Kickass narration, GM vm. Allow me to be the first to say how you doin'? to all the players before the role dole makes it suspicious.

Great start, vm. Inspired. Looking forward to a great game.

Just don't play the game in this thread, day or night. For example a game player speculating about who might be mafia is playing the game. All game play should be kept in the main game thread, and you can only post on that thread during the game "daytime".

Yeah, what kind of sammiches? I have a recipe for homemade meatball subs around here somewhere....

I made a totally kickass pizzaiola tonight. :yum:Mmmmm... what kind of toppings?

It was steak pizzaiola.

Take a chuck steak, cut thinly (about 1 pound). Take a pan, coat with a couple tablespoons of olive oil. Add a couple large cloves of garlic, sliced thinly. Cook on low heat until golden brown. Add the steak and brown. Add some diced onion (used half a large onion), basil and oregano for flavor. When steak is almost cooked all the way through (will only take about 10 minutes), add a can (15 ounces) of diced tomatos. Cook for an additional 10 minutes or so.

I also steamed some fresh green beans, used that as a bed and served the pizzaiola on top of it.

Should the recruit really take place instead of the kill? The villagers will know someone has been recruited since nobody got iced. I'm pretty sure other games don't normally/ever give them that advantage.

viscousmemories
07-27-2006, 07:03 AM
For whom do you think it's an advantage and how so? I couldn't actually find any documentation of this variant anywhere...

Joshua Adams
07-27-2006, 07:13 AM
For whom do you think it's an advantage and how so? I couldn't actually find any documentation of this variant anywhere...I think it's an advantage for the town, because then they know that someone has turned mafia. In other words, their suspicions will be alerted and they'll be looking hard for signs of a change in behavior.

It also doesn't make much sense for the mafia to reveal themselves that way. Perhaps if there were only one mobster alive then s/he couldn't do both actions at once.

viscousmemories
07-27-2006, 07:27 AM
I'm still not seeing a real advantage there. Everybody's going to be looking as hard as they can for changes in everyone else's behavior as it is, trying to figure out who's who. Plus how do you mean the mafia would reveal themselves? Obviously the recruitment will go on privately...

Maybe I'm just too tired. I have to crash but I'll modify the procedure tomorrow if people think it's necessary.

Joshua Adams
07-27-2006, 07:36 AM
Plus how do you mean the mafia would reveal themselves? Obviously the recruitment will go on privately...I meant, reveal their action of recruiting someone. There's 3 of them, so you can imagine that one would recruit and 2 would kill (just like in the case where an evil character can get blocked, a kill still takes place).

It's not that big of a deal.

Edit: I forgot to consider the Doctor. In the one-in-a-gazillion chance that he succeeds in protecting a target, there's no mob kill, so there's still an element of uncertainty...

slimshady2357
07-27-2006, 12:35 PM
I think the town could USE that advantage. It seems to me that the mafia being able to recruit someone each night is a HUGE advantage. As they recruit they will have more and more numbers, be more and more in control of the lynching votes.

The town is going to need every little advantage possible.

Joshua Adams
07-27-2006, 12:37 PM
The mafia can only recruit one time.

It would actually be literally impossible for the town to win if the mafia could recruit every night, if you think about it. (ed: well, I suppose if the Vigilante picked off a mobster AND the lynch was correct everytime, the town would win, but other than that.)

Whew! :phew:

I thought the way I read it was more than a little unfair to us townies! :D

Still, I agree with vm, I don't think it's an advantage to the town that is significant enough to worry about. It's quite an advantage for the mafia to get that chance to recruit in the first place!

Cf: previous page I agree that the mafia has to trade the kill for the recruitment. It provides townies with crucial info, considering they have nearly squat to start with, but it also ratches the tension tighter, which makes it more challenging for everyone. It's all about the tension.

I'm going invisible for the remainder of the game so people don't wonder why I'm not more active when I'm able to make these sporadic appearances (and because I know I'm being watched. :narrow: )

Oh, and dammit vm, you're supposed to devise your schedule so it's convenient for me. I won't have much time to play tomorrow, so I may have to phone in a couple votes, so to speak. 400 N in Atlanta is a special kind of nightmare. I timed it today. It took me 35 minutes to go 3 exits. Now, we're not talking about exits that are miles and miles apart. The furthest distance between exits is probably about 2 miles. Sooo...it's about a 5 mile journey from onramp to offramp.

Damn, we lost the doctor? (Oh, yeah -- sorry for your loss, Legs. And Widget.)

How much does that change things, this early? It can't be as bad as losing the cop.Since the doctor usually doesn't know the role of who he's protecting, or who the mob is targeting, it's highly unlikely he is ever useful except for one thing. If the cop outs himself, generally the doc should protect him to get one more investigation because obviously the cop is going to die next. After the cop's dead the doctor is probably no more useful than anyone else (and stands a chance of being detrimental, if he accidentally protects the mafia from the vigilante).

viscousmemories
07-29-2006, 04:26 AM
Pretty much anything can happen. A lot of the dynamics are controlled by the game master (in this case, me.) So yes, in the game I'm running at least if the vigilante and the mob asked to have the same player killed, all you'd see is a dead player in the morning. It wouldn't be obvious who did it.

Spenser
07-29-2006, 05:29 AM
That's the hard part, in WW the wolves would eat their victims and the lunatic would stuff them in the town bell or something so we knew. This changes a lot.

Crumb
07-29-2006, 05:33 AM
Is this not how the vigilante is supposed to be played?

Joshua Adams
07-29-2006, 05:41 AM
Is this not how the vigilante is supposed to be played? There's no right way to play. But it means the mafia have the advantage in figuring out who the vigilante is, since they know who the victim was (assuming that's useful at all, but there you go).

I was wondering what happens if the mafia recruit the cop/doc/vigilante. Do they keep their special powers or just become a standard mafia? I don't even want to think about having an evil vigilante on our hands...

Crumb
07-29-2006, 05:42 AM
No the vigilante would be a mafia then and not a vigilante. That's how it was explained earlier, anyway.

beyelzu
07-29-2006, 05:44 AM
i think spenser is just pointing out that the game is different from what hes used to. ultimately all game decisions are subject to the design of the gm, and ww and mafia are both games that have lots of variation as far as i can tell.

Spenser
07-29-2006, 05:47 AM
I am not saying anything is wrong, it is always up to the GM, it is just that this format is going to be more difficult for us because we are given less info. Plus I didn't think there would be much to go on until we had a lot less players and if the vigilante is gone that is going to take a while.

beyelzu
07-29-2006, 05:50 AM
why do you think the vigilante is gone? do you think he was recruited? or she to be fair.

No the vigilante would be a mafia then and not a vigilante. That's how it was explained earlier, anyway.Do you happen to have a link (or know where this was said)? If it's too much trouble we can just wait for vm to come along tomorrow.

Spenser
07-29-2006, 05:56 AM
This whole thing reinforces my belief that the vigilante would kill newer players and the experienced ones are still around because the mob was busy stealing a townie. IOW Jacey was a mob hit.

beyelzu

viscousmemories
07-29-2006, 07:23 AM
There's kind of a parallel discussion in the game thread, so I don't think it's a problem.

I spent hours yesterday reading about Mafia strategy, rules, ethics, moderating etc. at various related websites, and the key thing I learned is because there are a brazilian variable configurations and approaches to the game, a lot of decisions have to be made on the fly by the GM. As Joshua alluded to earlier, there is no "right way" to play - no set of rules that dictates roles and play management.

Basically my responsibility as the GM is to strive for a balanced game, processing actions and divulging information as I see fit in an effort to give both sides a fair shot at winning. Hence my recent post on the game thread about the order in which I processed the actions. I'm not sure that's something a GM would ordinarily share, but under the circumstances it seemed like essential information for a balanced game.

I don't expect to do this perfectly (or even well, necessarily) my first time out of the gate, but I'm having a blast doing it and I'm trying really hard to do it well and fair. In fact I'm having a lot more fun GM'ing than I did playing, so I'm looking forward to running more games and building my own standards in the process as long as people stay interested in playing.

Man, I loved those when I was a kid. Especially the Time Machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Machine_%28book_series%29) rip-off series.

OK, is that a joke I don't get, or has levius actually made two spelling mistakes in the last 48 hours? Pieces of my shattered worldview are raining down around me as I speak. :hide:

It's a typo, not a spelling error. Believe it or not, I haven't had any difficulty remembering how to spell 'future' in about 25 years. Besides, I make typos all the time. If you're just realizing that now, it's probably about time your reality shattered around you. :patpat:

Sorry, I'm only comfortable in a world where I make the typos and everyone else is perfect.

Okay, I need some input on how to do the running vote tallies I post periodically. As Spenser mentioned, the way the GM's at IIDB do it takes the following format:

Player X - Player Y

Totals:
Player Y - 1

Which reads as:

Player X [voted for] Player Y

Totals:
Player Y [ has one vote against him/her]

For no particular reason I've been posting the tallies as:

Player X - # Player Y, Player Z

Which reads as:

Player X [has # votes against, cast by Player Y, Player Z]

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. For example in the former, it's easier to find an answer to the question "Who did Player X vote for?" but in the latter it's easier to find an answer to "Who all voted for Player X?" Both make it fairly easy to determine how many votes a given player has against them, although the total at the bottom is more prominent.

Another consideration is the fact that gathering, reading and interpreting data is a large part of the challenge in this game, so I'm not sure how much help a GM should provide in this effort. For example, should I be reporting unvotes and/or sorting the tallies by the order in which votes were cast, or should I just report the raw data in alphabetical order (as I have been) and leave the burden of gathering minutae and analysing it on the players?

For the sake of continuity I'll probably keep doing it as I have been for the rest of this game, but I'd like to hear any ideas you all have. If someone comes up with an obviously superior method I might adopt it sooner.

I think you should just post the raw data and leave the organization and interpretation up to the players. It's their job to figure out who's which and that means organizing and analyzing the data. Make them bleed, sweat, and suffer in order to win the game.

Also the work of interpreting the data forces the players to go back and look over the previous posts again. So that's a good thing, otherwise some people might get too lazy if a complete data format was presented to them all the time.

I was thinking maybe you should just out all of the mafia in the OP, for the next game.

Oh that's a given.

I like being able to see who all voted for player x, but I'm finding it difficult to parse in the early stages when it's just one or two votes per person accused.

How about some formatting changes to lend visual distinction? Just using one of your recent tallies as an example, I'm thinking something like this:

Current votes to lynch (8 required):

Julie - 0
Legs - 0
Adam - 0
trillian - 0
Smilin - 2: beyelzu, Legs
minus - 0
livius drusus - 0
TomJoe - 0
balluga - 1: Smilin

You could also use a three column html table. Nothing like lines and labels to lend visual distinction. :giggle:

The tally is just for keeping up with whose neck is currently in the noose, and how close we are to nightfall. There's no need to have detailed information beyond what everyone's latest vote is, and the number each person has against them.

Things like a complete voting history and the order and shit are up to players to keep track of.

Oh and I prefer the "IIDB" style but it doesn't matter since I keep my own records.
