If you haven't noticed, a new craze has taken the :ff: by storm: The game of Mafia.

Mafia is a role-playing game. As with a lot of games, playing is fundamentally simple but the strategy can be complex. If you're new to role-playing games, think of it like a theatrical play. The Game Master (GM) is like the producer/director. He creates the set and setting, randomly assigns roles to the actors, then directs the action.

A game from start to finish might look like this:

1. People sign up to play
2. Someone volunteers to be the Game Master (GM)
3. The GM determines the which roles the game will have
4. The GM randomly assigns the roles to players
5. The GM posts an opening scene
6. The townies vote to lynch a mafia suspect
7. When a majority of townies (50% +1) have voted for a particular player, "Nightfall" is declared and gameplay stops
8. The GM writes a lynching scene starring the town's chosen victim
9. The people with special roles submit their night actions to the GM
10. The GM process the night actions
11. The GM writes a scene that incorporates the night actions
12. Gameplay resumes
13. Repeat steps 6-12 until the mafia or townies are eradicated
14. Game over!

If you want to get a feel for how it works we've already played three full games here that you can read through. They are here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9084), here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9206) and here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9414). I'd also encourage you to browse through the MafiaScum wiki (http://www.mafiascum.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/HomePage) and forum (http://www.mafiascum.net/forum/) for more documentation and discussions about/examples of gameplay (respectively). You might also want to look through the 5 or 6 games they've played in the IIDB games subforum (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=103) (registration required).

There are typically three threads associated with a Mafia game. The sign-up thread (where people announce their desire to play), the Game Thread (the official thread - for players only), and the Peanut Gallery thread (for any :ff: members to comment on the ongoing game).

So the next time you see a mafia sign-up thread, give it a shot! :mafioso:

Alternatively, if you have no interest in playing or watching people play Mafia you can always select Thread Tools -> Ignore this thread from the top of any Mafia related thread, and it will disappear. If you decide you want to view it later, you can always restore it from your user options.

Current tally

Mafia 3 : Town 1

Can we stickify this thread, vm? It's a good intro, and handy to have all the links in one place.

We have an aversion to stickies. And by we I mean me. :shudder:

So... Are we about to get a new MAFIA thread?

I'd say you could call it PINKO...or REDS.

Aw, c'mon. Some of the best things in life are sticky.

/me wholeheartedly agrees with Sock Puppet.

Aw, c'mon. Some of the best things in life are sticky.

I'm tempted to put that in the quote generator.

Do it, Minus! Do it! :innocent:

/me runs for the quote generator.

I vaguely recall an enticing proposition for the next Mafia game to be set in Deadwood. I am already imagining lining up with either Swearegen or Hearst.

BTW, good write up vm.

I heard that too, wei yau. Unfortunately I don't know if our best GM is a Deadwood fan.

I think the top post should also be used to keep a tally of who has won:

Currently it's

Mafia 2 : Town 0

These game threads do sound interesting. I might consider signing up for one after reading up on them.

Cool, I'll sign up for the next game! =D I'm very familiar with the game, too. My drama club used to play it when we were bored.

sweet, signup for three just happened. it starts on tuesday. but of course we will be running another one.

Mafia 3 : Town 0

We keep losing it's almost depressing. We're like battered housewives who keep returning no matter how many times we get smacked around. :sadcheer:

Found this good guide

In the spirit of the excelent Deadwood game we just finished, let me be the first to say:

Scum 3 - Town 1

08-31-2006, 04:25 PM
So Adam doesn't this make you the winningest :ff: Mafia player?

08-31-2006, 04:36 PM
i think he is with 3 victories.

i have two victories, one as evil and one as good.

I would not say that. The town got the victory. He was dead when it won.

09-08-2006, 05:23 PM
You win if your team wins, MonCap, whether you are dead or alive.

09-08-2006, 06:25 PM
yep its all about team victory. mafiosos typically jump on the grenade to help there team win. for the town it is no different.

it doesnt matter if you live or die as long as your side wins.

complete agreement with crumbles on this one.

Why are there no mafia games at FF anymore? I just played in my first game over at RnR and it was awesome. I want more games!

Because it was a fad.

You can try to revive it if you want. The last attempt failed, but who knows?

Personally I wouldn't try it right before the holidays.

:yeahthat: I bet you could drum up some interest in the new year, though. I was considering trying to get another Deadwood game together.

12-09-2007, 04:56 AM
I was thinking that after the holidays I would try to goad someone into running one. :) I'm in! :yup:

Deadwood could be fun, or bey could give the Gilligan's Island theme a second shot.

It still seems to be very popular at RnR. As soon as one game finishes, another starts.

Yeah, go on Liv. You know you wanna. Of course I don't know anything about Deadwood. Is that the one with the timelord type dude that's set in Wales?:D

12-09-2007, 05:00 AM
:nope: Nope, gold rush boom town in the old west.

Although Ian McShane could easily pass for a Welsh timelord type dude. :giggle:

im not over it, i lurvs mafia

04-16-2008, 02:53 AM
Is mafia dead now, or would there be enough interest to start another one up? I'll GM it if you want.

04-16-2008, 03:29 AM
I'd be interested.

04-16-2008, 08:00 PM
I am still bummed about being on the one losing mafia team.
