View Full Version : The Year Ahead

I've often heard that it's important to have goals, so I've decided that by the end of this year, I will:
Play a Mozart sonata on the piano.
Speak a romance language, fluently.
Diversify my portfolio.
Challenge Chuck (the Iceman) Liddell in the octagon.
Finish up my doctorate.
Put depression and anxiety behind me.
Buy a mansion and a yacht.
What are your goals?

Get an xbox 360 and plasma or other flat screen hdtv plus surround sound system.
I like goals that simply involve writing checks and getting shiny new things over those goals that require hard work and self growth.
I am flirting with buddhist practice (the meditation stuff :buddha: , not the religious stuff), but the jury is still out if I want to make regular practice a goal for the year or not. Involves a lot of the self growth thing. Self growth can be overrated

My goals:
Learn the true meaning of Columbus Day.
Enjoye a brief but memorable stint as Sideshow Steve.
Become the most popular girl in school, but blow it by being conceited.
Learn the true meaning of winter.
and if I have time:
Learn Sanskirt
Divide by zero
That is all.

Well, I've already done a Plan of Action in another thread, but my material goals are:
Move house to a flat in a more central location in the city
Find a literary agent - and sell my book to a publisher
Become more happy with my physical appearance and if I'm not, then change it so I am

I wondered if you were one and the same.

My goal for 2006 is to let go of the animosity I feel toward Christians. I realize how irrational it is to blame Christians for the breakup of my marriage. The pastor of my ex-wife deserves all the glory for that. I need to stay focused on the fact that some Christians actually are kind and thoughtful people.

Damn, I can't tell which goals are serious & which are pie-in-the-sky ;)
I have some goals but now I'm thinking maybe they're not ambitous enough. Back to the drawing board with me.

Pie in the sky?! All of the goals stated in the OP are completely legitimate, and some are as much as 20 years old now. Just because I've never taken a step toward accomplishing any of them doesn't mean they aren't serious.
It's possible that I need to set my sights a bit lower, though. I've considered that.

Have you picked which one?
Id like to learn Pachelbels Canon for violin. Think i should manage it.
I sit my piano diploma very soon so i hope to achieve distiction in that.
Also want to win my debating competition at St. Andrews uni, pass my exams with A's and then have good summer holidays. I havent thought further than that yet!

OK, I've narrowed it down a little. But don't hold me to these, as I'm a little shy of committment and easily distracted... ;)
Make a lot more art
Sell a lot more art (for a lot more $$$)
Make my business much more profitable while also making it much less time-consuming (IWO, work less/earn more)
Get more teeth fixed
Buy a winning Lotto ticket
Get a new avatar
Get organized

Buy a winning Lotto ticketMy goal is to find a winning Lotto ticket. Since I was in my 20s and California started with the Lotto, my financial plan for the future has been to win the Lottery. But I felt I was doing nothing toward this goal, namely, I did not buy Lottery tickets.
However, upon further thought, I considered that the chances of me winning the Lottery are so astronomically low that factoring in the chances of me finding a Lottery ticket doesn't really change the odds significantly.
Therefore, there is no reason to buy a winning Lottery ticket, I simply need to be prepared to find that winning Lottery ticket. I am constantly working toward meeting my current goal of finding a winning Lottery ticket.

Get better at physics. Last semester, I just barely pulled a B out of my ass, so I hope that I will do well this semester.
Become more advanced at programming. I don't see this realistically happening in the near future, though, since I didn't register for any related classes or buy any books or anything.
Read at least 50 books, as a conservative estimate. I own far more unread ones than otherwise.
Yeah, I don't aim very high. :oscarwin:

There's a shocker.

The best way to get better at programming is to write programs. So get coding! You don't need a class or a book to make you better. Or do you want to end up living in a van down by the river? :glare:
My goals for 2006:
- Clean the house
- Paint the shutters
- Become independently wealthy
- Fly a plane
- Solve world hunger
- Go back to school
- Learn something new
- Lose weight
- Do something fun
- Run for public office
- Calculate pi to 314159265 digits
- Star in a musical on Broadway
That should keep me busy.
