I've just asked the seller how much it weighs, so that you can factor in postage.

When he/she replies, you will see the question and answer. :)

Legs
01-05-2006, 03:11 AM
oh I am not really worried about the shipping costs... even if it is a hundred it's still worth it. I am only concerned as obviously this is not an international thing, it's for local buy/sell - there was no choices for other countries at registration.

I just don't want the seller to be annoyed at me for not being from that neck of the woods.

crossing my fingers :crossed:

If you have any problems, you can work through me. I visit Tauranga often, especially in the summer, and I can collect it and post it on to you.

The only problem is that I cannot pay upfront, but we can work it out if there are any hassles.

You'll have your new old microscope come hell or high water, honey bee! :D

Wow, that's beautiful. Is it common to find them so complete, Legs?

Legs
01-05-2006, 03:44 AM
I'm not really sure how complete it is liv, and the condition is hard to see from the pic... it may not be the original lacquer and the round base looks a little dodgey.

The little drawer of 'stuff' I can see a fish plate, and a few objectives but they could be junk and not original to the scope. The little ivory/mica slides are a good sign though. :yup:

The case is rough, but I love that pyramid shape. Most importantly it is signed by the maker - signed scopes are more valuable than unsigned scopes, even when the unsigned is in better condition.

I just love this Culpeper style and I am determined to have one on my desk one day. It would be awesome to win this miscroscope for such a good price... note the size of it - 10 inches tall not including the base... I have seen microscopes of this style 12 - 13 inches tall - this one is petite.

Back to your question about completeness.... many microsopes come with lots of stuff, it is truly amazing what bits and pieces survive the years.. given this is ca. 1850 (so the seller says)

Petra

Ask the seller questions if you need to clarify anything, Legs. They appear to not know much, but you never know - they may just reveal something that is meaningless to them, but to you it is gold.

Postage info:

Seller said it was about 4kg without packaging for post. I upped that to 6kg to allow for packing and error in approximating weight.

Price to post at 6kg is $111.70

You've been outbid by a user with a name that suggests he is an Australian Doctor.

It's only Thursday evening, 8.20pm over here - so might be worth playing a waiting game. You've got about 44 hours up yer sleeves.

I'm not going to tell you about the amazing property that's for sale in the Far North, though. I want that to stay totally Kiwi owned, and I rillyrilly hope my old friend TC buys it. He's pretty keen, and it's simply paradise. A real Garden of Eden. :yup: I'll show it to you after he's [hopefully] bought it. A piece of land to truly covet, imo. Youse foreign fullas aren't having that, that's fo'sure! :nuhuh:

If TC doesn't take the property, I will indeed tell you about it.

I can tell you that the house is a ramshackle shambles that probably wasn't built with any kind of permit, but it's not the house that makes the place special - it's the land and the location. If I had a spare $150,000NZ I'd totally buy it for myself. But, alas, I only have $37.56. :sadcheer:

TC gets first dibs, after that I'll tell you. :)

That ausdoc must have some sort of automated bidding thing going on, his/her last 3 bids have been $5 over the previous one, and on the exact same minute as the previous one.

Petra

You're not allowed to arrange private exchanges and contact details after an auction has started. When I first wrote to the seller, I entered my email address with the @ symbol...after a awhile, I realised it had not gone through, and so I figured the @ symbol was stopping the posting of my question, so I changed it to "at". The question showed immediately after in the open viewing area. :( I was foolish and got busted for it, for I think.

Don't worry, though - I'm quite sure that if TradeMe do anything, I can contact them and sort it out.

Kinda loses the fun psychological aspect of an auction if you just set some parameters and let the software do the bidding, doesn't it?

Maybe it takes some of the 'auction' fun out of it, but 'online auction' is a beast unto itself. I do it on ebay all the time. You tell the software what is the maximum you are willing to pay, and then you can go to work all day and it will outbid everybody else by $1 until you max out. It's fair, because anybody else can do it too. Plus, you still have some of the auction fun when you get home and from work find out that even your maximum has been outbid, and you decide you do still rilly rilly want it and up you bid some more. :giggle:
