View Full Version : What gadgets do you have in your office/cubicle?

Brian63

The state of Pennsylvania is trying to cut its energy bills, and doing so by disallowing state employees to have certain items in their offices or cubicles. The items listed include toasters, hairdryers, refrigerators, etc.

I have never even seen any of these types of home appliances in any cubicle of any person, in any job I have had. At my desk can be found a small sample of CD’s and some snack foods (and several bottles of water). That is all very normal though, and I have nothing usual about my workspace. It seems unusual that people would bring those home devices to their work, but apparently it happens.

What notable gadgets do you keep in your office/cube, or what ones have you seen in the workspaces of others?

Brian

If they get too harsh on it, there are a number of USB port powered accessories you can get, including coffee mug warmers, fans, cellphone chargers, seat heating pads, lava lamps, vacuum cleaners, humidifiers, lighted xmas trees, massagers, and more, I'm sure.

I have a coffee mug warmer. I am notorious for making a coffee and 3 hours later it sits there untouched, stone cold. The warmer just keeps it at drinking temperture for us distracted girls.

Brian63, do your employers provide a real breakroom with a refrigerator and microwave oven?

Mine doesn't. So we usually pool our resources and office space and set up refrigerator, microwave, bottled water hot/cold dispenser, coffee machine wherever we can. We have to get facilities' approval for each device, though. I don't know anyone who has personal fridge or microwave, but some folks do have their personal coffeemakers.

As for myself, I have a couple of special lights to reduce glare on the monitors of the two networks in my shared cubicle. I have two personal fans for when my officemates think 80 degF is comfortable.

Where I am now in the neighboring offices, I can find a toaster, toaster oven, several George Foreman grills. I think the next office over has a full on cappucino machine with milk steamer and flavored gooey stuff bottles, too!

We're not allowed to have refrigerators, toasters, etc. at our desks. I think energy consumption was their reasoning. We have a couple kitchens in the building, with refrigerators, microwaves, plates, plastic ware, and all that jazz.

But still, the fridge closest to me is disgusting. If I bring in something that requires refrigeration, I park it in the fridge farthest from my desk (but also the cleanest).

I don't really have gadgets in my office. I have a 30-caliber round from an A-10, a thermos from JavaOne, some race cars, Buddy Christ, the cartridge from the Metroid NES game, a Cessna 172 diecast model, and a poster of a C172 cockpit. Some other stuff, too, but those are the things people comment on the most.

I don't have much, just a few stuffed animals, a fake tree with orange and purple halloween lights in it, and a fish, who is our official Office Mascot. Some of my coworkers have space heaters and radios. We're lucky to have a fridge and microwave in the break room.

Edit: Oh, and some houseplants. Can't believe I forgot those.

Go go, gadget houseplants. :giggles:

Me, I have a space heater under my desk because of the aggressive A/C; a mug warmer because I drink my coffee slow; and my trusty XM Radio boom box.

I share an office. I was in a cubicle of my own, which I actually prefer to having to share an office.

We're movin' on up though... in a couple weeks, they're moving the two of us into a window office. :slide: :thrust:

WMD?It only takes 3 doors for me to get to WMD in the same building as my office.

The only gadget I have at work is a computer workstation light that is mounted at the top of the monitor and shines indirect line down across the front of the computer screen to cut down on glare and reflections on the surface.

I've got several personal items, including some bendy skeletons (one is using the workstation light as a bone bleaching tanning bed, another is riding a bendy brontasaurus skeleton), a stuffed Ferengi Federation Ensign, a fishhead note holder, a framed photo of my ex-horse in my backyard, several photos of my ex-dog, photos of my bird, cat, sister, ex-mom, niece, etc.. Hmm, a funky fish pen/pencil holder and paperclip holder, too.

Another 'gotta-have' USB accessory: USB Beverage Chiller. (http://www.coolitsystems.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84) It cools your beverage to 45°F.

I added my newest desk toy this morning: a pirate skull magic 8-ball thingy from a McDonald's Happy Meal, from their Pirates of the Caribbean promotion.

We're going to use it to make all our important decisions from now on.

I don't have a cubicle. I do have a locker, though, (which, come to think of it, could be considered a cubicle), which has an 8x10 print of Chekirov's 'Embrace in Paris', an autographed glossy of Lauren Bacall, a few journals, various reciepts, gum wrappers, etc, etc.

We have all kinds of fun equipment in our lab. My favorite is the sonicator because it makes loud, high pitch squeals that annoy my coworkers.

O.k. so that's not a personal item but we can't take anything into the lab to prevent contamination.

I used to have a bit of lab gear at home, (before my marriage separation).

I wish I had it now because I personally don't think that sticking a couple of ice cubes in a drink cools it down sufficiently, (or quickly enough). I figure if I get a magnetic stirrer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_stirrer) and drop a couple of stirrer bars in my OJ it will reduce the temperature to a nice even near 0º Celcius.

Look out in the future for the new IRON MAN thread, "I just accidently swallowed a stirring bar, (choke) ... (cough) ...".

Now that is something I wouldn't mind as a USB device.

I think it's fun trying to work out cool ways to waste your computer's power resources, and it also helps to destroy the envioronment quicker. I figure the sooner that happens the sooner the goddamned greenies will have nothing left to whinge about. :D

USB Kitty (http://usb.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00179) protects your computer, making cat noises when anyone gets close to it.

USB rechargable battery (http://www.boingboing.net/2006/09/20/aa_batteries_with_bu.html) fits any device that uses AA batteries, top flips open to reveal USB plug.

USB TV tuner (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1822570&CatId=1427) is the size of a USB flash memory device, but contains an analog television tuner. There are also HDTV capable tuners, they require a much higher processor speed to work well.

I actually have this gadget, my scissors kept disappearing at the office so I ordered a new one for my desk and it came with this little box cutter attachment (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_detail.asp?CT=1&webid=567564), you just click the trigger and the little blade pops out of the scissor handle. I love it for opening boxes that arrive :wriggle:

i dont work in an office, but my work area has couple of propane gas grills in it...also the "shop" lunch room has 9 microwaves, 2 fridges, a freezer, a pop machine, a vending machine and 3 2-pot coffee makers.

the "office" lunch room only has one microwave and a small fridge, but they have an exrpesso machine, a pool table and few other fancy toys up their, not to mention a netted driving range on the roof of the warehouse. But us lower class shop people are not allowed in those places..... well exept for some of the lucky labourers who get to shovel the snow off the roof for em.

Actually quite few shop people can go in the office luch room, but most just dont want to deal wiht the office people. Even the lowest of the paper pushers seem to have a holier than thou attitude where I work...but thats a difernt isue for a differnt thread and I'll stop here.
