I don't want to spam or nuthin', but since I already got a comment or two I figured it was past time I let y'all know I've started a blog to post all the history news I come across which isn't really good thread material.

The History Blog (http://www.thehistoryblog.com/): just a little history stuff. No big whup.

Damn kids and your Blogs and iPods and villas.
In my day if you wanted to tell people anything you wrote it on a stone, tied it to a pigeon and launched it with a Trebuchet.

You just said that to give me a chance to use this new smiley: :kids2day:. That's so sweet of you!

Oh erm, nothing at all, really. I got the template ready-made and thought the tags had a certain old-timey/traveller feel to them.

liv!

Don't you have enough to do?

Is Blake not giving you enough attention?

Good grief. You must be wan and peaked staring at the computer screen eighteen hours a day.

(I interpreted the tags as archivist tags for material objects.)

Forget her, don't I have enough to do? Do you have any idea how many blogs I read every day?

All credit goes to vm on that one. I bought the template ready-made but it was full of bugs and little weird-n-uglies everywhere. He done hooked me up.

The only blog I've ever read was diana's 'Welcome to Balad' (http://pdblack.twistedpair.net/) from her stint in Iraq. I haven't even kept up with it since she's come back to the States, though.

In general, I can't be bothered with blogs as a daily read. I'd create my own, but I think I'd bore the fuck out of myself just doing it. When something comes up that I feel like discussing or ranting about, I just come to one or more of the various BBs that I frequent and make posts in those places.

livius, I finally had a chance to check on your history blog. It's a great idea, well executed. I was afraid that I would not be able to visit without making huge time commitments to get any benefit, but I am delighted to see that each entry gives me just the right amount of information to inform me and hook me to read more from the linked articles.

(BTW, the formatting doesn't work for me a lot of the time using MSIE on WinXP Media Center. Let me know if you want more details on how/what didn't work.)

I'm handling the tech support on liv's blog, and if you're at 1024x768 or lower I'm already aware of the problem (though not the solution).

If not, that's bad news! Tell me more, tell me more...

I'm at 1680 x 1050.
I also have the text size (set under the MSIE View menu) to be "Largest", though changing that didn't seem to make any difference to the size of the text or the formatting . Of course, that's true for the vB boards and many other sites, as well. Just a dumb gripe from me. ( :examine: )

If I come straight in to http://www.thehistoryblog.com/ the different sections are misplaced. The first two links show the result when I come straight in from the address/URL above.

Screenshot 1: (http://www.pescifish.net/screenshots/hisBlog1-Main.jpg)
The text section background is skewed to the right, but the text is not, so some of the text sits on top of the dark left side background/border.

Screenshot 2: (http://www.pescifish.net/screenshots/hisBlog2-RightMenu.jpg)
The section of the screen with the right link menus is way way down the page. After scrolling way past the end of the text section, the right menus show up.

Screenshot 3: (http://www.pescifish.net/screenshots/hisBlog3-Categores.jpg)
The screen loads well if I click on any of the links from the Archives or Categories right menu.

Screenshot 4: (http://www.pescifish.net/screenshots/hisBlog4-Comments.jpg)
Even from the pages that loaded ok, if I click on "Comments", the formatting is messed up again. (Oh and, what's so hideous about the dress/top the woman is wearing in that photo? I mean, I understand the comments on the hands which are distorted in a goofy way by the photo lens, but... What's so wrong with a standard light summer top/dress? )

Solution: FireFox.

Hmm. The layout looked fine when I visited last week, but now it looks as if a strip of the blue left border has come loose and is now obscuring part of the text. I just spent 10 minutes trying to crop and resize the goddamned screencap, but I can't shrink it enough to make it attachable and still clear enough to be of any freaking use. Viewing in IE6.

As far as I can tell that's a problem with MSIE at every resolution except the one I'm using (1600x1200).

Is there a CSS doctor in the house?

Sock Puppet
06-26-2006, 06:27 PM
... but I would swear that the same problem didn't exist last week, and I haven't changed my resolution (1024 x 768; 1600x1200 would take waaaay too much tweaking to work for me on this system).

I found a little time to kill... it seems to be the "previous entries" bit at the bottom of the main column that's throwing it out:

<div class="navigation"><div style="padding:0 25px 5px 90px">
<div class="left"><a href="http://www.thehistoryblog.com/page/2/">&laquo; Previous Entries</a></div>
<div class="right"></div>
</div></div>

My guess is that playing round with this bit of html should fix the problem; it's probably not inheriting some style properly in IE.

How do ye have the time, liv? Doth ye have these forums to manage, ye real work to do, and ye life to live...

Ye can see that just the petty IB itself has kept ye little friend busy.

Thank you! Fragment's clue was a big help, so thanks fragment!

I'd also like to thank the producers, directors and the entire supporting cast. It was really their hard work and dedication to the project that made it all possible.

Unfortunately there's still some ugliness for MSIE users, but at least it's nothing utterly page deforming now.

You could do something with the Gospel of Judas. I read about it in Nat'l Geographic a few months back. Apparently, the translation is online now.
