The Man owns companies that make stuff. The Man tells them to charge a certain price for it(sometimes far higher than what it's worth). Here's a few examples: fire paste (http://www.rei.com/product/37168.htm)
Sterno (http://survivalsolutions.com/cgi-bin/merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SS&Product_Code=Cooking+10&Category_Code=Camp)
That tube is about the size of a tube of tooth paste. I know this because I've seen it in an outdoors store. Fuck that!
You can make your own in bulk for really cheap. Here's how:
Ingredients:
2/3 flour (the white stuff you make bread with, not the reproductive organ of angiosperms)
1/3 flammable liquid (alcohol, used oil out of your car, gasoline etc.)
Obviously using gas is going to make it very flammable, so be careful when you light it.
Directions:
Put the flour and flammable liquid in a container that won't react with the hydrocarbons(plastic containers are a bad idea, unless you know they're fuel proof) Stir until the mixture has a dough-like texture.
Then you just put the stuff in resealable container(again, something non-reactive) for when you go camping.
I haven't tried it yet, but mixing corn syrup into it might make it sticky so it will cling to your camp wood well. I've also not made it with motor oil yet, so that might be what you'd want to make it with if you're going for sticky.
Obviously the more liquid you add the thinner and more runny it will make the mix, so you can tweak it to just the properties you want.
Sterno is a fine invention. However it costs too much. The best thing to do is buy some cans of it once and from then on recycle them by filling it with your own mix. All you do is liquify some paraffin wax(can be bought in bulk at a local craft store) and add some denatured alcohol to it and stir it in. Pour it into the empty Sterno can and let it harden to solid(or gel up if you added that much alcohol) Depending on how flammable you want your pseudo-sterno the more alcohol you add. If you're not wanting to cook food over it you could get crazy and make hellfire wax, which is made the same way except instead of denatured alcohol you use gasoline or charcoal-lighter fluid. Cubes, strips etc.. of hellfire wax is good for starting campfires, brush piles etc..
How do you stick it to The Man?
