View Full Version : SNL fans?
I discovered Saturday NIght Live when I was around twelve or thirteen. I grew up in a very repressed home and was more repressed from being homeschooled by this time. I spent the night with an older cousin who just moved back from up North. She was worldly, drank, beautiful, and watched this show with me. I laughed hard, got most of the jokes, even understood the offbeat humor.
The only other thing I saw that was close to this was the occasional British comedies I saw on PBS.
Anyway, I love this show, sometimes it sucks, but I still see it as one of the cutting edge comedy leaders in Amerca. To me, watching the old clips is almost like seeing an artform.

I'm with you, Beth. I didn't really know about SNL until the early 90s - the great Carvey-Myers era - but I love watching the reruns. Last night's opening sketch on the Presidential debates was excellent.
Have you seen the 101 Greatest SNL Moments on E? They've been showing it all this week.
Well, no, us hurricane weary have had no cable since Jeanne;), but I would have loved to have seen it.

When SNL first came on back in the 1975 I couldn't watch it because the local Oklahoma City NBC affiliate refused to carry it, too controversial for the Bible Belt, I suppose. I first saw it in 1976 when I lived in Beaumont, Texas for a year. Then I moved back to SNL-deprived Oklahoma. It wasn't until I moved to the Tulsa area in 1980 that I was able to get it, but they didn't show it until after midnight so they could show their "Saturday Night Movie" first. Imagine my delight at seeing it at 10:30 PM like god intended in godforsaken Wyoming. I missed most of the Ackyroyd, Belushi, Chase and Bill Murray years, thank goodness for reruns on Comedy Central. I've been a fan ever since its inception, but I do believe the best SNLs were in the Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers era, which came after what I thought was a dry spell from 1984-1986.

Oh man. I was too young to really get all the jokes and I had no concept of the fact that they were all stoned outta their minds, but I loved the show back then. In case anyone didn't recognize just the last names... Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner. Comedy geniuses, the lot of 'em. My brother, sister and I must've run around acting out the Landshark sketch for months afterward. "Candygram". And Eddie Murphy doing Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood. "Today's word is 'bitch'. Can you say 'bitch', boys and girls. I bet you can. Go to your mommy and try it out. Say bitch! And if she slaps you, you said it right!" Priceless.

Ironically I missed most of that era having given up on SNL when the old crew faded away. So my first exposure to Mike Myers was So I Married An Axe Murderer which I finally saw around 1994, and then I came to know Dana Carvey through, um, that funny TV show he starred in. Of course I saw Wayne's World eventually too, and by now I've seen a lot of reruns of various SNL's from that era, but not many. I'd like to see more.
Edited to add: Wait, that's not Dana Carvey. Shit I'm losing my mind. Who's the guy ... David Spade! That's him. That show is what I'm talkin' about. I'm not sure how I've gotten to know Dana Carvey except from SNL reruns and Wayne's World.

"Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood"? There's a knock on the door. "It's the landlord, boys and girls. The word for the day is scumbucket. Can you say scumbucket, like the landlord is a scumbucket?" I used the term scumbucket ever since. Damn that Eddie Murphy.

Hehe. My Mom told me that scum is slang for ejaculate, and that scumbag used to be a euphemism for condoms.

*reads post* I got into it during the Carvey-Meyers era as well, my favorite characters being the Church Lady and Linda Richman. As much as I love Mike Meyers, nothing will ever be as funny as the seasons with Dan Ackyroyd, John Belushi, and Gilda Radner era. There's just a certain rawness, both in production and humor, that made it so fantastic. It's really just a ghost of its former glory these days.
SNL is my favorite skecth comedy show. Next comes Kids in the Hall. I've noticed MadTV seems sort of a copy-cat. Some of their skits cheaply eminate SNL skits, like there cheesy version of 'The Ladys Man'. Only Tim Meadows can pull it off! I also like how SNL has a big star every week. You get to see another side of them. My favorite SNL is when Jim Carrey hosted.
