This is from an email by a pro-Israeli Christian evangelical. She posits that God allows archaelogical discoveries to arrive to focus attention on His plans in current events.

I think God does work via current events and coincidences. Here is her take on the content of Psalm 83... a fact unnoticed by mainstream media.

The Internet is buzzing with news of the amazing find in Ireland of a manuscript dating back to 800 - 1000 AD opened to Psalms 83. This passage talks about Israel's neighbors wishing to wipe out the very memory of her existence. It is being called a "miracle find" and one archaeologist says, "It's unlikely that something this fragile could survive buried in a bog at all, and then for it to be unearthed and spotted before it was destroyed is incalculably more amazing."
Right now Israel's enemies are again united in their desire and intention to "cut Israel off from being a nation" as the passage indicates. Foolish talk of cease-fires and a two-state solution would be abandoned if people only believed the words of the Bible and their application for today.

The nations in Psalm 83 are a confederacy and I again say that I do not believe the current conflict is Psalm 83 as several Arab nations are not in favor of the activity of Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran. Could the war escalate? Yes, and then the scenario would be different as the Arab nations would stick together.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947 just as the modern state of Israel was being formed. Is God again speaking to us through His Word and are we listening?

I have had the flash point Psalm 83 and two other flash points on my Web site here http://www.olivetreeviews.org/topics/israel.shtml for months, not knowing the Psalm 83 flash point production would become nearly headline news.

LionsDen, I appreciate your posts here, because no site should ever get too one-sided. But, that goes for us as indiviuals too, and I think you've fallen into that trap. You make these posts like this, and never take any other point of view seriously. You believe what you want to believe and to hell with everything else. I grew up surrounded by people like that, and believe me, it will come to bite you in the ass.

Come on, read what you've posted with objective eyes. It only makes sense if you don't let yourself believe anything else.

Why can't "God" speak for himself/herself/itself is my question?

I can google and find just as many articles that would suggest that Santa Clause was "speaking to us" through his activities....

Hmm. It's not entirely clear (to me) what the object is. Here is a quote from Yahoo and CNN's story:

The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.

Is this actually a manuscript of the book of Psalms, or a commentary, or something else?

Joshua. Here's (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5216320.stm) the story from the BBC.

It's just amazing that the pages were found when the bog was being bulldozed and that some of the writing is still legible.

It's on RTE's news website as well, oddly enough. (With video reports: RTE is very, very good about streaming all its bulletins)

The book is a Psalmster, basically a collection of Psalms. The fact that it was found open at Psalm 83 shortly after the Israeli attacks into Lebanon began (Over a week ago now) has been touted around some of the more conservative/religious boards as a Sign of the Righteousness of the Israeli position in the current conflict.

Is this actually a manuscript of the book of Psalms, or a commentary, or something else?

It was the Psalm itself. I've heard it described as a lament to God about neighbouring countries attempting to destroy Israel.

1 A song; a psalm of Asaph.
2 God, do not be silent; God, be not still and unmoved!
3 See how your enemies rage; your foes proudly raise their heads.
4 They conspire against your people, plot against those you protect.
5 They say, "Come, let us wipe out their nation; let Israel's name be mentioned no more!"
6 They scheme with one mind, in league against you:
7 The tents of Ishmael and Edom, the people of Moab and Hagar,
8 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre.
9 Assyria, too, in league with them gives aid to the descendants of Lot. Selah
10 Deal with them as with Midian; as with Sisera and Jabin at the torrent Kishon,
11 Those destroyed at Endor, who became dung for the ground.
12 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
13 Who made a plan together, "Let us seize the pastures of God."
14 My God, turn them into withered grass, into chaff flying before the wind.
15 As a fire raging through a forest, a flame setting mountains ablaze,
16 Pursue them with your tempest; terrify them with your storm.
17 Cover their faces with shame, till they pay you homage, LORD.
18 Let them be dismayed and shamed forever; let them perish in disgrace.
19 Show them you alone are the LORD, the Most High over all the earth.

One analysis"
The community lament complains to God of the nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel (Psalm 83:1-8). The psalmist sees all Israel's enemies throughout its history united in a conspiracy (Psalm 83:2-8). May God destroy the current crop of enemies as the enemies of old were destroyed (Psalm 83:9-12), and may they be pursued until they acknowledge the name of Israel's God (Psalm 83:13-18).

I wonder why the Psalm talks about the Galactic Empire? (Line 11)

LionsDen, I hate to pop your Balloon, but, the manuscript found was actually opened on the old Latin translation of the Bible known at the Vulgate, which numbers the Psalms differently from the later King James version.

It was actually opened on what is now Psalm 84.

if this is true, what this find re-affirms for me is my notion that the bible was written by people to show there particular nation in the best light possible and discard all other nations not in there favor.

This statement “Israel's neighbors wishing to wipe out the very memory of her existence” also tell me that jealousy and prejudices was alive back then. Think about it. Everything done good in the bible is by man or by certain nations.
