Anyone else watch this Discovery channel show? Think Snopes meets Jackass. It demonstrates critical thinking and the scientific method, without boring or turning off those that NEED to learn critical thinking the most.

I was very impressed with their Escape From Alcatraz segment. I have read books and watched various shows with various theories on the chances that the escapees lived or died...these guys studied the escape, duplicated the raincoat raft and paddles, studied the Bay currents, waited for similar conditions then tried it. They made it to the SF shore in under an hour. Of course, it's not possible to tell if the real escapees made it, but the Mythbusters proved it could be done.

Mythbusters is one of my favorite programs right now. Now, that is reality TV.

The only I've seen was one about cellphones, I think. Or was it batteries? Okay, I don't remember exactly, but I know I found it fascinating. I'll make a point of seeking out.

Let's see...

There was the exploding toilet, the JATO Chevrolet, peeing on an electric fence, sugar in the gas tank, the vacuum toilet, Lawn Chair Larry balloon ride, ice bullets, the chicken cannon, the killer washing machine, the .22 bullet in the fuse holder, and more fun and frivolity. Very entertaining.

I also like mythbusters. I watch it whenever Ihappen to see it on.

I liked the one about cellphones starting fires at gas pumps. I enjoyed it because state law requires gas stations to put signs on the pumps warning of the dangers of the cellplhone.

ice bullets,
That episode made me sad, I had always wanted to make an ice bullet and shoot someone with it and then I found out that it couldnt be done using a regular gun. :(

Perhaps with an air gun or a CO2 cannon?

well sure there is still some hope, but making a ice bullet fired out of a normal gun would have been so much easier.

:deepsigh:

but thanks for trying to cheer me up, warren :D

That's the same thing I was thinking during the show. But they did have something on that show about liquid bullets. Those do work. Good show though.

I've seen a ton of MythBusters. I think my favorite is the chicken cannon.

In my opinion, their approach is good, solid science. The point of the experiments is disproof. This is an often overlooked aspect of science -- experiments are designed to disprove hypothesis.

That and the fact that stuff always blows up on that show and I'm hooked.

I've seen that show too, though I haven't managed to catch it on purpose yet. Great to see some rationality on television.

My favorite so far was the one on drunkenness and how to pass a breath test. Did they calmly explain how none of these should ever work? No. They drank until they were blind stinking drunk, and with the aid of police, tested all these mythical ways to pass a breath test. None of 'em worked. We need more science like that, hands on and, er, bottoms up :giggle:

I'm in love with Kari Byron (http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/meet/meet_02_03.html). I'd leave Rachael Ray for her.

It cracks me up when they try to read their scripts. They just can't act, and the whole thing sounds cheesy.

But then something explodes, and their reactions are great.

I think I've seen all the episodes. One of my favorite programs on TV right now. Sometimes their experiments have been flawed, but when people write in and point that out they are happy to revisit the same myths with improved experiments.

I just saw one about folks using a slingshot to get across the Mexico-US border. Supposedly, it was flinging people 200 yards onto a bed mattress. They were barely able to get 200 feet, nevermind 200 yards.
