Once everyone gets their smartass comments about the title out their systems, I'd really appreciate a hand (or twelve).
I've added over 300 smilies since we went live, you see, and now that Joe and vm have hooked us up with the supermoney search feature, it's high time I rearranged the categories so they're more intuitive. I don't want to go crazy, mind you (shut up!), but I think there's room to spread out the wealth.
Here are the current categories:
The Basics
Greetings
Good Times, Good Times...
Positive Reinforcement
Ah, L'Amour...
Shy and Retiring
Anger Management
Owies
Sorrow Floats
Bothered and Bewildered
Running Hot and Cool
A Bit of Musicality, Please
Holidays and Parties
Museum Quality
Vocations
Celebrity Impersonators
Beasts and Botany
Food and Drink
Quoth
I Saw the Sign
The Sporting Group
Cogs in the Machine
Salute This
I've already got a couple of ideas - splitting Beast and Botany into two separate cats again, a Bodily Functions cat - but the real key, I think, is in breaking up the monster ones like Good Times and Bothered.
Suggestions are ever so welcome. Anyone?

I would really like to help Liv, but I'm so very new here so I shall sit this one out and let the older hands make suggestions. I shall watch with interest though :urock:

Good ideas can come from anywhere, Mr. Toad sir; no experience required. I hope you won't be reluctant to share should something brilliant leap to mind. :alarm:

Oh! That reminds me. I forgot to post :toad: in the Animal Cops thread. Isn't he adorable?

Bodily functions? :innocent:
I think the categories lower down the list are pretty consistent and logical. It's the top ones that need thought, as you say. I hesitate to challenge the imaginative names of the categories ... but here's a vague idea of how I think of categorising them:
- how I (the poster) am feeling
- - positive emotions
- - negative emotions - could break up further into anger, embarrassment, sorrow
- how I feel about the referenced post, quote, event or whatever
- - positive - approval, laughter, ...
- - support - hugs and stuff
- - disapproval - frown, anger, sad etc
I haven't tried any such categorisation because it's too late, and anyway I would need some inspiration. But before the search feature I was often struggling to find things on this kind of basis.
Joe logical. :write: :writing:
Oh, and yes, you need help.

Suggestions for smilies?...*eyebrows raised*...What happened to the old way of typing out a more personal reply...*sighing with an air of feeling old*
*shakin me head*....Sorry liv, I just ain't gonna be much help to ya....*mock look of resignation and immense helplessness*...being that I rarely use smilies.
Is there something else I could help with?...*hopeful look and a wee grin*

Liv, just a minor suggestion. Do you think that it might be time for a small review of the smilies that are on the "basic" page? Perhaps a thumbs-up or maybe a wavy would be among those more often used, or perhaps not.
Just the eccentric thoughts of an "everybody-is-out-of-step-except-my-little-boy" Toad

Sounds like a good idea to me, Toad. In fact, I was just thinking a few days ago that it would be nice to refresh the basics. Wavy is good, but I'm not sure about the thumbs up; they kind of annoy me, truth be told. I'll look around and see what gets used a lot.

Ya Liv, I kinda know what you mean with the thumbs-up. I have used it as something on a little lower scale than a full-fledged Bow-down, because I do not wish to devalue the currency of bow-downs but indiscriminate use. I suppose a Yup works in this instance. I really must use more Yups methinks :yup: :yup:
Some may not use smilies at all or very infrequently and thats certainly OK with me, but just one of the many charms of this board if the great smilie collection. Even Smiley the iguana approves :yup:
So sayeth the above average discerning Toad

Smiley :chameleon: has authorized me to report that he is happier than an iguana in a salad bowl :giggle:
He says that he is especially pleased with  and :chin: and he has appointed Toad :toad: as his official :sadcheer: so there Liv

Outstanding. I just couldn't live with myself if Smiley had been dissatisfied with our smilies. :cheer:

Well, I'm a total smiley FREAK, so I'll probably use them by the truckload...
 :haha: :muahaha: :bump: :fly2: :happywave: :knight: :mowlawn:
You made these yourself? or just collected them?

I should hope so. Of course, now that you're here I'm wondering if we've got enough of them.
You made these yourself? or just collected them?
Erm... No, I did not make 1300 smilies. I haven't made any of them, in fact, although I have modified many of them. "Just collected them..." :hmph: I'd like to see you put together such a money collection. Tweren't easy, ya know. :glare:

Dammit Liv, I was looking and looking for that little hmmph smiley earlier this evening to no avail. Do you think that it is possible that the smilies have their own little secret party room? :chin:

Dear :toad:, you can't find :hmph: as 'hmmph', only 'hmph'. Maybe we could persuade liv to add that as a keyword.
Nevertheless, it's pretty obvious what some of the smilies get up to when we're not watching.

Keyword "hmmph" added. :curtsey:
Good work, but why are you pulling your cheeks out like that?

I'm bumping this because I'm in a catching up with admin work that needs doing mode and I really want to work this out today. I like your ideas a lot, Joe. I just need to think of clever names for them.
Heeeeeelp!

Have you been in a managerial position? :glare: "I'm thinking about this now so drop everything else." I shall have to start calling you pointy-haired admin (www.dilbert.com).
OKOK, I'm thinking about it.

Now that's just cruel. The only way you can make it up to me is by inventing the perfect categories. :tmevil:

I got started on breaking things up a little. As threatened, I created a Bodily Functions category which includes all excretions and ablutions. I moved the various doin' it and whuppin' it smilies to Sex and Violence. I created a special category for Comics and Cartoons since so many of the Celebrity Impersonators seemed to come from that milieu. Lastly (for now), I split Beasts and Botany back up into a Bestiary and a Botanical Gardens.
And now, it's :snore: time.
