My avatar is Nikki the catgirl drawn by Peter Keres(he and his site seem to have disappeared). Sig. is one of my favorite quotes because it is a sneaky way of saying god isn't real and that I'm for genetic engineering. Avatar is also tied into my pro GE stance. Second sig. is just funny.

The avatar was made using photoshop the night I registered. It is intended to be a graphic representation of my user name. Ymir's blood is water in Norse Mythology so the picture is of an iceberg* in some northern sea.

*A floating mass of ice, not the cheap kind of lettuce. It isn't even green, for Ymir's sake!

My avatar is a wedge of the Roman Colosseum under a lunar eclipse. I love the orangey color of the Colosseum lights, the dark blue sky, and the way the moon looks like it's mid-movement.

I have no sig because I ain't as clever as Ymir's blood.

Upon first seeing it, I thought it was a gout of flame coming from the structure. Further inspection revealed it be a piece of slightly moldy cheese.
I have no sig because I ain't as clever as Ymir's blood.
Who is more clever, the one who writes the signature or the one who reads it?

My avatar is the Gautama Buddha taking a dump. I made it in Photoshop (the Buddha is taken from a photo somewhere and the toilet is my own embroidery). It symbolises my immature tendency to find all things scatalogical humorous.

My avatar is a photograph taken by Scotty. I chose it for several reasons

1. It's simply a great photo. I have a larger version of it actually hanging in my office. The coyote is looking right at the camera, is gorgeous (not mangy) and the surroundings are beautiful.

2. The most profound/weird encounters I have ever had with wild animals have been with coyotes. And I have had a few including one coming right up to my car window in Death Valley, and letting me out of the car and almost touch her.

3. When I was into New Age, a Native American I met told me I had a coyote spirit. Intrigued by this due to the encounters mentioned above, I studied coyotes and found out they are a highly successful species due to their adaptability to changing environments. While their cousins, Wolves, got to the brink of instinction, coyote populations have always remained stable and/or increased, even in the face of widespread eradication efforts. This kind of adaptability is a trait I think I possess and now embrace

4. My Siberian Husky strikes that exact same pose (nose down eyes forward) all the time, and Huskies have that same sharp snout, prick ears, and sorta triangular head. I have never had another dog do that, and if the coyote were black/white/grey it would look exactly like Aurora.

Mine is lighthouse point in New Haven, CT. One, because that was one of my absolute favorite places to go in college; the serenity of it there was a nice change from the grit in downtown New Haven, and no matter how stressed I may be, just sitting and watching the waves roll in and listening to them crash against the rocks soothes me. Two, because I identify with it in some ways. In both family life and friendships, I'm often the one who has to be strong and a guiding force; so occasionally the lighthouse metaphor has been applied to me. And it's just a very cool picture as well; original is here, (http://www.brycevickmark.com/views/pages/lighthousepoint.html) and the guy is just a kick-ass photographer.

No avatar. Used to use a generic cat at CF, but when other people used the same one it was confusing. Now I have a fractal design over there.

Sig is a quote from a Metallica song, which I think probably wasn't meant as a prayer, but makes a good one.

The sig line is the one I dreamed up when I registered and it still pretty much reflects my attitude. At HH I used to change my sig and location quite frequently but no one ever commented. :hmph:

My avatar is just some silly potato head I lifted from somewhere on the internet. The coordinating sig line came from the title of one of Lewis Grizzard's books. My title was inspired by Weird Al Yankovich's One Ton Tomato a song parody of Guantan-amera, topped off with Dan Quayle's potato spelling. Weird, huh? Matches its owner.

Warren, I think I saw that image on a site with the infamous Badgers, and other flash animations.

My current one is an image from Master Shake of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (or so I'm told), and the title is to reflect that I did not get my handle from this show. I've had this nick much, much longer than that show's been around. They should be paying me royalties!

The sig is just a cool opening line from a cool album and song. (It's clickable!)

I change my avatars around depending on what strikes me at any given time.

This one is a picture of my cat's in-your-face attitude about a new dog in our household. It is a close-up of this pet silent drama (http://www.pescifish.net/Sadie/mojaveStareDown.jpg). In a stunning example of casual intimidation, she managed to force the much larger dog to turn away from her breakfast, even though the dog was safe and secure inside her beloved crate-space.

My cat's expression reflects how I feel much of the time these days, though I generally make a feeble (largely unsuccessful) attempt to keep it from showing.

My user title is from one long night of visually scanning hex dumps of flight data binary files, searching for embedded time words. The recorder manufacturer uses dead beef, a perfectly valid hexadecimal number, as its frame identifier pattern. I was literally staring at the computer screen full of numbers 0-9a-f searching** and thinking, "Where's the beef?"

** not an easy task for me these days, this fact being a huge contributor to my current attitude

My username was chosen when I went on ChristianForums. Abe is my real name (short for Abel), and an apostate is someone who withdrew from the Christian religion.

My avatar comes from the comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (a very violent comic book series with dark humor). I used it for Christian Forums after the mods made me change away from the Playboy Bunny avatar. So instead of an icon representing sex, I switched to one representing extreme violence. The mods don't know, because they don't read that kind of garbage.

I love the name Abel. :) Thanks, I like it too. My name is part of what made me who I am. I used to hate it because it was often misspelled "Able" and the resemblence made me the target of a lot ridicule in grade school ("Are you ABLE to do bleh bleh bleh?"). And people kept asking if my brother's name is Cain. But now I like it because it is unique and expresses my individuality. I also like the Biblical reference. I certainly wouldn't be the same kind of man if I were named Mike or Jason.

Yikes pesci! Here's a tip for you: get that binary data file over to a UNIX box, and use the strings(1) command. strings(1) searchs a bianry file for strings (hence the name). Something along the lines of:

% strings file.dat | grep beef

will return each instance of the string "beef" in the file. Depending on exactly what you need to do this will have to be fleshed out some, but I'm sure writing a script to extract what you need would not be a difficult task.

10-26-2004, 10:39 PM
Ha! No unix boxes for us at the rusted butterknife of cutting edge wmd technology!! Our powerhouses are quite impressive VMS servers. This was on a PC, though.

Not really a spoiler, but it is a definite Data Geek derail...
But I did use a unix emulator (cygwin) on winXP to make the hex dump (od) in the first place. And I popped the text into WordPad and used the "Find" there: the data I was looking for was the 8 words following the "beef". The main purpose of the exercise was to find the offending recorder time, identify the digital equivalent to the recorder edge track data at those records so that I could separate it from the classified flight data. I only needed about a dozen or so of the sanitized records to downgrade and send to the manufacturer.

Otherwise, we have a full up application that searches for those frame ids and frame sync patterns to decode the recorded data streams.

Turns out our instrumentation crew had a dipswitch set incorrectly, which produced a bogus time anomaly.

WTF does this 'pastede on yay' thing MEEEEEAAAANNNN?

Ahh, it's a bit of an LJ/JF thing. If something "is pastede on yay" it means it's a fake sense of something, or it's "pasted on". For example, if someone is pretending to be civil or not-racist in a discussion, you could say "Their non-racism iz pastede on yay". Or if someone is a wannabe, "Their l33t is pastede on yay".

It's one of those things that just kind of spreads over the web, like "All your base" n shit. I just thought it would a wittay sig, for obvious reasons (sigs, pastede onness, y'know?... nevermind).

During the late 80's/early 90's Lewis Grizzard's column in the Atlanta newspapers was enough to justify a subscription. Overall it's a lousy paper; after he died I let the subscription lapse.

My avatar (as of yesterday) is fall colors - it's actually a tree on my street that I took a photo of on Monday when the sky was gorgeously blue. Why? Because I like fall colors.

My signature is a statement I liked that I came across in a book a little while ago. Ironically I didn't much like the book, but I did like that statement. To me it represents hope and freedom, two things very important to me.

I made my avatar out of a screenshot of one of my programs(SDL_scope (http://burningsmell.dyndns.org/sdlscope/index.html)), heavily photoshopped and with the Adlib logo overlayed on it.

I made it 'cause I misspelled 'Insert Pithy Coment Here' as 'Insert Pity Comment Here' on my custom user title and didn't even know it for a week. Oh it's not like a super-exciting in joke or anything. Its just that it is from a webcomic that I know a few people here read.

The Perry Bible Fellowship (http://70.86.201.113/imageserv2/stilltemporary/archive.html)

It used to be incredibly funny, but mostly it's just good for cropping interesting avatars from:

I LOVE beavers!
Don't we all?

I have never found a good map. It is a proposed independent nation comprising the pacific northwest, including British Columbia and southeast Alaska.

Here is a map of Cascadia (http://www.cascwild.org/cascadia.html) as defined by its watershed. I think the proposed political entities boundaries would be more inclusive of eastern Oregon.

Thanks for asking questions! :yup: Now I am learning new things about it. :pleased:

Uh, Crumb, there's almost nobody living out there in the part of Oregon that isn't in Cascadia. Believe me, I know, I've been through Oregon that way. I do not dare trying to go that way on my motorcycle without carrying some extra gasoline as there are places where it is more than 200 miles between gas stations. In Saudi Arabian terms, it's The Empty Quarter.

hmmm... very interesting. Are there any political reasons for this proposed republic? I find it difficult to grasp the concept of so many economic powerhouses abdicating their sovereignties to their respective nations.

My driver is from Crescent City, up by the Oregon Coast. He said that a few years ago there was a movement to make a new state out of Northern California and Southern Oregon. The problem was that they couldn't come up with a viable economy.

JoeP, your multiple moods avatar makes me wonder if you could make a similar one with the moods of an Irish Setter.

The avatar is my family coat of arms. I have it painted on my helmet. If my ancestors went into battle with it, so can I.

The tagline is just something typically guy-like. Why look for complicated answers? My more normal fora taglines mightn't make sense here, they're generally military related.

Regarding Cascadia, maybe this is what you were thinking of, Dingfod.
Unrelated to any of the other secessionist movements and regarded with near-universal hostility among residents of the Northwest was the Northwest Territorial Imperative, a secessionist proposal promoted by the Aryan Nations during the 1980s.

Labyrinth?

Yeah, she's playing a game with me. I uploaded Jareth and she countered with Sarah.

I guess since it's been a year and a half and many avatars later it wouldn't hurt to say what mine is: Gene Starwind, from Outlaw Star. Last one before was Batou, from Ghost in the Shell.
First sig. is a link to Orion's Arm sci-fi worldbuilding project. Second sig. is something Legs said to me. Third sig. is the one I've kept(usually on top) since '04 here, not going anywhere(favorite sig. ever). Various pics appear in the sig., sometimes related to my current avatar, but right now not.
Everything else switches out so much it's not worth saying what it is.

My avatar is His Holiness The Dalai Lama. He's a man I admire a great deal. I've read several of his books, and would give darn near anything to be able to sit and speak with him for one hour. I owe a great deal of where I am today, spiritually, from reading his words. Not so much Buddhism, but the man himself is what appeals to me. He is compassionate and open minded. His aura is one of tranquil self assurance, balanced with true humility.

My signature is from Kabir, a poet from the 14th century, I believe. I don't know much about him, but this simple sentence captures perfectly what I believe is the true starting point for anyone who searches for inner peace.

My current avatar is a slightly modified image I plucked off an image of a t-shirt for sale online.

Hello! How may I annoy you today?
:clown:

The t-shirt store page came up from a search on the artist Crab Scrambly (http://www.13thcircle.com/) whose name came up as illustrating for Voltaire (http://www.voltaire.net/). I'm pretty sure I started the whole search from browsing the Internet for Gris Grimly (http://www.madcreator.com/) info.

I do not know what book or comic of Crab Scrambly includes this clown.

Anyway, I think I saw the t-shirt at Hot Topic's webstore, but this webstore (http://kbtdirect.zoovy.com/product/CRABSRMANNOYCLOWNGRY) has a better, higher resolution image if you click on the t-shirt. I moved the text around a bit so that I could get a square image and get the biggest clown when I reduced to 100x100.

Oh yeah, this thread is asking about sigs, too.

My current one (and recent ones) reflect the fact that I can't decide on one right now. I feel like I should have something there, but nothing seems fitting right now and I'm uninspired. Maybe I'll just switch to, "This space for rent. I accept PayPal."

I have a signature, but I usually deselect the option to display it (done on each post). Between it and my user title, you get a glimpse into the seething miasma of my inner soul.

I'll display it on this post, but otherwise it's available via my user profile.

My current avatar is Felix the Cat. I used to love watching the Felix cartoons when I was a kid, and I even used Felix the Cat as my CB radio call-sign when I was 8 or 9. (Not that I did anything with the CB at that age besides ask passing truckers for their 10-4 and whatever the code was for "what's the weather like?")

My current sig consists of a link to the Save the Internet (http://www.savetheinternet.com/) site, in defense of "a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most."
