This thread is for people to post suggestions, comments, questions etc. concerning the first :ff: poker game, which is happening in this game thread (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9394).
Please don't post anything in the game thread other than bets or other information vital to the game - we want to keep that thread uncluttered so that people can follow the play easily.

Sheesh, I haven't even got any cards yet!
One thing that some people forget is that they can "check" sometimes and don't need to fold.
If there is no bet to you yet, you can "check" rather than fold. It means you aren't betting, but you aren't folding.
For instance, after the flop, the person nearest to the dealer (who is still in) must act first. Since they are acting first, there is no bet to them (no one in front of them has made a bet yet. Even if you hand absolutely SUCKS, it's better to "check" here than fold. Everyone else's hands may suck too and it's possible no one will bet. Then you'll get to see some more cards and your hand may improve.
So before you fold, make sure that there has been someone betting in front of you (but do remember that the big blind is exactly the same as a bet, you must at least call it).

So, is this to be where bets and calls are made, or in the "Anybody..." thread. Will the flop be shown here or there?

Bets, calls, and the flop will be in the "Anybody..." thread. No one should post anything else there (except for me - I'll post the current state of people's finances etc.)
This thread is for everything else to do with the game.

I'm happy to go along with godfry's suggestion and split the 'Anybody...' thread at post 41 (and remove godfry's suggestion post). I did consider starting a new thread called 'Poker game 1 table' but then I thought everyone would know where to find it...
Anyway, maybe it would be cleaner to have the game separated from the signing up and discussion part of that thread, so if an admin want's to take the trouble to split the thread, I'm cool with that.
If :ff: poker becomes popular, I suppose there will be other games, possibly more than one at the same time - that's why I put the 'game 1' part in this thread title.

Forum poker is like that. Other forum games such as chess also operate slower than when the players are together in the same room. I think it's part of the charm of the format. It's understandable that everyone is a little impatient right now - what with the game being new - but in a few weeks time, it will just become part of your :ff: experience. Each day when you browse the forum, you'll check out the poker thread and maybe make a bet...

24 hours is the normal time limit. I don't know if we should allow longer at weekends - what do you think?
If you have decided on a strategy in advance, you can PM me (or a non-player you trust) to act on your behalf - e.g. "call unless the pot goes over 30, in which case fold."
You can also appoint a friend to play your hands for you, if you know you're going to be absent for a few days.

ceptimus, are the figures in parentheses each player's remaining chips? Because everyone that called livius's bet of 8 should have 12 chips. For example, bey bet 4, and vm called. After livius raised the bet to 8, and vm called again, vm would have added 4 chips of his own to the pot at that point, because he already had 4 chips in.
By my reckoning the pot is 52 chips (six bets of 8 plus bey's original bet of 4).
Leesifer
08-09-2006, 09:33 PM
Well I'm correct at 11 chips because I was the "soft blind". Yes?
Crumb
08-09-2006, 09:35 PM
No lees you still only have 8 in. Everyone who hasn't folded has put 8 into the pot. Shouldn't the size of the pot be listed in the little summary too?

No harm done this time - I'll go fix it.
D. Scarlatti
08-09-2006, 09:38 PM
Nope, when you call, you're just matching the previous largest bet. If you bet 4, and someone raises it to 8, you need to put in 4 to "call" the 8. But if you fold after someone raises, then any money you put in previously stays in the pot.
This is how we take beyelzu's money.

its not testicles to fold a marginal hand when its 5 way action with a big bet.
beyelzu
08-10-2006, 05:10 PM
if someone goes all in and you cant cover the bet, you just go in with the total amount of that you have. if someone else also calls the all in and has more than the first person a sidepot is formed between the two players with the most chips.

08-10-2006, 05:21 PM
Leesifer, livius's' "all in" is essentially a bet of 12 :ff:lorins, so you can call.
I've played games with blind betting, but the bets went around the table. I've never seen this little wrinkle where the first two players to the dealer's right are forced to make blind bets but nobody else is. But since this is the first hand, it doesn't make any difference. Everyone has the same amount of chips to bet with.

Huh? I thought it was just to make sure that everybody didn't check during the first round of betting. It could also have the effect of getting a bunch of people to fold. In Vegas, you often get three cards for free, at the seven-card stud tables.
slimshady2357
08-10-2006, 05:43 PM
You can call ANY bet. Even if you have less chips than the person betting.
Example:
I have 1000 chips.
Lees has 50 chips.
I go all-in and only Lees is left in the hand (other than me).
She can call my bet of 1000, but what happens is:
She puts her 50 into the pot and all of my 1000 is returned less the amount that Lees had (50).
so the pot would go up by 50+50 = 100 and I would get 950 chips returned to me.
Example 2: (only three people in the pot)
I have 1000 chips
Lees has 50 chips
vm has 500 chips
I go all-in. Lees calls. vm calls.
So I have bet 1000, lees calls with her 50 and vm calls with his 500, what happens to the pot?
first, lees' 50, 50 from me and 50 from vm go into the "main pot". This is because, since she can only put 50 into teh pot, Lees is only allowed to win 50 from each of vm and me (she shouldn't get my whole 1000 while only risking 50!). Any of us can win this pot.
Next, vm's remaining 450 and 450 from me go into the "side pot". ONLY vm and me can win this pot, so at showdown, which ever of us has the better hand wins this pot, regardless of Lees' hand.
Finally, 500 chips of my 1000 are returned to me, since no one could match it.
so no matter how few chips you have, you can always call. No one is ever priced out of a pot.
Make sense?

Help me out here guys. I've only checked in quickly this morning, as I have to leave for work now (I'm working in a strawberry field - there is no internet connection available there).
From my quick look, I think that liv and Lees are both 'all in' and that everyone else has folded. If that's correct, I assume there's no point in having any more rounds of betting (as all liv and Lees can do now is check) so I might as well jump straight to the show, and declare who won the pot. Then we'll move on to Lees' deal.
I don't want to rush it and spoil things, so I'll wait till I get back home and read any comments/advice here before I act. Sorry guys, this won't be till about 12 hours from now.

08-11-2006, 04:51 PM
That's what I'm saying. And you both paid to see at least one of them. I would say you paid to see them both. You're entitled to make your entire hand out of the five card board, without using your hole cards, that was the assumption going into the game. So I would say the dealer needs to lay out the last two cards. You guys are both going to have to check, that's all.

Contact: PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT - 800-671-1776
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 9, 2006
School District Reverses Policy Banning Religious Literature
Charlottesville, VA - Following intervention by Liberty Counsel, students in the Albemarle County Public Schools will now be able to distribute information announcing Bible clubs, church activities and other after-school religious events.
Last week, twins Gabriel and Joshua Rakoski requested permission from their teacher at Hollymead Elementary to distribute flyers announcing a church-sponsored Vacation Bible School scheduled to begin on August 7th. Their teacher refused permission and required the twins to put the flyers back in their book bags. Their father, Ray Rakoski, contacted the school and was referred to the District's literature policy, which prohibits "distribution of literature that is for partisan, sectarian, religious or political purposes."
Mr. Rakoski contacted Liberty Counsel for assistance. Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter informing the District that its literature distribution policy was unconstitutional. The District could not ban the Bible club flyers while allowing other announcements about after-school events, such as Boy Scout meetings or karate classes. The District responded by reversing its religious literature ban.
The District's policy was in direct conflict with the United States Supreme Court precedent requiring schools grant equal access to facilities and provide equal treatment to religious organizations as is provided to secular organizations. The District violated well-established constitutional principles by prohibiting the Rakoski twins from distributing fliers about their church-sponsored event.
Anita Staver, President of Liberty Counsel, stated, "We are pleased the Albemarle County Public Schools will now allow students to distribute literature with religious viewpoints. We are especially pleased with the prompt resolution of the matter by the school district. The First Amendment extends to the distribution of religious literature and students do not shed their constitutional right to free speech when they enter the school."

vm cannot be at -2, he should be at 0.
Since vm can only put 12 into the main pot, then he can only win back 12 from each other player in the pot. Therefore the main pot = 48.
But bey bet 14 in total, so he, godfry and lees have put another 2 each into the side pot, which only they can win. The side pot = 6
The total of the two pots still equals 54, but vm can only win the main pot. The rest can win either or both pots.I know that. My notation of -2 is just my way of keeping track of the bets in a simpler way. If anyone other than vm wins the pot, then they win 54, and vm is out. If vm should happen to win, I'll refund 2 :ff:lorins to all those who were still in at this stage, and give the remainder of the pot to vm.
ETA: I suppose it might get rather complex, though, with different players going all-in at different stages of the betting, possibly after some people have folded, so I'll adopt your notation in future.

Hey, you're running the game you can play it any way you want I suppose.
But bey went all-in, to just refund him the last 2 when other people have called it (Lees and godfry) is very strange indeed. Certainly I've never seen anything like it before. Those last 6 :ff:lorins have been risked by the various players, someone should win them, even if vm has the best hand of all.

I think you're the favorite right now Lees, even though I have the best hand as it stands.
You've got loads of 'outs' (cards that will win the hand for you):
Any club (8 of them)
Any 10 (2 of them (3 actually, but the 10 of clubs has already been counted in the club outs)
Any 8 (3 of them)
Any 7 makes a straight (3 of them, again the 4th is counted in the club outs)
That means you have 16 outs with 2 cards to come, I think that puts you at about 71% to win. It's actually a little less than that, because if you caught a non-club 10 or any of the eights left, I could still win if a non-club Ace came up also....
I'd estimate you at about 69% right now. Not looking good for slim.... :sigh:
