View Full Version : Where's Waldo?
ceptimus

I started up a thread with these rules on another forum nearly three years ago, and it's still going, though that forum is very low traffic nowadays. I thought I'd give the same idea a try here.
Rules:-
0. If you're a newbie to this thread, ignore the rules and start playing (go to the end of the thread). Playing is (hopefully) fun. These rules suck.
1. Ask questions. The 'Answerer' can only answer yes or no. Your object is to guess Waldo's location.
2. First person to correctly identify Waldo's location posts the next 'Where's Waldo' puzzle (becoming the new 'Answerer').
3. Each poster to the thread can post as many questions as they like, as often as they like, but...
4. Only one 'alphabet' question will be answered per poster per day. By an alphabet question I mean something like, 'The name of the country Waldo is in, does it start with a letter in the alphabet before M?' This same rule goes for latitude and longitude questions too (though you can usually disguise these questions by using placenames - and that's ok).
5. Each poster can make one formal guess per day. They need to make it clear that it is their guess - something like, 'OK I'm guessing Waldo is on top of the Eiffel Tower'.
6. Even if their guess is wrong, a poster can still ask other questions on the same day - but of course, they may just be helping their opponents by doing so.
7. What constitutes the start and end of a day, and how often the questions are answered is at the discretion of the current Answerer.
8. If the Answerer is absent for more than 36 hours without making excuses first, anyone can jump in and be the new Answerer.
OK. Here goes with round one:
Waldo is outdoors, looking at a sculpture.

Nope, Waldo isn't in Europe.
You can ask lists of questions if you like - maybe something like:
Is Waldo in the northern hemisphere?
Is he in Spain?
The artist that made the sculpture - is (s)he still alive?
Is the sculpture made of metal?
or rock?
or marzipan?
... and so on. :)

Hmmm. :chin: I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to these art classifications.
...but I have an escape! :P I'm only supposed to answer yes or no, so perhaps you could restate your question something like, 'Was the sculpture made in the twentieth century?'
In my opinion, the sculpture is in a modern style, but like I said, I'm clueless when it comes to art...

Waldo wasn't wearing his hat at the moment you asked your question - he'd taken it off while he was photographing the sculpture.
Waldo has a large collection of hats, so obviously he has left some of them at home.

No.
Okay, time for another summary:
Waldo is looking at a sculpture, outdoors, in a public place, somewhere in New York state, but not close to the sea. The sculpture is less than 30 feet tall, is made largely of bronze and appears to be in a fairly modern style. It's of some kind of ape creature but there doesn't appear to be any kind of plaque or other information attached or nearby (as far as ceptimus can see).

do not obsess upon the informational plaque. If you knew what was on it, it would pinpoint the location, but unless you've actually been there and read it, you won't know what's on it, and if you did, you wouldn't be quite sure why godfry has brought Waldo here. It is not necessary for you to read the sign...
It's a viewpoint. A viewpoint installed by the park staff with touristy information on a signboard. The view is panoramic.

This is correct.
The best time to be here is mid-October, when the hardwood forest changes colours. From the viewpoint one can look up the Aspy River valley, formed as a rift valley by the Aspy Fault (which is what the sign is all about), including the most northerly reaches of the original Arcadian forest. The forest is almost all hardwood inland and the panoramic view from the site which explains the geological history of the area is absolutely gorgeous in the color change of autumn. Riotous reds, oranges and yellows cover thousands of square miles within view. It's a natural wonder.
For those who are fans of Celtic music, Cape Breton becomes the host to the world of Celtic musicians with the annual Keltic Kolours Festival in October. Some of the best fiddle music I've ever heard was on Cape Breton Island.
