Well, I don't know how well this game will go over, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I'll explain how I came to make this thread, first. The guy I work with was trying to balance his check book (which is beyond me, how a check book could get out of balance to begin with), and he's freaking out and all, and finally announces, "My wife spent 1000.00 dollars!!! On nothing!!!" Then he started listing the things she'd bought. Some were downright obscure.
So, with that thought in mind, I thought it might be interesting if we kept a tab of the things we purchase until we hit $1000.00.
The only rules are:
1. Maximum of 5 items per post. (you can post more than once, of course)
2. No 'big items'. (i.e., a stereo for 800.00 would kill the thread pretty quickly)
3. Add your total to the post before yours. (that's right, gotta do some math)
4. This is optional, but you can say why you bought the item(s)
Ok, I will start it off.
Today, I bought a cup of coffee and an apple fritter at Dunkin Donuts on the way to work.

I usually take one of my cordless handsets and prop it on the wall of my above ground pool while I'm swimming. Sometimes I make weekend-chat-type calls while floating around. I've never dropped the phone in the pool, but since one of my cordless phones has been pissing me off lately and I decided to replace it, I figured I'd buy this one so that I have it for pool use.

I blew right past the $1000 mark several times over with one check I wrote yesterday, $2492.00 for a new Trane airconditioner, the outdoor part. Our old one crapped out on a 99 degree day last Thursday. Thanks to the extra foot of fiberglas insulation I had blown in several years back it never got above 86 degrees in the house. And, unfortunately, due to it not getting below 82 degrees overnight, it never got below 83 degrees. Thankfully, my next door neighbor, who runs a HVAC company, was able to get one in right away and a couple of guys to install it. We had air conditioning by 4:00 PM Friday, an hour before I went to work. This one, even though larger in BTU capacity, is supposed to be quite a bit more efficient than our old one.

Now, an exercise for the truly curious:
How much of that was taxes, and how much money in taxes did we have to pay to earn the $1k, approximately? :)

The hard way to figure this out is to try to add up all the individual taxes.
It would probably even make died in the wool socialists sick to know the total amount. My off the cuff guess is at least 75%
- sales tax, personal property tax, personal income tax, VAT taxes, social security, medicare, medicaid, the effect on prices from the same taxes at the retail, wholesale, manufacturing, and raw material stages, etc.
I fully expect someone to counter this with their story of how they expect a tax refund this year.

We have yet to see if it will reach its full $3.99 entertainment value. If/when it does, I'll try to get a photo to illustrate.
However, today it is the Unspeakably Evil Thing to be hissed at and contact avoided at all costs.
That's a good sign because in a few days when Flutter has had a chance to complete her reconnaissance, she will vanquish the nasty beast. I'm hoping she'll go at it like the wood thrashing, bone crunching maniac that she is.Ha! Took only 5 months, but this morning that thingie finally got the birdie beating it deserves (sorry 'bout the sucky cellphone photo, but it was handy.):

Hat, baseball, black sueded cotton, with some kind of silver heavy metal-looking logo on the front with flames saying, "Wicked Quick" in Gothic letters below the legend "Revolucion de Fuerza," whatever that means. The sides of the cap read, respectively, "Quaker State Racing" and "2003 NHRA Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon."
