In this thread (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=184452#post184452) fragment proposed an "article festival" where we-uns would write articles to contribute to the site.

I'd sure as heck like to contribute, but, like a kid given an essay for English class, am blocked on a topic to write about. Any ideas? perhaps many of you will gravitate to "law" topic suggestions, and that's fine provided it's manageable enough, but it need not be so limited. There's a whole lotta stuff I'm not an expert on, but I am pretty good at researching.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your input!

Well I'd love to help you out maddog, but I don't think I know enough of interests to make a useful suggestion. Any interesting hobbies you might have or subjects that you are interested in. Since you are open to doing research, the world is your oyster. You could do anything that strikes your fancy.

I am trying to do an Astronomy article. I am not as adventurous or prolific as The Lone Ranger though, so I am not doing an "Intro to Astronomy" or anything. I am keeping it simple. That way if I do good I can always add more on the same subject later, but if it sucks I can just drop it and pretend it was a stand alone effort :innocent:

How about a book or movie review, maybe of a courtroom drama just to tie in your legal expertice. I don't know if that's too much of busman's holiday, though. :)

That's because yours was for the cool idea -- and hence cool-- while mine was the vigorous seconding -- and hence vigorous. :cheerful:

Well I third the notion. (Though I can't find a faster smiley...)

Oh, good idea. Though Ken Burns made a 9-episode documentary out of it. :D

I thought it would be particularly timely seeing as spring training is right around the corner... teach me something new so that I can enjoy the upcoming season even more fully :hyper:

Man, now I've got a wicked craving for ballpark nachos...

I'll throw something out and see how well it sticks ...

You've mentioned that one of the appealing things about working in the legal field is that it gives you the opportunity to do something noble -- help people. I think that might be a good thing to explore. After all, so many people view all those in the legal profession as amoral and money-driven.

Alas, concepts like "nobility" and "honor" and "justice" are somewhat nebulous, but I think an article discussing such concepts and how they (ideally) apply to the legal system might well be fascinating. (I've mentioned before that lots of people talk about "honor," for example, without seeming to understand what the word means. That's why I find the "honor"-obsessed Klingons on the newer Star Trek shows so annoying -- their actions consistently show that they don't have the first idea what honor is. In fairness, I seem to recall catching an episode of Deep Space Nine once in which Dax told Worf exactly that -- that Klingons talk about honor a lot, but don't seem to understand what the word actually means.)

Just a thought ...

Cheers,

Michael

I like the legal honor idea a lot, maddog.

I like that idea a lot too and I have zero interest in baseball. Not that my opinion should carry any undue weight, though! If the people want baseball, let them eat baseball.

How about "nobility", "honor" and "justice" in baseball.
