Fortean Times (http://www.forteantimes.com/index.html) - This is probably the most fun I've ever had reading a magazine. Conspiracy theories, cryptozoology, UFOs, haunted houses, psychics, fairies: they've got it all, and it's not some breathless tabloid either. They just don't assume it's fake without looking into it, and it makes for some truly wonderful articles.
Archaeology Magazine (http://www.archaeology.org/) - Way too many ads and far too little magazine. OTOH, it's a good source for recent discoveries, studies, laws and interviews with pros.
Food and Wine (http://www.foodandwine.com/) - Part of me still thinks it's Gourmet and Bon Appetit's kid sister, but man does it have some great recipes. Ad nightmare, needless to say.
Cook's Illustrated (http://www.cooksillustrated.com/) - Absolutely unique in the annals of cookery. No ads. Amazing website. Amazing test kitchen. Amazing variety. It doesn't assume you know how to do something, nor does it patronize you.
And I just got a subscription to New Republic (http://www.tnr.com/) via my Salon membership but I haven't gotten my first issue left.
How about y'all? :playboy:

Nothing special really
Newsweek
US News & World Report
Consumer Reports
Discover
Actually, I'm letting "US News and World Report" lapse, the editorial staff tilts a bit more to the Right for my comfort. I've just subscribed to "Discover", used to subscribe to "Scientific American", but found it to be way too much for me. I don't have the scientific aptitude to truly appreciate the magazine. I'm hoping "Discover" is more layman-like.
And though I don't subscribe to "Cooks Illustrated", I agree that it is an amazing magazine. The illustrations alone are impressive.

I used to subscribe to Newsweek, but that was before I could find far better coverage online. By the end of my Newsweek phase, all I read was the quotes page. I really liked that quotes page.

Used to subscribe to several guitar mags, but since nu-metal arrived on the scene, I've let them all lapse. Still have piles and piles of old ones though, and unlike other sorts of old magazines, the sheet music in them has a very long shelf life, especially at the rate I'm (not) learning from them.

Right now, I just get The Nation, and...
this probably belongs in the Short Shameful Confessions thread, but...
some generic decorating magazine that I don't remember what it is.
My excuse is insomnia. When I can't get to sleep, I need something to distract me so I can get drowsy enough to fall asleep, and decorating magazines work for that. They don't put me at risk of getting all worked up, either positively or negatively. They're just pictures of furniture and paint and shit, so I look at them and I get bored enough to fall asleep.
There are a whole bunch of subscriptions I'd probably get again if I weren't all unemployed, though, like:
Adbusters. (http://www.adbusters.org) It's sometimes a little short on content, but it's beautiful.
Z Magazine, (http://www.zmag.org/) which I miss dearly.
Emigre, (http://www.emigre.com/EMagView.php) which I used to have a free 'professional' subscription to, and which I pined for after they cracked down on my worthless ass. Half the time, I didn't know what it was about, but it sure was purty.
Bust, (http://www.bust.com/index.shtml) which I am about 20 years too old for.
The Weekly World News, (http://www.weeklyworldnews.com/) which I just love so much I could die from it. I don't care if it's not a magazine. I'm just a terrorist that way.
Also, Columbia Journalism Review, Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, and a million other ones I used to get.

Recent Splurges:
National Geographic
National Geographic Travel-- Placed in the magazine racks I have conveniently located in my bathrooms
National Geographic Kids--- My 9 year old son loves this magazine and even noted that he read a book review and wanted a particular book because of that review that we saw in the airport bookstore. Of course I bought it for him.
I'd like to subscribe to some various other magazine sitting in my racks as well-- France, some sort of wine magazine. Since it is so easy to get recipes online, I don't bother with cooking magazines anymore.
I'm considering some current events magazines. I don't want one with dumbed down articles and excess cheesiness, nor one with excess my brain is bigger than your brain intellectualism. Picky, picky, I know.

Real Simple (http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/) -- kinda like a combination of Good Housekeeping (or one of those types), Shape and Sunset but for people who want to simplify their lives instead of go all Martha Stewart
Bird Talk (http://www.birdtalkmagazine.com/bt/) -- yeah, you read that right: I've got a parrot, so sue me. :parrot:
Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact (http://www.analogsf.com/0411/issue_11.shtml) -- one of the longest running publication for science fiction
TV Guide (http://www.tvguide.com/) -- yeah, sue me again. :P
Sound and Vibration (http://www.sandv.com/home.htm) - vibration and acoustic testing
PC Magazine (http://www.pcmagazine.com/) - I usually only look at this if I am thinking of buying something

I'm interested to read that you get these. We used to get my son Ranger Rick and my daughter Big Backyard. Now Esther is more Ranger Rick age we were looking for a new magazine for my son and tried National Geographic this year. Then we found out there is a National Geographic Kids, which we just signed up for for next year, instead of the adult magazine, after consulting him. We also get Discover Kids for the children.
Our magazines: we get Time and The Economist. My husband really likes the Economist - if you're looking for a good current events magazine. We used to get the Guardian Weekly (not really a magazine) but we realized we weren't reading it enough to justify getting it any more. He likes the Economist better.
Oh and we get Chicago Magazine because it has useful local info in it.
I also get Christianity Today :P

I secretly like The Economist for the general quality of their factual reporting, and even for the style of their occasional polemic, but it does need a disclaimer, in that it's The [Laissez Faire] Economist, pretty much. You need to take the bias with a grain of salt, or at least remember it's there. They are pretty smooth, and those free trade types are the masters of making opinion sound like truth with a big T.
I'd recommend The [Pinko] Nation as well. It's weekly (except for a while in the summer when it slows down to twice a month), and the reporting is just as good, and just as biased, as The Economist's.
Now that I think about it, those two subscriptions would be an ideal combination if you want good, concise, readable coverage and cranky commentary from a couple of different major angles.

The Economist, Games, MacAddict, Dragon.
Pretty much summarizes things, I think. Jesse gets SciAm and Science News. Also, I get "Intercom", the journal of the Society for Technical Communication, and maybe one or two other things we get just as freebies. But SciAm and Science News and the Economist are the "serious" reading, and Dragon, Games, and MacAddict keep the seebs amused.

I don't subscribe to it, but pick up every issue of North and South. Occasionally I'll get National Geographic or Skeptical Inquirer. Even more occasionally, I'll pick up other war or history magazines, depending on whether or not there is an article about one of favorite wars/time periods.

I would bet that a careful reader could find something in either MacAddict or Mother Jones.
Oops. I forgot Consumer Reports.
Anyway, MacAddict #99, page 57 has a guy in a ski mask with the caption "nothing can stop him. Except..." advertising a Mac firewall. Honestly, the ad is insulting to hackers everywhere, but... Why assume that it's a MAN in a ski mask? Can't women be vandals too?
You might also be able to do something with the entirely unattached photo of a smiling woman in the "Power Max" ad on page 70, who appears to be there simply because companies with ACTUAL WOMEN at them are very attractive to Mac users.
(Disclaimer: I make a chunk of my living using a Mac and writing about it, I'm not really that biased against macs.)

I was gifted with a Salon membership (thanks liv) and in turn received a free subscription to National Geographic Adventure, US News and Whirled Report (it's all about the spin, baby), Wired and the New Republic online. However I am in this silly forum far too often to find the time to read a bunch of magazines.

I don't get any mags (college student and what not), but I read most of Scientific American when I'm at home (my mother has a subscription). I also read bits and pieces of Newsweek when they have an interesting article. Everything else, I get online.

I don't subscribe to any. I go to Borders or the grocery store to pic up my mags. I get every issue of SciAm and Discover, I get Skeptics and sometimes Cosmo, if I am really bored and just want to look at pictures and read sex smut.
My husband and kids get other magazines, but I think Skeptics is winning out. It seems to be the preferred bathroom magazine and I noticed that everyone has mentioned articles in it.

I now subscribe to Nature Conservancy and Freethought Today.
Before I had online access to 9000 full-text journals, I subscribed to Smithsonian, Atlantic, Adbusters, National Geographic.
For waiting room reading material, I prefer Reader's Digest (for the schlocky humor) and People.... Ooops, that should be in Short Shameful Confessions.
I regularly thumb through Scientific American, Science News and New Scientist.... Honest.... I even read some of the articles.
I should probably subscribe to some archeology/history type journals, considering my interests, but now I have access to many online. It's not the same, though. No pecuniary interest...no commitment. Other things squeeze it out and it never happens. Having the mag sent to your door forces you to at least thumb through it.
