I see them there, perpetually viewing smilies in Who's Online. Them rat finks better credit the artists is all I can say, because so far only one person has approached me for permission ( :deadhorse: is being used on a Buckeye sports forum! :wriggle: ), and since he asked that means he's not a rustler.
I know, I know... It's the web. Shit gets ganked and that's life. I can still brood about it though. :brooding:

You know! Snoopy as a vulture, 'cause he looks all broody with his shoulders hunched. I didn't think I was being obscure. :kickscan:

In Texas, cattle rustling was punishable by death. I see no reason why smilie rustling would be any different.

liv, are you talking about other sites hotlinking to the smilies hosted here? Or ones that have actually copied them - and if so, how did you find out?
For the former case, we need a server hack or script that replaces all images linked from other sites with discomonkey. That'll soon stop 'em.
For the latter ... I think you can save comments in GIF files. Something like "I agree to donate $25 to the Freethought Forum" would be a start.

:chuckle: That would be just wrong.

I don't mind hotlinking, actually. It's hardly a major drain on our resources, and most importantly, it doesn't change the filenames so the artists are still recognized.
It's the copying that bugs me, but as you imply, I don't know for a fact that any of the rustlers are doing it. I have serious suspicions, though, based on behavioral quirks like hours (literally) spent viewing smilies. That strikes me as a rustling expedition because who's going to spend all that time making a list of URLs for hotlinking?

 I could sue the entire intarweb!

Maybe they are just mesmorized by the enormity and glory of the horde. :redhoard:

So it's like a joybrowse, you mean? No ulterior motive? I suppose it's possible. :para:
They are just wondering why discomonkey isn't there.

I am indeed talking about outsiders, Debbie -- mainly people who have never posted and probably haven't even glanced at a thread. You definitely don't count. :eskimo:

Can you implement a no-right click and save protocol? Most of the rustlers are probably just out to grab a few cool smilies and any obstacles placed in their path'll likely deflate their enthusiasm.

That's like rilly rilly easy to get around.
I know cuz the site where Brandi has her baby picks up tried that bullshit on me. :muahaha:

yeah, it's easy to get around though it might deter those who are too lazy to do the work. Alternatively, one can put up a notification requiring people to ask for permission before copying the smilies. It's not much, but at least people'll know what's your official policy and who knows, it might get you more messages actually asking for permission in your box.

People use r-click to get hotlinking info too, though, and I'm loathe to stop that, especially since I'm probably the number 1 hotlinker to the hoard. :blushes:

Well if she wants to show affection, I can think of a better way for her to do so. She can add discomonkey to the hoard. I am sure you would agree with this eminently reasonable suggestion.

livius drusus: Damned rustler keeps coming by every day for hours. Now is the winter of my discontent. :brooding:Is it the same guy? Two of those might be slimshady and me. We have been known on ocassion to hotlink some ff smileys on another forum.
Recent example:
http://mu.nu/Forums/viewtopic.php?t=8111
Should we stop doing that? Or perhaps I could at least give explicit credit and a link: "One or more of the smileys in this post was was pilfered from the FreethoughtForum."

No sir, definitely not either of y'all. I hotlink off the hoard myself, and I have no problem with our members doing the same.
It's the people who only come here to rustle that get me down. If they're hotlinking I don't mind, but if they're actually saving the files and using them wherever without checking with me first, then I do mind. Maybe I should just contact them and ask what's up.
