View Full Version : Anyone interested in playing poker?

I mentioned this in chat last night, and some people seemed interested.
The way it works in a forum, is that someone has to volunteer to be the dealer (unfortunately that person then has to do a lot of work, and can't play in the game). The dealer PMs the hand dealt to each player, and then keeps track of the cards and how much money has been won or lost.
Several games have been held over at skepticalcommunity.com over the past two years. The threads seem very popular. Though I haven't taken part, at least one member here, slimshady2357, has.
Here is a link to one of the 'how it works' threads there: linky (http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1938) There are lots of other threads and games in that forum - search around to find more.
If there's enough interest, we'll copy their format and have a main 'table' thread where the actual play takes place, and a parallel thread for comments, joshing and badinage.
It's also an opportunity to add another class of 'smiley' to the :ff: Here are a few of the cards linked from over at skepticalcommunity.com
http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/Ah.gif http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/2h.gif http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/Jh.gif http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/Qh.gif http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/Kh.gif
I think if we're going to try this, we should keep the first table fairly small; say a maximum of ten people. If you're interested, sign up in this thread: the first player puts 1. username, and so on until the ten places have all been taken.
I'll volunteer to be the dealer for the first game, though if anyone else would like to do it, that's fine with me.

Oh yay! I think this is a great idea. I'll give the cards their own category and get busy uploading. :poker:
Warning: I have a poker disability (can't remember the order of hands), but with the intarweb to help me, I might just not bug the shit out of you.

Depending on the day, time and duration, I would be willing to play. I love a good game of poker!

Depending on the day, time and duration, I would be willing to play. I love a good game of poker! It's likely to take a few days, Godwhacker, maybe even a few weeks if the game gets protracted. But you'll only have to pop in once a day or so to keep up, and if you've decided in advance that you want to fold or call, etc., when your turn comes then you can PM the dealer who will do that for you.
And, yes it will be texas holdem.

How does it handle a table of more than seven?
Even at seven, draw games are problematic. A second deck? Or, a specific card-limit on the game (i.e., Texas hold'em, three-card low-ball, etc.)?

godfry, in holdem there is five community cards and every player is delt two hole cards at the beginning. so youcould easily play with 8-10 people.

The deck o' cards is up, in a category towards the bottom of the list. Notice the jack of diamonds and king of spades have a slightly different smileytext convention. That's on account of :jd: and :ks:.

Cool. Thanks for signing up and thanks to liv for providing us with a pack of cards.
I have to go out tonight, and I'm off to work early tomorrow. I may be able to set up the rules and deal the cards tonight, but more likely it will be tomorrow night. Please bear with me...
You won't need a PayPal account, at least not for this first game. We will be playing with :ff: money, like we do in Legs' horse racing games, and I will provide everyone with a stack of chips to start!
Once we have everything running smoothly, and a couple of successful games under our belts, I suppose we could run a game using real money and PayPal. That's for the future though.

:ff: money, eh? Do you have any idea what the chip values will be? I'm thinking mebbe I could throw together a chipset to use along with the cards.

Ahh... Claro. Keeping me buttered up is always a good plan. :hellyes: I'm not entirely satisfied with the cards, mind you, but I can't deny the usefulness of them.
Smilin, this first game is 10 players.

A how-to poker site has ones like this http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:xOv9DrdE3B5RvM:http://www.pokerlistings.com/images/deck/card1-11.gif but they are probably under copyright or something. They are very nice.

I would most definitely be interested, Crumbles. I have feelers out at dA for a custom set too, but so far nothing's come through.
Scarlatz, it looks like you have competition on the hustle front.

Hey...hey...hey...
Could we have this thread separated at post #41 to start a new thread. I'm not quite sure which is the official thread...this one or the "comments" one.
Sorry, Ceptimus...I'm just trying for a little bit more clarity. Otherwise, a good start.
