I'm not doing anything unusual this year, just gonna walk up and down the streets dressed as myself ..... that always sends small children screaming and sobbing into their mother's arms.

Oh what fun :woohoo:

In the hotel lobby across the skywalk from my workplace about an hour ago, I saw some dude dressed as King Ahab of Israel, wearing a blue, gold and white striped robe and sandals. How do I know he was King Ahab? The young woman with him was dressed like a Jezebel. :D

I just hope that no trick or treaters come by my place. I can't afford to have anything for them :(Just turn off all the lights, the little goblins will probably go on down the street. Besides, tomorrow night's Halloween, not this evening.

The last time Halloween fell on Sunday, I was living in Utah. Some little kids came to the door. I told them to come back tomorrow, Halloween is tomorrow. The mother with them said "Huh?" I repeated what I said. They went away. I repeated that performance about 50 times that evening. Too bad. Halloween is the 31st, not the 30th, and for sure not the 29th. Mormons usually reserve Monday evenings for "Family Home Evening". When Halloween fell on Monday, the kids started coming around on Saturday again. Same deal. Too bad. I'm a mean old man, aren't I?

:pumpkin: Happy Halloween! :ghost:

I haven't dressed in a costume since I was a kid, for a party or any other reason. Until a few years ago I never bought candy for trick or treaters, either. I would just turn off all the lights and hide or go out so I didn't have to. Both primarily because I thought I'd look ridiculous. I'm not a pillar of self-confidence even still, but I wouldn't be opposed to dressing up for a party now. And as I said I've passed out candy for the last few years so apparently I'm past the feeling that only old losers and/or married people stay home and pass out candy.

So is anyone going to a costume party or anything? :witchfly:

My daughter and a bunch of friends went round the neighbourhood in their costumes (with some of the parents) and got a good haul. Some houses said "no! Halloween is tomorrow!" so she wants to go again tonight (which is OK; she understands it's bedtime straight afterwards for school tomorrow). Of course, those people might be dastardly curmudgeons who'll say "no, we've got nothing for you" tonight.

I did gate duty. We have a motorised wooden gate. The visiting kids ring the bell ... I wait for a few seconds, standing behind the far end of the gate ... then I open the gate a few feet ... the kids wait for someone to appear ... then one of them peeps in and I jump out :wmummy: (damn lazy, I wasn't in costume). Scaring satisfied :muahaha:, I then distribute sweets (aka candy).

I've never been trick or treating on account of them not doing Halloween in Italy when I was a girl, although I hear you bourgeois capitalist American satanist pigdogs with your "candy corn" and your "plastic Spiderman outfits" have infiltrated there too, now. Do they trick or treat in England? They have the best candies there. Cola fizzes beat M&Ms hand down.

Oh, and yes, Happy Halloween and all that. Rah rah. :dracula:

I like Halloween--we get about a half dozen kids, but we buy tons of candy. . . hmm, what will we do with the leftovers? Hmm. Heehee. This year we waited until too late to buy a pumpkin, so we bought some little luminaries with jackolantern faces on them.

I'm always so excited to have trick o treaters, that I have to refrain from taking pictures of them! Growing up, no one ever came to our house since we lived off the beaten track--well, a couple of kids who knew where my mom lived might come by (my mom was a elementary school principal). But that was still rare.

I hope that all the neighborhood kids didn't go trickotreating yesterday--I will be so sad.

Toad is gonna declare a special day that will be a day of protest against all overly commercialized "special" days throughout the year. There is enough land utilized for the production of orange orbs to be used for a fews hours one night to feed a good sized third world nation. Tomorrow morning all the little under-paid wage slaves at my local wallymart will be frenetically replacing tawdry Halloween crap with tawdry Christmas crap. At the very least this annual display at wallymart turns and churns my delicate stomach.
As if that is not sickening enough they will be assailing ears with carols within a few short days.

So sayeth Toad the curmudgeon

Happy Halloween everyone :chin: and ho ho fucking ho

The wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick_or_treat) is short and has a slight air of uncertainty and incompleteness, but nevertheless is full of fascinating points. It confirms the practice originated in the British Isle and is still common there.

*twiddles thumbs*

We don't really celebrate it here. Some business groups try and exploit it, but we just don't really care. We have no spiritual connection to it, and it really doesn't have any other kind of meaning, so *shrugs*.

In my house, if we get any kids showing up at our door, they usually leave with rotten fruit. Heh, serves them right for not being good kids and studying for exams, which everyone has right now (being end-of-year and all).

I've always loved Halloween, as it always seemed to be the holiday of the weird and bizarre. In truth, I'd celebrate it year round if possible. Inside decorations almost never get taken down, actually. :pumpkin:

Now, I don't believe in ghosts or anything, but I've heard that this forum was built on the site of an old graveyard. Truth is, sometimes while browsing late at night, I've heard strange noises. Posts get rearranged when no one is looking and sometimes there are glimpses of someone or something lurking just out of sight...

I guess I've been out of Michigan long enough. It didn't even occur to me to wonder how many buildings in Detroit would be torched last night. I haven't checked the news reports but for years there was a curfew in the city on the night before Halloween (Devil's Night) because arson became so prevalent - dozens of (almost always abandoned, I believe) buildings burned to the ground.

Z went trick or treating with the Bishop's daughter and his wife. I was going to take them, but as I was leaving I got a bee sting in my foot and it's now all swollen and itchy. (I know, I know - wear shoes..)

Anyway, I had to laugh when A's mother dropped Z off. She said that they had had one old guy say that he didn't want to participate and wouldn't be contributing to the evening because he is a Christian and Halloween is the work of the devil. She was chuckling away about it, too; said that they just thanked him anyway, and wandered off again. She didn't tell him that she was the Bishop's wife. :giggle:

Other than that, Halloween doesn't really happen here. It falls pretty flat every year - it's not part of our culture or history, and it's totally the wrong time of year for it down here. I like Halloween, but in NZ it's just wrong place/wrong time.

I've always been intimidated by the idea of trying to carve a jack o'lantern. Making scarecrows from old clothes was a favorite part of my childhood, though it hasn't been done since then. All I got done this year was the voodoo doll, though there is still some hope the miniature Grim Reaper will be finished today. All that's left is to make a cowl for the robe (possible) and a scythe (unlikely today.)

I used some, Most likely between cleaning up the living room and redecorating the bedroom this weekend, it got chipped off as well.

What is the Ghost Train Festival?
Tweetsie Railroad, a local Wild West theme park (don't ask why it's in the Appalachians) does a thing for Halloween that runs weekend nights in October. They have the locomotive painted up with skulls and redo the buildings around horror themes. There was a haunted house, a 3D maze and a cheezy skit that ripped off Young Frankenstein. It was pretty fun, except for the near freezing weather. Riding the train through the mountains at night was the best part.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Like, an insane amount of fun. They do it every year, I'm guessing? We have something similar involving the train, but the closest corn maze I know of is an hour away :(

(I usually skip the train thing here, it involves a laser show involving the Confederate Memorial (http://ngeorgia.com/attractions/stonemountaincarving.html). The people who attend are in 1. NASCAR gear, 2. Some form of Confederate flag attire, or 3. shirtless. It's not that so much as the fact that I don't put my hand over my heart and tear up at God Bless The USA. I was laughing from the fun most the night! But I didn't fall over even once all night; hell, not even once all weekend. Success!

Ymir's blood's black polish is stunning. His hands are suited to it and we had a blast playing with other cosmetic items. I had had my nails done up with a sort of dark French manicure: black nail beds and blood red tips. I tried the black lipstick thing, which gave me a horrible fright every time I caught a glimpse in the mirror. :yikes:

The train ride in the dark, thick woods and the carved rock tunnels was a neat experience.
