Roman game at FF!

Alrighty then, this is the thread for both the sign up for the Roman game and a place to offer suggestions as to the era in which to hold it. Right now I'm thinking of the middle of Claudius' reign. But it's most certainly not set in stone.

The rules are based on werewolf but slightly different.

1. The game will be timed, the exact amount of time in the day is negotiable, the night phases will also be timed, day break will happen at the same time each day, with a long day over the weekend.

2. PMs are allowed in this game.

3. You won't get to know which roles are in this game.

4. You will however learn people's roles upon their death.

However, could I suggest that you wait until the Deadwood game is winding down or finished?

I know there are definitely people playing Deadwood who would want to play Rome-style but it might be a bit much to have them both running at once.

Claudius' reign sounds good. Caligula's reign is appropriate for the Mafia/WW mood, too: everybody on edge, trying to avoid standing out and being subject to Caesar's random whims.

That is part of the fun. If you dont know what roles are in the game, or even what they are called, you can bluff much more effectively in PMs. It is just another dynamic that makes the game interesting. Also, by not know which roles are present it makes it much more difficult to come out with your role, like a cop with no doc. Also, it makes roleclaiming much more interesting and harder to difuse. Think of it as another level for the game to mess with you.

All of the power roles will be traditional ones with only slight variations possible. What you own't know will be which roles are in the game, and what their flavor is. Obviously this benefits the mafia, but it's made up for in both the role revealing and in the actual roles themselves.

I'd have to agree. It's also miles less fun, imo, because picturing the roles and their interaction in a themed game is a big part of the excitement.

I gather you're just here for the game, but if you're interested in the rest of the forum there's a series of introductory pages (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/ffintro.php?do=ffintro) outlining who started this place and what it's about. Probably the two biggest systemic differences between the :ff: and IIDB are that we exist to support general discussion, not defend/advocate atheism, and the discussions here are virtually unmoderated. There's some overlap in the membership but the cultural differences are many, imo. Anyway we're always glad to see new faces.

I don't know anything about being a Roman either. I know Roman numerals ok, and some stuff I learned from watching Gladiator, but that's about it.

I don't think it matters too much though. It's just a game.

I don't know how it will go with not knowing actual roles...but I'm certainly interested in finding out.

and everyone, lets give it a shot, having played both ww and mafia, i can say that ww is alot of fun, its different fun, but it is great. a public face and and a private face or faces. its a fucking blast.

jashe outed as seer in the werewolf me and crumb played, she said that both of us were evil and we still got her lynched. that is something that cant be done in mafia. it makes arguments and trust and intergroup dynamics so much more interesting.

There appears to be some confusion over this part. So in bold: There will be no role in this game of which you will be unaware/know nothing about What you won't know is exactly how many of each role (if any) are in the game. For example, you won't know if there's a vigilante (until it's revealed someway in the game). Now this ignorance does hurt the town, but it's offset by both the revealing of roles upon death, the use of PMs, and the fact that the balance in power roles will be titlted towards the town.

we could elect a consul instead of a mayor, that would be cool.

if we go republic the badguys could be roman slaves, which is like a roman nightmare, escaped slaves passing themselves off as citizens or even patricians that have turned away from their class.

Assuming we get tewlve people, I'm considering a closed setup in which everyone (including the mafia) has some sort of special role. I'm finishing up a game like that on mafiascum and it was pretty fun. PMs will be allowed, and I'm thinking a time setup similar to the deadwood game.
