View Full Version : would anyone like to play mafia here?

beyelzu
07-18-2006, 07:13 PM
mafia is a pretty simple and fun game with lots of variants. basically the people that decide to play are in a town. there is a night phase and a day phase. during the day phase the town votes to lynch someone. night happens when a majority of players vote to lynch the same person. that night the mafia kill someone. the townspeople win if they kill all the mafia. the mafia wins when there are equal numbers of mafia and townspeople left.

there are a couple of specials for the townspeople as well. there is a cop that can check another player every night and see whether or not they are mafia. and a doctor that can keep one player every night from being killed by the mafia. but the doctor cannot protect the same person during two consecutive nights.

i have been playing it over at ii, and i was wondering if anyone would want to play it here.

also, if you need in clarification on game dynamics let me know.

Lauri told me she's been playing an RPG at II, is this the same one?

In any case I'm interested, so long as it doesn't require too much time investment.

beyelzu
07-18-2006, 07:35 PM
nope it doesnt require much time investment. and it is probably the game she is playing, i think i have seen her post in the thread. but i havent read all the mafia games there.

realistically we need about 10-12 people to play with 2 mafia, 1 doc, 1 cop to make a good game. it doesnt really take that much time. and since it isnt timed or anything, the days end when a majority vote, so its kind of organic.

Not sure we can get enough people, but sounds cool to me. :yup:

beyelzu
07-18-2006, 08:25 PM
well we have more than enough active posters. im hoping thatthe members that like to post in frivolous threads like myself will be down to play. also there is a variant that allows the first dead person to run the game and recieve the pms from the mafia on who they want to kill and so one. if we agreed to play that variant then i could play as well instead of just running the game.

I'm in, depending on my role.

ETA: N/M, I cannot guarantee that I can be on every night and day.

Crumb

I don't believe such a guarantee is necessary.

beyelzu
07-18-2006, 11:07 PM
you dont have to be on every day and night, night comes whenever enough people have voted to lynch someone. if everyone checks in every couple of days it should work out just fine.

with 12 players, and assuming that 2 players are killed a cycle, then the game takes 4-5 days, the mafia win when there are only 4 players left if they both survive. so i figure about a week or so, the first day might take 2 or 3 days of real time, but then it will start moving quicker.

simple majority lynch's someone once someone is at a majority they are lynched and night happens. you can pm anybody about anything. truth or fiction. the mafia are told who the other mafia are. you cannot forward pms or quote pms in thread (except for special circumstances as decided by whoever is running the game), you can tell someone about a pm you recieved either in pm or in thread. only need a few more people and we can play.

beyelzu
07-19-2006, 07:19 PM
well you just vote to lynch someone you suspect of being mafia. like real voting you actually dont have to have a reason, but it works best if you do. while the good people vote to try to find mafia, the bad people tyr to vote the innocent off. one way of detecting mafia is by seeing who voted for innocents and presumed innocents for no particular reasons. also mafia generally keep a low profile. it really is easy and fun to play.

any chance i can change your mind SharonDee?

if you have any questions i would be glad to answer them.

I haven't read the II link yet so have absolutely no idea what do do.

Wikipedia has a good article on this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf_%28game%29)

Further, at IIDB we are playing both Mafia and Werewolf. I am assuming this one is played the same as our Mafia version;

12 players, 1 possible cop, 1 possible doc, 1 - 4 Mafia.

At night the cop choose's some one to learn if they are innocent or Mafia

The Doc choose some one to protect from a Mafia kill

The Mafia colaborate to kill some one.

During the day every one talks and votes on who to lynch, the town trying to kill scum (mafia).

No PMs allowed accept by the Mafia at night to decide who to kill, no action in the game thread at night.

How's that for a quick sum up?

The penis wearing the T-shirt told me he was trying to start up a game here so viola, here I am.

There's a great joke somewhere in between the penis wearing the t-shirt and the beaver, but I'm damned if I can come up with it. All I can do is give your avatar a nice transparent background, should you care to use it, and of course, to welcome you to FF. :welcome1:

http://www.freethought-forum.com/livius/beaver.gif

Crumb
07-19-2006, 10:20 PM
Well the talking dick said that PMs would be allowed. The rules are up to him in this one. Why are PMs not allowed between players normally?

Spenser
07-19-2006, 10:28 PM
Its up to the GM (game master or talking dick in this case), I just assumed he was going more Mafia style then Werewolf style (as far as the way we play it on IIDB). Since many of you are new its probably better to start with out them (PMs) so the entire game takes place within the thread. That way we don't get low posting because every one is PMing the hell out of each other.

Also, every one here should learn the term WIFOM (http://mafiascum.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?action=browse;oldid=WineInFrontOfMe;id=Wine_in_Front_of_Me) because you all will suffer it.

Crumb
07-19-2006, 10:32 PM
Yeah I have read two of the mafia games on IIDB and encountered WIFOM. Seems this game is full of it. If PMS moves too much of the chatter out of the thread than I agree that maybe they shouldn't be used. I can see how it would make a "purer" game that way.

It's more fun in person. The whole point is being able to read people's faces and body language, then persuade people for fun. What makes it so funny is that everybody gets into these bullshit conversations that are hilarious because in the version I played back in college, you couldn't actually prove very much based on boolean logic. It was entirely social and silly.

Spenser
07-21-2006, 01:02 AM
Its just different online, still fun though. The Werewolf version we play at IIDB is good too, its timed, votes have to be in by 3pm PST and PMs are fair play so the conversations get crazy. Plus we use a lot more roles.

Perry
