

Welcome to :ff: Angakuk.

I lurk on the Auelboard quite often and recognised your name from there. You'll also find another member from there over here. I leave it up to that person to make themselves known. :D

You didn't have to fill in the form, but I'm delighted you did since I now know you've led an interesting life indeed. What is a copra boat?

Oh, and if by some odd, inexplicable chance you come to feel that smilies are in fact a tad overused here, there is an option in your User CP (click User Tools - Edit Options) to disable their display across the board.

Welcome to FF, Angakuk. :welcome1:

BTW, angakuk, given your location in Iowa, I figured your username was made from something like Anglo in Keokuk or Anglican in Keokuk. Wholly different, eh?

Really? They make boats of out that? Or am I just being really gullible and falling for it again. :dopey:There is an entire industry revolving around copra. Boats go from island to island buying copra, they take it to mills where the coconut oil is squeezed out. That island Mel Gibson bought is or was a coconut plantation. Those big plantations are mostly a thing of the past, but the copra trade is not.

Ohhhh... Copra boat. As in boat used in the copra trade. Well, Angakuk, as you see I have no compunction about making a total ass of myself in intro threads. Anything to create a welcoming environment, donchaknow. :blush2:

Welcome Angakuk!

Although I haven't had the courage to come head-to-head against you on Jade (and ECfans), you might remember me.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Hi Miisa. Yes, I recognize you. Surely I am not all that intimidating.

The whole copra boat in the Pacific thing was inspired by a favorite television series from my childhood years.

Adventures in Paradise Theme

"Adventures in Paradise" by Lionel Newman

Adventures in Paradise Tidbits

The boat was an 85 foot schooner named the Tiki and is anchored in Papeete, Tahiti.

Set in the South Pacific, Adventures in Paradise centered around handsome Gardner McKay, whose character, Adam Troy was an American Korean War veteran who carried cargo and passengers from port to port.

At first filming was done on the 20th Century Fox backlot and critics complained. So they began doing some exteriors in the South Pacific. James Michener, after selling the idea to TV execs, backed out of the project.

But who cares about the downside? Ladies had McKay to look at and men had plenty of Tahitian beauties to oogle.

The show didn't do much for McKay's career but he redirected his talents to writing and has had several successful books.

Gardner McKay died in 2001.

Prevail is a bit strong. Let's just say that I held my own.

BTW, pepper is nothing to sneeze to at.

Welcome, Angakuk! Hey, some of my family is still Lutheran.

As far as island hopping goes, I had a friend from the military who took his terminal leave (vacation used at the end of one's enlistment) and went to Yap and Palau, with just a pack and a bunch of MREs (meal, ready to eat) with him. He sent some to himself through the mail, general delivery, since he couldn't carry it all. Came back with a great tan, looking all scruffy, but having had a good time.

This guy was the youngest eccentric I'd ever met. He drove a '59 Edsel and was briefly married to an extremely hot woman, and I can't remember whether it was his or her parents that never knew they were married. He was about 6' and lanky. Not bad looking, but no <insert favorite male celebrity>.

But I digress. Welcome to the FF!

Glad you liked it. The raccoon, however, remained unconvinced and was crushed by the chicken's logic.
