As I just mentioned in my movies I've seen (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/journal.php?do=view&journalid=3) journal, I saw the remake of Dawn of the Dead last night, and it rocked. I'm not a big horror fan in general (except for the Hellraiser, Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises), nor am I a big fan of zombies. After all, how scary is something that moves at a snails pace? But these new zombies are crazy 'cause they can run! And fast! I was on the edge of my seat through this whole flick. Imagine 28 Days Later except with cleaner special-effects, non-stop action and Ving Rhames (Marcellus Washington in Pulp Fiction). You've really gotta see it.

I'm not a big fan of horror movies myself, but I have to admit that fast zombies are certainly a whole lot scarier. Every time I see a "standard" zombie movie, I always want to yell to the characters: "Stroll! Stroll for your lives! The zombies are coming!"

I suppose one reason why slow-moving zombies could be considered scary is because their very lack of mobility highlights their utterly relentless nature. No matter what you do, they just. keep. coming. Eventually, you'll have to stop for food/rest/sleep. They won't.

Even so, I always wondered why people in standard zombie flicks were foolish enough to let themselves get cornered by attackers who had all the mobility of crippled snails.

I think Shaun of the Dead got it about right. Your standard zombie is a.) a frighteningly good metaphor for the general mindlessness that pervades our society, and b.) only dangerous if you're foolish enough to let large numbers of them corner you.

Cheers,

Michael

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I loved it. That, and the blatant Resident Evil references. Heh heh heh.

28 Days Later was a fucking brilliant movie. Probably for me, the best Zombie movie ever. (And OMG SEKRIT ENDING!)

28 days later was uber badass, I have to agree. It is probably my second favorite zombie movie behind the original dawn of the dead.

The remake of dawn of the dead was really good, but I liked the first one more, because the first one had a cooler mall and had some good fun at the expense of the slow zombies.

On the other hand the game of kill the zombie that looks like a famous person from the remake was pretty badass.

I wanna see Shaun of the Dead too, Michael. Gotta wait for Netflix to have it though.

Adora and Beyelzu, why do you and others call 28 Days Later a zombie flick? Aren't zombies resurrected from the dead by definition? The monsters in 28 Days Later were infected with a virus, not dead. :P

Honestly I've never seen the first Dawn of the Dead 'cause as I said, zombie movies don't usually do it for me. I'll probably have to now though.

Oh and when I was just Googling to see if I was right about the virus thing I found a forum wherein someone referred to Evil Dead as a zombie movie. I don't know if I'd call it that, but since it's one of the best movies ever made that would have to be the zombie winner for me if it's a zombie flick.

28 days later was an updated new look at the zombie genre, while they were not technically zombies. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck and hungers for human flesh and is mindless like a duck then its a duck. Really, the new dawn of the dead is one half original dawn of the dead and one have 28 days later.

The evil dead is a zombie movie, it has zombies.

Pfff, details. Are you going to tell me Resident Evil isn't a zombie game (or movie), because it's all the evil Umbrella corp.'s virus?

Real zombies aren't dead though. Just living creatures induced into a brainless trance, with a lot of drugs and psychosomosis. So yes, they are still zombies, if not the traditional-movie-risen-from-the-dead kind.

\Your standard zombie is a.) a frighteningly good metaphor for the general mindlessness that pervades our society, and b.) only dangerous if you're foolish enough to let large numbers of them corner you.

That combined with the loneliness of the survivors and their tragic yet inevitable flaws that lead to their defeat; and there is everything you need to make an existential statement about the human condition.

I love the sheer anarchy of a zombie flick. Good zombie flicks poke at authority, make fun of the rules, and flaunt convention. Until recently, I have enjoyed the fact that zombie movies are not very frightening. These new fast zombies are an added bonus.

But then maybe I have a personal bias for zombie flicks. I remember getting drunk for the first time while watching the original Night of the Living Dead.

"Bah-bah-rah, their coming for you, Bah-bah-rah."
