To protect the guilty I won't mention the brand. I am presently microwaving some "chimichangas" that were sold as frozen food. I have burritos from the same manufacturer. Both the burritos and changas are labelled as "beef and bean".

Here is the deal. I can't tell the difference between the two.

In a restaurant a chimichanga is either deep fried or at least fried in oil, a burrito isn't cooked except for the meat and refried beans.

In a frozen, to be microwaved package, however, there is no difference.

That sucks. I wanted to nuke up some deep fried, artery clogging goodness and I end up with a damn burrito.

I should sue.

Try reading the ingredients on your frozen foods, and you might have a hard time deciding whether or not the stuff you are eating is properly described as food. When I stopped eating that and instead ate whole and natural food, I couldn't go back to eating microwave dinners or frozen burritos. Even the smell of that stuff makes me ill. I have a microwave at home, and I never use it.

I think it would be a public service to mention the brand. I'm a fan of Amy's (http://www.amys.com/), myself.

Ya know the Toad has just awakened from a rather restless sleep and is in a silly (read whimsical) mood. And so Liv I just checked out your link ... and watcha know there is Amy herself presenting some hot wholesome goodie. When I am in said silly mode I picture poor Amy and other such wholesome characters slaving away all through the night along with her young fatherless children just so that unappreciative characters such as myself might enjoy the fruits of their labours. So dear friends spare a little empathy for poor Amy and her brood

Please stop beating me over the head with a frozen goodie :rollpin:

But hey there dantonac please post the brand involved.

Hmmm... Looks like their cruncheros (http://www.elmonterey.com/mexicanfood/cruncheros.html) are the way to go next time you're in the mood for deep fried, artery clogging goodness.

Thanks dantonac. That is very helpful cuz even up here in Polarbearland that crummy brand is omnipresent.

I really must see if I can find the Amy's brand products. The very pracitible information along with the heavy doses of thought inducing input on this board are the reasons I love it here.

Oh did I mention the laugh inducing offerings

Now that is silly, particularly since Amy is the daughter and they just named the company after her, much like Mercedes Benz. (I once asked my dad if he would name a car after me and he scoffed. Meanie.)

I probably haven't even tried a quarter of their offerings, but everything I have tried has been outstanding. If you can find her up there in the tundra, Socratoad, it'll definitely be worth your while. :)

Interestingly I didn't even see their chimichangas listed on their web site. I wonder if they have discontinued them. They certainly should since they are identical to their burritos.

Oh, yay! They carry Amy's at my local Safeway(s)! So says their handy dandy zip code store locator.

I kind of agree with you in regards to the quality of ingredients. I also am a gardener so produce as much of my food as is practical. Frozen food, however, is hard to beat when I get late night munchies and just don't feel like preparing food. Take it from the freezer and toss it in the micro is hard to beat for convenience.

If the flavor isn't all that good with mexican frozen food it can usually be fixed with salsa and sour cream anyway :D

I used to eat El Monterey chimichangas frequently. I used to like it, although I couldn't tell whether or not it really had beef in it.

When I need a late night snack, I usually go for fruit--apples with peanut butter, bananas with peanut butter, melon or pineapple that I already sliced up, and that sort of thing. If I want protein, a couple of eggs on a small hot frying pan gets the job done quick, too.

Here is a list of ingredients of an Am'y Bean Burrito:
INGREDIENTS : Organic pinto beans, organic whole wheat and wheat flour, filtered water, organic brown rice, organic tomatoes, cheddar and jack cheeses*, expeller pressed high oleic safflower oil, organic onions, organic bell peppers, sweet rice flour, sea salt, spices, organic garlic. (*all cheeses are made without animal enzymes or rennet). contains wheat and milk To contrast, here is what is in an El Monterey's beef and bean burrito:
WATER, WHEAT FLOUR (ENRICHED WITH NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), BEEF PATTIE MIX (BEEF, WATER, TEXTURED VEGETABLE PROTEIN PRODUCT (SOY FLOUR, CARAMEL COLOR)), PINTO BEANS, SOYBEAN OIL, TORTILLA FLOUR BLEND (SALT, BAKING POWDER (BICARBONATE OF SODA, STARCH, SODIUM ALUMINUM SULFATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE), WHEY, SODIUM METABISULFITE (AS DOUGH CONDITIONER)), CHILI PEPPER, SALT, SAVORY FLAVOR (AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, SALT, MALTODEXTRIN, SOY SAUCE (WHEAT, SOYBEANS, SALT), LACTIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR), SOY LECITHIN, SPICES, GARLIC POWDER It contains more SODIUM METABISULFITE than it does chili pepper or salt. The biggest advantage of an El Monterey burrito is its price and it has beef in it, unlike Amy's foods which is strictly vegetarian and it is probably expensive. Vegetarian products are closely associated with health foods, which is stupid.

That's been true, but I think there's a noticeable shift in the marketplace thanks to high end health food chains like Whole Foods which has a fantastic deli/butcher section. My local coop has a small selection of organic lunch meat/hot dog kinda stuff, and there are some meat products in the frozen food section as well.

Still, those darn frozen foods have a ton of salt in them. Too bad, very annoying.

Doesn't that make you wonder why? I mean, that damn thing is frozen, you really don't need salt to preserve it. And warm food needs less seasoning than cold food. You're really not going to chomp on it frozen.

I would just like to defend frozen food everywhere. personally, I couldnt care less about the chemicals they put in the food, if it tastes could, then all sins are forgiven.

walmart has a line of frozen entrees which are uberbadass.

Yeah... but salt (or monosodium glutamate) is a flavor enhancer. Anything with limited flavor has the flavor improved by adding doses of sodium.

Yup. I bet other spices don't hold up as well in the freezer so salt is pretty much a must have for flavor enhancement.
