You know I just discovered in spades that on message boards all does not appear as it seems. While in the process of trying out a new copy and past program I tried to copy one of my own postings from this board. And guess what I stumbled upon? The posting I was trying to copy pasted with the notification that my post was to be ignored. If I had known about this hidden form of censorship I would never have ever contemplated posting on this board or any other.
This little incident has poisoned my opinion of this board beyond repair and so I bid you all a fond but final farewell

Look at the top right corner of every post: there's a little link there titled, "Ignore This Post", that you can use to filter out individual articles. Select the complete text for any article, paste it into a text editor, and this is what you see:

Either Socratoad is pulling everyone's leg, or he's a rather clueless nitwit, and good riddance.

We don't have any hidden ignore features built in to the software. On the contrary we have invested a considerable amount of time, effort and money to customize the software such that it provide every member with the maximum amount of self-determination of content possible. I will gladly help you figure out any technical issues you have with the software, Toad, but I really don't appreciate the insinuation that we have installed or activated any hidden features at all, much less censorship features that would run directly contrary to our stated purpose here.
Oops, cross-posted with pz. Yeah I think that's very likely the problem here. I think clueless nitwit is harsh, but it does seem like a failure on Toad's part to understand the cut and paste effect. He has mentioned before that he's a newb with forum software, so it's not a complete surprise that this would happen.

Dang. I wish I was really stupid, so everyone would forgive me my accusations, instead of thinking me "harsh." Either that, or that I was living in a culture that didn't think "I'm dumb" was a legitimate excuse.

Either Socratoad is pulling everyone's leg, or he's a rather clueless nitwit, and good riddance.
That's way too harsh, pz. Jeez, misinterpretations and misunderstandings are a part of the human condition, methinks, and Socratoad must've been feeling vulnerable or something when he saw the 'ignore this post' thing. Hell, I've never noticed an 'ignore this post' feature, but then it's something I've never felt the need to use.
Anyway, whatever triggered Socratoad's reaction, I hope he returns to see that he is not ignored, and is a welcome contributor and character here.
I hope he's ok.

Hey pz long time no see.
Your "clueless nitwit and good riddance" thing strikes me as.... I don't know... wait... I've got it...
ASSHOLISH?
Jesus fucking christ, way to be arrogant. Not everybody is so "savvy" to internet protocols as you seem to believe they should be to avoid being called a "nitwit".
I repeat: ASSHOLISH. :madrant:
livius drusus
10-23-2004, 04:28 AM
pz doesn't mince words, but neither did Toad. His OP was pretty assholish, after all. The thing is, I don't care. Not at all. Not in the least. I love the blunt bastards and I have exactly zero interest in seeing either of them trashed. It was a mistake. Tears are drying. End of song.
pzmyers
10-23-2004, 04:29 AM
You don't have to be savvy. Just look. Every post has an "ignore this post" link in the top right corner. Before getting hurt and accusing others of censorship, it seems the least you'd do is look and see if you were getting singled out.
Like I said, if only I were stupid and unobservant, maybe I wouldn't get called "ASSHOLISH" either.

10-23-2004, 04:37 AM
I didn't mean you were harsh, pz. I just meant that I thought the "clueless nitwit" was harsh. Clueless, sure. But I really don't think Socratoad's a nitwit. He made a mistake and reacted impulsively. Probably it's my tendency to do the same that enables me to be more forgiving of him.
In any case I do hope that in the future people will just ask about such a thing instead of making accusatory posts. I don't think we've said or done anything here to give the impression that we're out to screw anyone over.

Here the damned fool is. I'm so very sorry that I questioned the honesty of a very honest woman , and so I don't see how I can possibly contribute to this wonderful board after just what happened.
Let me explain before I withdraw to lick my self-inflicted wound:
As Lauri and perhaps most of you know I am very vulnerable right now and may very well remain so. Recently I had two heart attacks and both this board and IIDB have more or less, mostly more become my lifeline to the world. I really am having a hard time functioning and am very frightened that I am losing my faculties. And so tonight in order to lesson the physical pain I smoked a pipefull of grass. I was feeling on top of the world, and so between postings I tried out a new cut/copy/paste program. I picked a post of mine from the Margaret Hassan thread. When I pasted it, there was the complete message and at the top it said ignore this post dated o.1.42 today. The trouble was it did not look at all like the bar at the top of the board interface.
I felt like I had been kicked in the gut, and then with a broken heart I turned around and kicked poor Liv in the gut, not out of any anger, but rather because I could see no other choice.
Dearest Liv and all my other friends on this board and on IIDB I have shattered all my slowly regain self-confidence and feel totally incapable of posting anymore. Whether I ever regain this state of being I simply do not know. All I do know is that I am totally devastated to the point of numbness.
I'm so very sorry Liv your the pain and stress I have caused you. Words just simply do not cover the way I feel. And to everyone else here just carry on and let the memory of this crazy old fool fade as quickly as possible.
If this message seems fairly articulate, please believe me I am feeling anything but.
I may continue to lurk for a wee while if the pain from doing so will allow me.
Toad
PS: sick or not, none of this would have happened if I had not been stoned

Yeah, I'm still trying to recover from that major embarrassment. I guess it was the way the "ignore" thing copied as text that totally blew my feeble little mind. I am not so versatile as many of you with puter stuff, and so was unaware that it is possible for cut/copy/paste to pick up words outside the text box. Of course being stoned out of my tree certainly was not an asset  :(

I can definitely say that it feels akward to be the low-man on the totem pole. I've never felt such jealousy before, and it plucks my insecure strings something fierce.
Keep your head up. We all misinterpret.
Whilst experiencing complete, total, mind-numbing ego death, I accused my wonderful significant other Jamie of not only cheating on me, with my roommate, and a female from Florida she has never met, I also accused her of loving a little puppy more than she did me.
I mean, how can I save face? The only excuse was that I was legally insane at the time! I didn't know my name, couldn't describe a sunrise, and the idea of a "concept" was completely foreign to me.

Crap. My intention wasn't to get attention by that, but merely to say that we do silly things sometimes.... after chemically altering ourselves.
I had full-fledged ego death (I do not know who I am, where I am, what I am doing, nor does *anything* whatsoever make ANY SENSE. I couldn't say my name, and it literally took me 10-15 minutes to try and describe a sunrise...), precognition (I knew what was going to happen seconds before it happened, and this went on for a good 2 hours), and the obvious hallucinations...
Anyway! NO need to hijack. This isn't about me.
I wanted to describe similarity, tell you it is ok, and that you are so very welcome here that to think otherwise is to fool yourself.
Stay. Many of us wish this.

He sure can shake that ass, can't he? Does this mean you don't like the octopus? I think he's just stellarly animated, and besides, he'll make Joe really happy.

actually, the octopus is indeed "stellarly animated" but the bunny is just so fucking cute, that frankly the bunny wins the "Get beyelzu to comment on me" award, hands down.

I dont understand. That is an octopus isnt it? It has the right number of legs and a big fucking head and I damn sure dont see a beak between its legs, why would anyone think its a squid?
btw, if the squid thing was just a joke, I apologize in advance for being obtuse.

Sheeit, don't ask me, but Doctor Toadlittle has forgotten more about animals than I'll ever know, so if he calls squid I gotta take that to heart.

OK everybody Toad just came hopping back dressed in his little velvet Jammies and bearing a huge pot of hot chocolate.
Did I tell ya all that this is a true story? Once upon a time, not soooooo very long ago a man had a small pet octopus that he kept in a huge aquarium in his basement. This man also kept several tankfuls of rather exotic tropical and salt waters fishes.
After a while this man noticed that his fish were disappearing. Suspecting the octopus to be the culprit. He watched carefully but he never saw the octopus leave its tank, and yet the fish continued to disappear.
These fish were rather expensive and not easily replaced so the guy put a plywood top on the octopus's tank, and for good measure put a cement block on top of that. Still the fish disappeared. Then he noticed a wet trail across the floor. pretending to leave he later quietly snuck down to the basement and waited.
The hours passed, then he heard the top moving on the octopus tank. Out came the octopus, slid down the side of the tank, crept across the floor, up and into one of the fish tanks and enjoyed the living buffet within. Still the guy did nothing but observe. After satiating itself the octopus climbed back out, reversed the procedure and then slowly replaced the tank cover so that there was no obvious clues as to its escapade.
Thats it folks.
The whole family of octopuses/octopi, squid and various others of that family are extremely intelligent, and certainly would be a worthy subject of further study.
Now wash yer sticky hands and off to bed.

That's such a great story, Toad. I totally believe it too, and not just because I've been sneaking shots of Lauri's Kahlua behind her back while Ex-zombie ran interference either.
I used to be freaked out by octopi due to childhood trauma in Greece involving a huge tentacle replete with suction cups proffered as snack food, but just a few months ago, I was home sick from work and I happened upon a documentary on octopuses. When I saw what incredible escape artists they are, how the lab techs are constantly having to chase them down in the morning cause they've spent the night getting out their tanks and partying, how adorably molluskular they are, well, I just fell in love.
Will you get me an octupus, Uncle Toad? Pleeeeeeaaase? I promise I'll take good care of him. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaase? :naughty:

badass, that is so cool.
he actually walked accross floor to get to the other tanks? regardless it actually spent time out of water?
Iwonder how long an octopus can hold its breath.

Heyyyy.... WTF happened to all my Kahlua? :P
That is a priceless story, Toad. Kinda freaky but priceless nonetheless. What did you to do prevent future living buffet feedings by the guilty octopus in question?
(Oh and if I have octopi nightmares tonight I'm gonna blame it on you! ;) )

No no Lauri, I was not the guy in the story, but I did contact him after I read about his experiences.
The story was in some scientific magazine several years ago.
Octopi can live for a considerably long time out of water ...... several hours.

There was a documentary once that showed footage of a captured octopus escaping from a ship. The thing slipped out of the aquarium it had been placed in and scuttled across the deck to the railing and over the side. Smart little bugger. :yup:

In any case, I don't think I will be ordering calamari anytime soon. I'd be too prone to a psychomatic certainty that there was *something* creeping around in my belly!
