Hehe.
Yeah the Secret Service investigating threats of violence directed toward the President is not at all unique to the Bush administration. As far as I know they've always done it. It's far more jaw dropping to me that so many presumably American posters on LiveJournal seem to be oblivious to - or think they're immune from - the laws here. The fact that so many people suggested she contact the ACLU stunned me. Threatening the Presidents life simply isn't a right in this country. I don't think that's insane. And besides the SS talked to the girl for five minutes and left, so there's no case for the ACLU to defend.
As for the blogger I have no idea why she was fired, but if it was for the reasons cited in the article I'd be very suprised if she isn't reinstated after a brief legal fight. I suspect, though, that there is more to the story then was revealed in that article. I dunno.
The last story about the Bush re-election campaign site having access restricted to American proxy servers seems incomplete too. I can imagine a lot of technical justifications for it, and not a whole lot of political ones. I definitely can't imagine why the administration would want to prevent the soldiers in the field - who of course can vote for Bush - from seeing the site. And for that matter I can't really think of a good reason they wouldn't want anyone in the world to see it.

I actually found the original post on Google archives, and frankly, SOMEONE NEEDS A FUCKING SENSE OF HUMOUR! Scroll down to the first "October 14th" entry.
That is not a threat of violence. It is a joke. In fact, I'd say it's a less serious threat to someone's person than crazy Christians praying for god to strike Kerry down, because they are actually serious. The general agreement is that she was reported because of some troll on LJ who didn't like her for whatever reason.

Oh yeah, I agree that it's obviously a joke and that it's very probable that the only reason the SS showed up is 'cause some idiot reported her to the FBI. But they always err on the side of caution when it comes to possible threats to the Presidents life. I'm sure they knew it was a joke the minute they read it, but imagine how many heads would roll if Annie went and killed GWB and someone leaked that the FBI had received that tip and didn't follow up on it.
I had the FBI show up at my house once 'cause this idiot girl I lived with stole a tombstone from a graveyard, and one of my genuinely insane housemates called the federal judge who was handling his Grand Jury indictment (long story) and told him she was a witch. Apparently they are required to investigate (or were 15 years ago) every report of "occult" activity...

Give it up, vm. When someone hates a group so much that the very idea of tens of millions of people dying in a natural disaster makes them dance with glee, I doubt any possible explanation will make a difference. She's going to see what she wants to see, regardless. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I doubt I will be.

Sit on your goddamn high horse you fucking cunt. You don't know shit, and you aren't yet old enough to realize what a dumb cunt you behave like.
Too much hatred in this world and it's about time the high and mighty in other nations realize you have the same fucking disease Bush does, you just lack the power to fuck people over with your narrow mindedness.
You aren't better than us, and your constant demeaning of us and belittling of us just demonstrates your patheticness.

To be fair dantonac she was pretty clearly criticising the Bush administration, not the American people. Otherwise I don't think she would've suggested we all go live in Australia if Bush is re-elected. Why would she want Americans to come live in her country if she hates us? Okay so you do realize you just did in the second paragraph what you're accusing her of doing in the first paragraph, right? Australia isn't an "irrelevant" country, neither have the millions of people who live there done anything to deserve your scorn. Jesus man, she was being hyperbolic. But they always err on the side of caution when it comes to possible threats to the Presidents life. When I was living in Wyoming, the Secret Service pressed charges against a quadriplegic Vietnam veteran, an impatient in the Veterans Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming for threatening Reagan's life, as though he could actually carry it out. What was he going to do, bite Reagan's wattle?
Apparently he had made threats during a Reagan television appearance and someone in the hospital day room reported him and he refused to retract it. That's what I remember reading in the Casper Star Tribune back then.
I don't know if they went through with prosecution of the charges or not. Once again, we need to have a satellite "Follow-Up" channel, an all news channel that just follows up on news stories, because the news media seldom ever does.

I dont think I take exception with the content of your post, I do however have problems with your incredibly abusive tone. Keep in mind that this comes from someone who has no problem telling someone to fuck off. I just dont know if calling someone a cunt is likely to change her mind. Take a deep breath dantonac, believe me I can understand the reason for your anger, but in spite of the rather poor wording of her post I really do think the young woman in question meant no harm.
It ofttimes does appear from the outside with all the fundie crap and neo-con blatherings, that your nation has gone stark raving mad, but on closer look one soon realizes that the vast majority of americans are at least as sane as anyone else on the planet, and indeed one hell of a lot saner than many.
There is one hell of a big price to be paid for being the big kid on the block and this has always been so, unfortunately for you and many others its america's turn, and so many stones will be thrown.
PS: please do not call her a cunt. She certainly has done nothing to deserve that level of abuse. It not only demeans Adora, but all women in general. And does not speak very well of your own self-esteem

while I often have a problem with lots of things about america and I definitely cant stand the bush administration. I think that the SS was just being thorough in regards to the first link, on the other hand, if this woman is put on the nofly list or taken to camp xray, I will be as outraged and pissed off as anyone else.
as to the second link. Wile I think delta is out of line it is important to remember that employees do give up certain rights when they accept employment.
and to the third link, I am not really sure about what the bush administration hopes to accomplish.
finally, thanks for the offer of relocation. I think I might actually consider moving to another country in the case of bush reelection. I am not saying that I will definitely move, but I think I would like to.
Ps please take the high road in regards to dantoac, it doesnt seem likely that he is going to and while I probably wouldnt in your shoes, it would probably be the best thing to do.

My hostility is measured and in my opinion appropriately offensive and my demeaning the entire nation of Australia is simply a returning of the ball.

You've contradicted yourself. If your response was proportional to the OP then it wouldn't be an over-reaction, it would just be a reaction. Of course I don't think such abuse is at all proportional to her comment. She made a careless insulting generalization about America, you have made numerous direct, personal insults to her. There really is no comparing the two.

we live and vote in america we are at least partially responsible for the things done in our name. Consent of the governed and all that. I think some criticism is warranted, although I too am often tired of antiamerican rhetoric, it is important to note that it is often justified. Furthermore, there is a difference between unwarranted hatred of america and specific problems with actiosn that america has taken and continues to take.

Yes, dantonac's reaction is out of proportion to the OP. However, Adora has shown a clear pattern of anti-American bigotry. She does in fact exhibit a high and mighty attitude, and she does consistently demean and belittle people with no provocation. I must admit that my own initial reaction to her OP here was similar to dantonac's. Not quite as vitriolic, but I certainly understand where he's coming from.
Hell, given her stated preferences she should be happy about dantonac's posts. Unless, of course, she's only interested in dishing it out.

I haven't personally noticed a signficant amount of anti-American bigotry in her posts. I have seen her exhibit a high and mighty attitude and I've seen her belittle people with no provocation, but not often enough that I would say "consistently", personally. That's just my perception though.

This post is not meant as an attack on anyone, however let me point out something by using the old well-worn cliché "Those living in glass houses should not throw stones" I for one have been damned ashamed of the way the Australian government has treated refugees in recent years. I won't go into my grievances with american governments in recent years as they have been pretty well raked been been over the coals on the internet, and mostly by american citizens I might add. As for my own country there is enough crap going on to allow me to do no other than catalogue my shame until I drop dead of exhaustion. What I'm trying to say in my inarticulate way is let us all try to be just a little bit more charitable towards each other and the nations we have either the misfortune or fortune to reside in.
Its damned inappropriate to claim one is a great human being by accident of place of birth, and its just as inappropriate to claim someone is a lousy human being by accident of place of birth.

There are many many other reasons I consider the US a crazy place, not just these strange events that I have been informed of lately. I also consider Spooks wasting time on things like this crazy. I mean, seriously, anyone can see it's a joke. It just seems strange to condone such time-wasting when they should be profiling lonely male Saudi Arabian university students.
