so there is this gorgeous semi stray cat, I happen to know that various people around here feed it but no owns it. I am thinking of keeping her.

She is a purr box by the way, and is incredibly friendly.

My great-grandmother had an enormous orange tabby tom that she named Thomas Edidomus James Alexander Kidwallacy Cat, or Tom Cat, for short. You can get pretty creative, if you want.

Cats is way cool.

Strays can make the best buddies. She is very pretty too.

I call my adopted stray Anna. I've always preferred to call my animal friends by people names. I like to think it reflects my respect for and treatment of them as friends, not as mere pets, or much worse--"dumb animals."

It's been my experience that consciously treating another intelligent animal as your friend can allow for a much deeper bond and level of communication between you. Good luck with her and let us know what you decide to call her, OK?

Penthesilea, after the Amazon queen. Lea for short.

The name Chuck Fristians is free now.

Otherwise I don't have any ideas. Make sure the name has at least one hard consonant (b,p,t,d,k or g) in it. Cat's hear those sounds better than sounds like n,m,sh and s. Not that she'll necessarily respond to her name anyway, even if she knows what it is.

Eloise.

Sarah-Jane.

That's what I get from looking at her, but if you post some different pics or more about her nature I'll come up with some other ideas.

Beautiful cat! What is she eating? It looks like a monkey's paw. :monkey:

I don't have any ideas for a good name. Names usually come to me after being around the animal for a bit. As JoeP suggests, maybe more photos would help me in this case, as well. More photos would be fun, regardless of the naming activity!

Oh I don't know either, however she is the spitting image of one of the cats that own me.. I call my little friend Puddle Jump because it so aptly described her rambunctious nature when she was a kitten. I call her mother Belle because she remains just as dignified as her name.

So many years, so many loving creatures have came and gone from my life. My usual method of naming a new friend is to observe their personalities for at least a day or two, the most appropriate name will suddenly jump into my mind, as did Puddle Jump's name :cat:

When I get a house and get a cat, I'll probably use the name "Chairman Meow." :D

Hmmm, how about Feisty? Frisky?

Well, this isn't specific to any one animal, but I want someone to name someone else Chupacabra. I considered renaming Sluggo, even, but I'd have to change his voter registration and shit, so I decided against it. But it would be such an excellent name.

My brother used to take care of two semi-feral cats that he named Office Clark (Clark with an a) and Maths Professor. You could use one of those, probably, if you sent him royalties.

Let's see. Brian Wilson probably doesn't have enough cats named after him.

How about Dirty Sanchez? Mothra? Batman? Rupert Pupkin? Zsa Zsa?

I'm stopping now.

On the other hand she could be called Dogless Davina :yup:

Um, bey, what about "Slathering Beast"?

Great call, Joe. She could be Beast or Beastie for short. I think it kicks ass.

slathering beast does indeed rock.

plus she so isnt, she has to be the most affectionate cat I have ever seen.

It is just like calling shrub a compassionate conservative, you know a nickname that is actually the opposite.

I think I will keep her.

She definitely needs a name, and I do like slathering beast.

Excuse me for a moment beyelzu, you, a mere human have no choice one way or another regarding cats ........ She thinks she will keep you.

Now that little misunderstanding has been cleared up I wish you both a long and happy life together. :milkcat: :affection:

interestingly, I thought that maybe she had wished for a human, and got me.

fucking monkey paw.

It was actually a piece of cooked italian sausage, which she didnt like, but she loves sandwiches, as she tries to steal mine, and she likes ravioli. I didnt think cats eat bread,

She also likes palmetto bugs, which is really cool.

well, I did pick her up and carry her in to my house. Of course, I have no proof that I did it of my own free will, and she does seem to like it here

and she has some serious purr powers.

Congratulations, Bub...

I, too, am staff to a former street cat. He is the friendliest and smartest cat to which I've ever been indentured.

I had to name him in a hurry, because we (he and I) were trying to get him accepted by the female ogre who ran the household and "didn't like cats". I figured giving him a name would help establish his identity. I named him Hobbes, after Bill Watterson's delightful comic stuffed tiger character. He's lived up to it.

(She demanded that he be an "outside cat"...I nodded knowingly to that. Sure enough, by two months later, she was inviting him to snuggle under the covers at night. So much for the "outside cat" routine. Heh... What a schmoozer he is!)

I often use "Household Pest" and "Worthless Fuzzwad" to refer to Hobbes...Given the manner in which they are spoken to him, he thinks they are terms of endearment.

Later, after his rushed name was well established, my wife (the female ogre) and I decided that he should have been named "Woody", because of the tortoiseshell pattern on his back that looked like woodgrain, including a knothole.

So... I'm with Toad (or was it Pescifish? Or both?) on this. I'd wait a bit and see if her personality suggests anything. I would recommend that whatever name you select that you not be embarassed to call her name so that it can be heard throughout the neighborhood.

If I got myself a cat, I would name him Beelzebub or Pol Pot or Cthulhu or Rumsfeld. I would probably go with Cheshire, as in the Cheshire Cat.

godfryCat-hoo-loo, of course.

H. P. Lovecraft (http://www.cthulhu.org/cthulhu/index.html)
The actual sound - as nearly as human organs could imitate it or human letters record it - may be taken as something like Khlul'-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly.

Hey, thanks, Worn.

Another couple names I thought appropriate for cats: Bedlump...Underfoot.

Or, Al Faazi-waad...or, for a female, maybe Fataz Faazi-waad.

Hey beyelzu, just wanted to let you know that you are on my mind. I noticed that you have not checked in yet, but I sure hope your little buddy has made her way home.

The surest way to ensure that feline friends will stick around is to have them spayed or neutered ..... saves a hell of a lot of trouble in many other ways as well.

I'll second Toad's recommendation and note that your friend may have several households in the neighborhood at which she is auditioning the humans therein. She may be back...she may have it made in the shade, and you were just a transient diversion.

You sound like you could use a feline buddy. If she doesn't show up in a month or so, you might consider going to the nearest animal shelter and writing out a full pardon and springing one (or more) of them. Take your time in the cat room and let one (or more) pick you out. If they're smart, the shelter will outfit you with a discount spay/neuter coupon, vaccination discounts and a list of decent veterinarians in your immediate area, along with your license. Worming is probably a good idea, too.

Also, I recommend "Advantage" flea control.

That's how we got our cat, Hank. He was hanging out near the house, and getting thinner & thinner. We started feeding him, after some time and a couple vet visits (he got into fights), our then landlord took pity and let us keep the cat. We found out later that he was visiting all the neighbors, no doubt looking for the biggest saps.

I hope your friend comes back, beyelzu.

How do you pronounce "Cthulhu"?

godfry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu

Cthulhu (alternate spellings / names: Tulu, Cthulu and many others) is a fictional character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictional_character), one of a pantheon of fictional Great Old Ones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Old_One) of the Cthulhu Mythos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos) in the writings of H. P. Lovecraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._Lovecraft). "Cthulhu" is usually pronounced "kuh-THOO-loo", but according to Lovecraft, this is an attempt by human speakers to pronounce a name that is actually in an ancient language alien to them. Lovecraft speculated that KHLUL'HLOO, might be closer to the original name. Cthulhu is an evil godlike being who would supposedly lay waste to the world if ever awoken from his slumber in the sunken city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City) of R'lyeh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%27lyeh), located somewhere under the South Pacific (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean).
