So... According to my calendar, tomorrow (July 1) is Canada Day.
What's that all about?
Do Canucks exchange gifts on Canada Day?
Or...Is it just another Hallmark holiday to sell all those Canada Day cards?
Mebbe...you sit around all day drinking cheap beer, fire up the grill and charcoalate some random animal parts, and get sunburned, like us USers do on the 4th? If so, do you end the day by setting your neighbor's property on fire with illegal fireworks?
What's it all aboot, eh?
Beer & Fireworks, mostly.

It means that 139 years ago, on July 1, 1867, Canada became a Dominion, i.e. half a country, by means of the passage of the British North America Act in Parliament, if I remember correctly. It didn't technically become a fully independent Commonwealth nation until 1982. Canada Day used to be known as Dominion Day; pretty funny, when contrasted with "Independence Day" three days later. "What's your national holiday?" "Well, we celebrate when we passed from dependence to indentured servitude."
Except in Quebec. They never accepted the 1982 arrangement, and most people there already celebrated St-Jean-Baptiste, anyway.

As I explained in Chat, we club a seal or two and drink beers around a barbeque. The we yell "Timber!" as the log igloos fall.

Don't know about Canada Day cards..never bought one, don't recall seeing one.
Canada Day...what to do. Well, for starters, don't try to go grocery shopping cause all the damm grocery stores are closed. And take your umbrella down to the park to watch fireworks in the drizzle. Actually, it was quite nice.
I didn't see any seals to club in the pool...but there were some annoying robins protecting their ugly offspring. They didn't bother me in the pool...but when I go down to turn my pool pump on they get all worked up cause I'm too close to their ugly babies. I don't have the heart to get rid of them though...must be getting soft in my old age.
But I did kill some wasps on Canada day.
And did drink a beer or two. And had the BBQ the next day - with some of the kids over to help us eat some kabob type things.
So my guess is that its very much like July 4th, minus a bunch of patriotism...with smaller steaks... and same beer with different labels.

That does sound nice, actually. Beats nursing a sunburn and being surrounded by the sweaty masses.

Yeah... Plus, the fireworks exploding in the cloud cover must give it a surreal effect.

It did it did! I made dragon tea (Pot and alcohol, raspberry rum was my choice) Worked like a hot damn, much better than the t3's they pescribed me, and the pot isnt addivtive, and it dosnt cause me to get migranes like pain killers do.
Its a good thing.
And no more tooth ache I had that sucker pulled the fuck out yesterday :)
Now I just have a gapeing hole in my mouth to heal and get used to....it dosnt hurt at all now.
*edited to add now if only they could invent a drug that would improve my spelling! And no more Pot for Julie for a long time...kids were gone for a weeks vacation with grandparents, now they are back. I never drink or smoke pot when the kids are home.

I dunno, but at least we only have to deal with it one day out of the year, by the sounds of it.

Oh. We have those in the pond just outside work. When I looked out the window today, I thought for a moment that one of them was actually a beaver.
True story.

If so, do you end the day by setting your neighbor's property on fire with illegal fireworks? Pretty much. 'cept I'm working the 1st and taking the 30th off instead so I can have a sane long weekend instead of one tiny free day by itself. So when the workday's over maybe I'll see some nice fireworks.

Likewise. They were fired from like a block away, so I got a terrific view. Due to wind conditions I did not actually smell the gunpowder this year, unlike last year.
