Confession time: The computer bestowed two, count em, two major addictions, message boards and Internet radio.
The board addiction came first in the form of IIDB, and now Freethought
Its the radio part of said addictions that I wish to explore here. I have the computer on 24/7 streaming radio into my thick head. (Oh yeah, even while sleeping)
I listen constantly to BBC Radio4 from the start of their broadcasting day until the end, then I switch to BBC Radio7
These two stations are just so very eclectic, with the exception of music, that I seemingly cannot survive without them
Although I live on the other side of the pond than ye jolly olde England, specifically away up here in Polarbearland, I find the presentation of all material on the BBC so much less hyper than either canadian or american stations, and that is why I have become addicted to them. They are informative, artful and amusing without setting my teeth or nerves grating.
But I am always willing to dilute my addiction so please share the internet radio gems that appeal to you. Any and all categories welcome
PS: PublicRadioFan is a good source for radio sources. Just google it.

The only internet radio I ever listen to is Air America Radio. I even downloaded Real Player for that sole purpose because that bitch lisarea didn't tell me about the this (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3199&postcount=4) until it was too late.

Here's a longshot. This is my local college radio station:
http://www.radio1190.org
If you click on Netcast on the navbar to the left, you can get streaming radio. I know I'm way too old for this stuff, but I love college radio. It's mostly music, of course. They play various styles of current college-demographic music, like hip hop and emo and J-pop and stuff like that, but they also have little segments on influential music where the DJs pick some seminal musician (usually rock and pop stuff) and describe their influence and what made it significant, and they have regular shows for jazz and blues, and a "skip, pop, and scratch" show for Folk and Americana, which got its name because they actually play old 78s and stuff. Stuff like that. (Click on Schedule from the navbar to see their programming.)
It's very very hit or miss. They play some pretty dumb stuff, but every now and again, they make it worth your while by playing something absolutely amazing--new or old--that you'd probably never have heard anywhere else.
Again, I know it's a long shot, but it'd be kind of nice to know that maybe I'm not actually THE oldest person listening. In a way, it just sort of makes me feel good to hear these punkassed kids being so passionate and articulate, and to know that, despite the impression you might get from mainstream pop culture, there's still a big fat creative underground out there doing all kinds of amazing stuff.
I have a simple cure for internet radio addiction: connect to the net at 3rd-world speeds. 14.4K doesn't let through much voice fidelity let alone music.

Wow Liv, I'm sorry that you have that resource hogging spy ridden piece O crap on your machine. I have been using Real Alternative and Quicktime alternative for two years now and never had a problem. My suggestion to you and everyone else is to just uninstall these hogs and install the alternatives.
Just a suggestion, not an edict :yes!:

And a good suggestion it is. I've uninstalled RP already, but you know how it is: once you've got that fucker spooging up your vids, it never really goes away until you rebuild.

I just yesterday discovered 3WK Radio (http://www.3wk.com/), and I really like it. I listen to it via iTunes and the quality is excellent.
Radio K (http://www.radiok.org) has good music, but the stream cuts out a lot when I listen to it. It's the University of Minnesota station.
