View Full Version : PM Receipt Pop-Up: Anyone Else Hate It Like Poison?

You know how every time you send a PM, you get a pop-up asking if you want a receipt and you have to click Okay or Cancel to actually send? You know, this thing:

http://www.freethought-forum.com/images/popup.jpg

Okay well, it pisses me off. I hate it. Just on principle I don't like pop-ups I can't disable, and this one strikes me as particularly pointless.

As it happens, a nice young coder fellow over at vb.org has created a lovely wee hack which removes the pop-up, adds a user option to make receipt requests the default or not, and adds a nice, subtle, understated checkbox in the Additional Options (http://www.freethought-forum.com/images/popup2.jpg) field underneath the PM composition window so you can override the default you've set and choose to request a receipt on a case by case basis.

I'm all for it, needless to say. Does anyone a) give a shit, b) prefer it the way it is now?

Remove it. I find it an annoyance too, as it is another thing that says "cancel" instead of something like "no", so you think you are canceling your PM instead of the receipt.

I feel the same way, when I am tired or not thinking about it, I sometimes forget to hit ok then cancel and fuck my shit up.

I voted that I liked popups but I was thinking of the you have a private message popup. I voted before reading the op and now I feel like a dumbass. :(

Rather polarized questions there, liv! :P

Anyway, yes it's irritating. I can't say I hate it, or it's poison; I can live with it, but given a choice I'd rather not. So I vote for installing the hack.

I don't know what you mean. Your vote for option number one is clearly right up there for all to see. :nail:

That's odd, beyelzu; I am not showing any votes for the "Yes, keep it" option.

Works for me!

Well, fuck me. I thought this was about the PM reciept popup, without which I might not notice I have a PM. Change my vote to "Get rid of the bastage."

livius drusus
11-01-2004, 08:31 PM
Done, warren. I'm beginning to think I might have worded the OP a little vaguely. And here I thought I was being all hardcore and shit. I'm going to have to barrage pz with irresistable PMs just to feel better about myself.

Fixed your vote, Shea, and edited the keep option so it's hopefully a little less ambiguous.

I don't give a shit either way. I usually don't send a receipt request when i send out pm's anyway - and when I do it's a mistake 'cos I just hit enter or something.

But yeah, kill it. It's useless.

I agree with you liv - get rid of it. It annoys me too.

Have you been enjoying fixing all the votes of people who thought you were asking about the pop-up that tells you you have a PM? :giggle:

It makes me feel kinda funny, truth be told. Next time I'll phrase the question and answers more clearly. :sadcheer:

Replace it with:

"Request a read receipt for this message?"

And below it, in very small writing, have "By clicking 'ok', you confirm that you are over 18 and want to go to Uncle Ned's Naughty Midget and Horse Farm" :D

I suppose it would help if the joke was actually funny.

I voted for the last option because I thought the wording of the statement was really cute and seductive. Otherwise I'd vote "I don't give a shit either way" because that's how I feel, but if I feel that way, why the hell would I bother to vote at all? However, I was seduced by the thought and comfort of evilness always by my side.

I'm sorry what are we voting on anyway? ;)

Actually, I like the sound of the hack, but I wish there was a way to remind people to confirm the receipt of the PM. Add a popup for that. :muahaha: 'Cuz either people aren't reading my PMs to them or they forget to scroll down and click the receipt thingie.

Oh yeah, while you are adding popups can you add one that says "Give pesci some extra love and attention today"? The acknowledgment choice could be something like "Immediately, of course". The action after selection should be to open a PM preadressed to me (that's "pescifish") with several of the more comforting smilies already loaded in the text field. Really, I'm sure this would help everyone here -- I know they would all do this on a regular basis if it were just that much easier, you know. If you want, add a button that says "Not today, thanks" but have it spawn an additional 52 popups, to give them additional time to reconsider and make the more appropriate affirmative choice.

Thank you.

Bah, there are sickos in every bunch. At least two more here, in fact. You totally lured Ymir's blood into your coven, dincha?

Well, hell, maybe there is. Let me look around and see what I can find. Probably nothing at this juncture (I doubt there are a lot of gems I've missed when it comes to vB hacks), but I'll definitely add it to the wishlist and then harass vm and JoeP into making it their next project.

Oh and, I'll get right on the Pop-ups O' Love project too.

Oh gosh, no, I was just kidding about adding any popups! I only posted it because I have always thought it ironic that there is an annoying popup for the request for receipt, but in the spot where a popup would be effective, the acknowledgment languishes.

I do think unnecessary popups are very annoying. Maybe there is another way to highlight that section -- perhaps move it above the PM message instead of below it?

I've just finished installing this hack. You can select to request receipts on all PM's by default by checking the appropriate option under Member Options --> Edit Options, and/or you can manually choose whether to request a receipt under Additional Options when you are composing a PM. Please let me know if you have any problems with this.

There is no more pop-up, I'm glad to report. At the bottom of each PM window, you now have a checkbox asking if you want a receipt. You can choose in your Edit Options whether you want that checkbox selected or unselected by default. I think it's unselected (no read receipt) by default.
