I was coming out of Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Assembly of God Church of Christ of Latter Day Saint Andrew's Holy Hope Congregationalist Temple yesterday morning and encountered angry protesters from Kansas carrying signs saying "GOD HATES FAGS", "HOMOS ARE GOING TO HELL" and such. They were shouting "Your god lies to you.", "You're going to hell for accepting homosexuals." and "Homos want to have sex with your children.".

I was taken aback. The church was being protested for allowing openly gay people to be members. I looked down at my tattered, dog-eared copy of King James New American Slang Version Holy Bible, then at the protesters and felt my anger rising. So, I asked the nearest protester, "Are you Christians?" She claimed they were the only true Christians. Struck by the truth in her words, I threw my perverted translation of the bible to the ground and stomped on it, then raised my arms to the sky, pleading to God, "Why did you lie to me? Why did you lie? I thought you were about love." I've been so misled. I felt great shame.

So, today, I join my new brothers and sisters in Christ protesting at Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. There might be fags and homos there. The Right Righteous Tom Coburn was probably talking about Charles Page High School when he talked of lesbians having sex in the bathrooms. They must be shown the errors of their ways. Only angry shouting and vile protest signs will have any influence at all. Amen, brother. Hallelujah. Glory be to Dog.

You wonder, I wander, from truth occasionally to satirize a true and sad story.

Protesters plan to picket five area churches. (http://www.fox23.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=8A90C304-168E-4CA7-8BF4-81C03C48307A)

What I don't understand is if sinners are destined for hell, why bother protesting? Is it that they don't trust their god to actually dispense ultimate justice in the afterlife so they feel they must persecute "the wicked" in this life?

Why are you depicting churchgoers as easily persuaded by Phelps to join him? What evidence is this satire based upon? What proportion of all churchgoers do you think approve of Phelps methods enough to join in his activism?

I think you are being overly defensive.

I viewed the op as being satire about the absurdity of the phelps position. I took it as implying that their tactics obviously wont work to persuade anyone.

What churchgoers are you refering to? I am the only churchgoer mentioned in my piece that joined in. Do not make this into more than it is.

What proportion support Phelps methods? Quite a few around here, what with all the hate-spewing I hear on a regular basis, but percentage, I do not know, it's probably low.

Excellent choice of words, since he's probably a deranged closet case.

I thought he had cancer? I had promised myself expensive new shoes and an evening of dancing when he finally kicked off. Dammit.

a search of phelps and cancer found this for me

Our Lord was never found picketing outside the funeral of a sinner. Jesus didn’t cast the first stone at the woman caught in adultery, though he had ever right to do so. He chose to love the least, the last and the lost of society. Those of us who profess Jesus as Lord are called to follow His example.

it was in an editorial in a paper and written by a minister. I am always happy to see xians actually oppose fucktards like phelps. It gives me faith in humanity.

HelenDon't worry about it. I actually think I owe you and anyone else offended by my silly piece an apology. I didn't even think it would be construed as an attack on anyone except the Phelps-types and they deserve it, but more reasonable people do not.

The only comments I've heard IRL from Christians about Phelps are disapproving.

(Online one never knows if people who express extreme opinions such as supporting Phelps are trolling or are genuinely supportive of his methods. My experience is that the most extreme 'Christians' online often turn out to be non-Christian trolls mimicking/satirising their view of Christians for their own amusement)

While I've only overheard a few people expressing support for Phelps. IRL, I am casually acquainted with a number of self-identified Christians that spew the same sort of venomous things about gays and lesbians that his group does, one a rabidly homophobic coworker, a guy with religious stuff decorating his cubical. I cringe when I hear that stuff, but since, as an atheist, I am in the minority here in Oklahoma, I am not quite as confrontational as the Phelps and his congregation. I just want to get along, but they're making it hard.

It just seems to me that often fellow xians arent vocal enough against dipshits like phelps. Maybe, I am just being overly critical though, I do have a bias after all.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're implying that you consider Christians obliged to vocally oppose that with which they disagree.

I don't consider that to be an obligation. I don't have a problem with other Christians largely refraining from comment on Phelps. It would only concern me if they were vocally supporting him.

Furthermore, I find it emotionally draining listening to people who spend a significant amount of their time vocally opposing concepts or people. I prefer being around people who have a more positive orientation.

But Phelps claims to be speaking for you and your God. Doesn't that bother you?

If there were an atheist individual or group preaching hatred and intolerance in the name of atheism I'd like to think I'd spend a little time saying "hey, that idiot doesn't speak for all of us!"

Just out of interest, does this group cleave to the King James version of the Holy Bible? I mean, how can they, when the sponsor of the translation was himself of dubious sexual inclination...most likely AC/DC.

Heh...

I didn't know he claimed to speak for me. Can you show me where he does that?

Anyway, assuming he does, then if/when I encounter people who think he speaks for me I'll address it. But until then, why spend my time on it?

If there were an atheist individual or group preaching hatred and intolerance in the name of atheism I'd like to think I'd spend a little time saying "hey, that idiot doesn't speak for all of us!"

If you were a Christian you might find that attempting to do that left you no time to do anything else and then you might decide you needed to cut back on vocally opposing all the Christians who don't speak for you.

The television report on the church protests on Sunday had interviews with several churchgoers and a minister, all of whom pretty much labeled Phelps' bunch as crazies, and the minister said something about loving your neighor and such. That was good to see and hear.

Too bad a protester protesting the prosters protesting the protesters that were protesting the protesters beaned me on the head with a plywood GOD HATES FAGS sign, requiring a trip to the ER in an ambulance, which oddly enough had a pair of dykes (http://www.dotcalmvillage.net/nowwhatzine4jan03/zinegraphicsfall/wirecutters.jpg) inside.

I was wrong. He claims to be speaking for Christ. Here's what he has to say about other Christians:

Most 'Christians' today are Christians by name only, and should be ashamed of themselves. They are cowardly, lukewarm, and ashamed of Christ's Word. They have substituted their own pathetic ideas for God's clear commandments... Don't listen to the money-grubbing heretic who stands at the front of your church. Listen to God.

...Churches...like the Southern Baptists and Assembly of God churches are as much to blame as the out of the closet fag churches...Why? Because they have created an atmosphere in this world where people believe the lie that God loves everybody. This soul-damning lie is the reason that fags are so out-spoken today.

Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catholic, Northern and Southern Baptist, Church of Christ, Assembly of God, etc. have all departed from God. Most well-known preachers (Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, etc.) have departed from God, and disassociated themselves with pure Gospel preaching.

Like the Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, et al., the so-called Christian Church-Disciples of Christ (generally, Congregational Churches) are sodomite churches. They are not true churches of Jesus Christ.

I got these from the Anti-Defamation League (http://www.adl.org/special_reports/wbc/wbc_on_christians.asp) website because my employer won't let me browse www.godhatesfags.com at work.
