I particularly like self-empowerment projects like the Sewing Centers (http://www.spiritofamerica.net/cgi-bin/soa/project.pl?rm=view_project&request_id=16) and the umbrella organizations supporting local activists like Equality in Iraq (http://www.equalityiniraq.com/whowe.htm).
