vm, two clubs and a dj party? I'm 32 not 22. Still, maybe the bong will get me through.

Here's a random bit of liviana for you, Ex-zombie: I really, really love balloons. Love them.

Buon compleanno it is, Scarlatti caro.

Shit, luna, now you've gone and added the drumroll and headbanging. By the end of the day I'm going to look like the guy saying "Bye" in Ymir's post.

Thank you, Farren. Is it the bonghits talking, or is that cake blinking?

Wow, Ymir's blood, you must have put your back into it because there isn't a flag among them. I call that classy.

Thank you kindly, LadyXoc. Especially for confirming that the cake is definitely blinking.

I'll do my utmost, Helen.

Grazie a tutti. :grouphug:

Happy Birthday Livius Drusus of the Temple Prostitutes, the Great Shadow Stallion welcomes you to another spinning of the disc of life.

"Oh she of the polished hooves so pink and buffed"
"Rein in your fear of the unknown for you will see the light"
"ablaze in the reflection of the ever slighty red hued."
"Torture not yourself with the sins of the past"
"live on in spendor and grace touching those around you"
"in the glow of your affable and captivating smile."
"Know that love as well as hate may be both your enemy and friend"
"but you will never know until you test the waters"
"Dive deep, live life, love now."

P.S.
The Shadow Stallion would like to remind you that you missed the last "Running of the Nude Prostitutes Marathon", and the following party at the Shadow Temple, he was very disappointed and ate a whole table of Harry and David Moose Munch to the chagrin of all the next day. He knows you were busy with the new forum, but he would appreciate a call.

Hi, livius! :birthday: I always liked the part in Alice in Wonderland where she's talking to Humpty Dumpty. He says "unbirthdays" are better than birthdays b/c you have so many more of them. He also says you should whip those words into shape and show 'em who's boss. I combined the two; I whip my birthdays into shape and have as many of 'em as I want, over and over again. That way, birthdays are "best" again, 'cause the party's never over!

I have only a partial report thus far, but at this point, it's sucks so hard I can hardly believe it. The furballs and cakes of dust it slurped our of the living room carpet were just astounding. I don't how they got such a bad gift reputation. They're the archetype of the uncaring husband present, but that's so wrong, man. There are just so many shitty vacuums out there and the good ones cost seriously coin. I'm always reticent to spend that kind of money on any appliance nomatter how desperately I might need it; that's why they make such awesomely fantastic presents.

Trust me, I spend like a fiend on the serious coin ones (well, ok, not the $2000 vacuums, but the $500 ones, yeah) and they have all pretty much broken my heart. That's why the dyson story is so compelling...

He he... No ma'am. It has a trap door kinda thingy which can't drop unless the canister has been removed. As long as you avoid taking out the canister and pulling a Buster Keaton or two over that deep pile, you'll be in the clear.

That, um, sucks. I think the most I've spent has been a couple of hundred and I was massively bitter over that much waste. Ah, but none of them have harnessed the power of a hundred suns or whatever the hell is going on in there which keeps the spooge miles away from the filters.

Hi pesci--further update: It sucks like hell. I vacuumed the bedroom last night, which I had recently steamcleaned, and all kinds of stuff still came up out of the pile.

The attachments are easy to use, in the sense that they're easy to attach. However, at the moment, it's a little difficult to use them because the hose is really tight (I guess because it's new), and thus as one tries to bend it through 180 degrees down to the floor it kind of tries to come back up. It's a bit easier if you tilt the main unit over a bit so that the hose doesn't have to bend quite as far, but then you're somewhat encumbered with dragging around the main unit at the same time as you're moving the hose and attachment around. So using the crevice attachment wasn't pure ease, but I reckon using the pet hair attachment for what it's meant for (say, cleaning out dog hair from a car) would be easier, because then the main unit would be lower down than the surfaces one would be cleaning, and again the hose wouldn't have to bend through as large an angle.

I think the power of the suction more than makes up for the slight difficulty in using the hose with attachments at present. After going over the same area two or three times, there was a semi-restored new carpet smell. I was amazed.

Cool Hand

OK, now I'm kinda pissed, because although I generally dislike smilies and try to avoid using them as much as possible, I needed to put one there so as not to draw too much fire, but the stupid things just weren't showing up. I haven't changed any of my settings, so I don't know what's up with that. Oh well, insert appropriate smilie here ___________ (hey, if you're offended because you put in a bird flipping smilie, you've only yourself to blame--you chose it, fuckface). Oh yeah. Happy B'day again. Stupid smilies.

"reluctant" is the third definition of "reticent" -- they are synonymous.

Not in my dictionary, it's not.

Recticent refers to the quality of being unwilling to speak, or being closed mouthed or quiet.

Ergo, being reluctant to speak is to be reticent. But one can be reticent without being reluctant.

However, I'm not quite sure how one is reticent to spend. Does that mean you just don't talk about it?

reticent (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=reticent)

1. Inclined to keep one's thoughts, feelings, and personal affairs to oneself. See Synonyms at silent.
2. Restrained or reserved in style.

Hi pesci--further update: It sucks like hell. I vacuumed the bedroom last night, which I had recently steamcleaned, and all kinds of stuff still came up out of the pile.
...
I think the power of the suction more than makes up for the slight difficulty in using the hose with attachments at present. After going over the same area two or three times, there was a semi-restored new carpet smell. I was amazed.
The hose stuff you describe seems to be inherent with uprights, so I think I'd overlook it too. I may need to stop at Target one of these days and get me one of those babies. Costco sells one of the models, but it's not the Animal -- that attachment seems worth the upgrade. Not to mention the way cool purple!

Now I get to benefit from livius' birthday! Thanks for the update, Blake, I think I'm sold!

p.s. I would like to state, for the record, that my interest in vacuums is not because I do a lot of cleaning. It's because I do it so rarely. Since I tend to vacuum only when someone is coming over or during strange alien spore invasions, it is doubly frustrating that my vacuums have a tendency to break down mid-house. Plus, I just added a new dog to the fur and feather gang and two dogs seem to produce more than one+one dogs worth of hair (granted, it is that time of the year).

Well, damn... I guess I'll have to throw out all thirteen volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as the Random House Unabridged Webster's Dictionary and the Webster's New World Dictionary....Not a single one shows that as an acceptable definition.

I suspect that the American Heritage lexicographers have added it because so many American speakers misuse the term....ergo, they have amended the definition to include that widely used by ignorant and misinformed speakers of English (read: Americans watching too much TV with bad writing).

Sorry.

No bling-bling for the godfry.if one dictionary includes the definition

and another doesnt cant we then assume that such use is not widespread and thus not standard english yet.

secondly, arent dictionary definitions listed in order of use, ie the first definiton is the most common usage of the word and the last one the least common usage of the word, just curious.

and just to muddy the waters, I use the word reticent like livius did as a synonym for reluctant most of the time.

There's a term for this I don't remember--when the definition of a word is broadened or expanded due to misuse or pervasive, uh, shit, another term I don't remember, but used loosely. (Can you tell I gots a big headache today? I think part of my brain fell out.)

Anyways, it's when the meaning of a word becomes less specific over time through common usage.

Which I am against, except in this case, because I didn't know that reticence referred to speech. Which it does, but I didn't know that before I looked it up just now. And if I didn't know it, it probably means it's not important. Right?

Anyway, it's appropriate for a descriptive dictionary to include a widely used definition, and it's up to the editors to decide whether they call it an 'acceptable' use or not.

Merriam-Webster dictionary reticent definition #3 is reluctant

Wordsmyth.net synonyms for reticent include hesitant and reluctant.

On second thought, I supposed I should've been reticent to post. It does show that more than one dictionary agrees about another meaning for reticent.

Godfry, what editions are those dictionaries you cited? Are they at least as recent as the one warrenly quoted from?

I think liv chose the perfect word in her description, since for me reticent carries an image of a miser carefully rationing his words. Thus "reticent to spend that kind of money," to me, is a slightly stronger statement of Scrooge-like tendencies than "reluctant to spend that kind of money."

Nope... I'd think that it would be an appropriate gift.

Godfry, what editions are those dictionaries you cited? Are they at least as recent as the one warrenly quoted from?

Editions, well...how about year of copyright? The Random House and the Webster's New World are 1997. The Oxford is 1933, printed in 1961...but I double-checked online and they still do not list "reluctant" as an associated meaning. Neither does the Cambridge Dictionary, nor the Cambridge Dictionary of the American Language.

Interestingly, msnEncarta gives this:

ret·i·cent [ réttiss’nt ]

adjective

reserved: unwilling to communicate very much, talk a lot, or reveal all the facts
rather reticent on the subject of her finances

ret·i·cent·ly adverb

Word Usage

Extended senses:

In its traditional sense, reticent means reluctant to speak. Thus it is more nearly a synonym for silent than it is for reluctant: He was never reticent about wanting the job. It is, however, increasingly seen in contexts in which it conveys other kinds of reluctance: He was reticent to travel so much. Many regard this as a misuse, and in fact such usages tend to convey nothing that reluctant would not convey better.

I think liv chose the perfect word in her description, since for me reticent carries an image of a miser carefully rationing his words. Thus "reticent to spend that kind of money," to me, is a slightly stronger statement of Scrooge-like tendencies than "reluctant to spend that kind of money."

Hey... If it works for you, then go with it. I read about this misusage in Atlantic Magazine's "Word Court". They grumbled that American misusage of "reticent" had in very recent times degraded it's meaning, as many Americans misuse it as a synonym for "reluctant".

I agree.

I also think that language changes...and thus agree with Warn about such. However, this is not coming up with new usages that illuminate, but sheer laziness and ignorance in using a word that sounds right, but isn't.

I was aware that reticent was technically inappropriate in that context and have been for a lot longer than one year, but I stand by my judgement that using it in that particular sentence made it richer. I am not a big fan of rigidly adhering to set conventions in all situations. What I saw in your use of reticent here is this: reticent can be defined as "stingy in communicating." It has a vulgar meaing of reluctant. So using it in place of "reluctant to spend money" reinforced the image of "livius not wanting to part with her dollars."
