Robert Nesta Marley, OM (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981), better known as Bob Marley, was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is the most widely known performer of reggae music, and is famous for having popularized the genre outside Jamaica. A faithful Rastafari, Marley is regarded by many as a prophet of the religion, as well as one of the greatest songwriters of all time.Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s.Cannabis (marihuana) is a genus of flowering plant that includes one or more species. The plant is believed to have originated in the mountainous regions just north-west of the Himalayas in India, though it could also have come from Northern Africa. It is also known as hemp, although this term usually refers to varieties of cannabis cultivated for non-drug use. As a drug it usually comes in the form of dried flowers (marijuana), resin (hashish), or various extracts collectively referred to as hash oil.

I think pot is more of a gateway drug because once a person starts smoking pot they start getting exposed to more drugs. This doesn't mean that they'll take them but it does open the door.

Alcohol is a gateway too but on a lesser extent. Social drinking, mostly at parties, increase the chances for exposure to pot, seems more so now than when I was a kid.

Remember the sage words of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: Smoking pot and drinking beer together is like pissing into the wind.

Never heard the FFFB. They sound like a jam band. I don't really care for jam bands. I don't really care for potheads either. I don't wish them ill-will, I just don't like being around them.

Alcohol is a gateway drug more than marijuanna. There is a lot more types of use of alcohol than "social drinking, mostly at parties". Granted, people who smoke weed are exposed to black market drug pipelines because of pot's illegality but when it is measured just on the experience versus alcohol alone it's a much less a driver of wreckless behavior that takes people into hard drugs. People mix booze and benzo to get ranquilized, booze and speed, amphetimines and or cocaine to allow them to drink more. People also develop benzodiazapine habits like valium and Xanax because those pills simarly depress the central nervous system only without the mileage alcohol puts on the body. Alcoholics also often resort to opiates to medicate the hangover--vicodin, percocet, oxy and develop physical dependencies.

Potheads are not using a central nervous system depressant--they are using a halucuinogen. Halucinogens do not merely dull the senses as dose alcohol.

Go into a narcotics anonymous meeting one night, look around and look at the condition of the people. Then go to an alcoholics anonymous meeting another night and take a look at the people. Alcoholics exhibit much more outward decline than most addicts--except perhaps the hard core meth head.

Oh I agree alcohol is a horrible thing when abused. But drinking isn't such a direct link to the drug underground as pot. Thats the main reason I would be in favor of legalizing pot. I think making it legal could create some distance between it and harder drugs. I'm sure teenagers would still get it and try it but atleast they would be less likely to someone who might offer them harder drugs.

Your argument would be completely moot if marijuana were legal. It is the illegality that brings one in contact with the so-called drug underground. It's just an herb, man, a far-out herb.

Umm.... did you read all of my post.
A.) Pot is a gateway drug because it brings people in contact with the drug trade.
B.) My main reason for supporting the legalization of pot is to keep A from happening.

Still and yet, even if pot were legal I would still hate potheads.

Re the OP:

I know I am extremely fond of Bob Marley's rocksteady stuff from the '60s.
I know I think all extant copies of "Legend" should be confiscated from their owners by the Enforcers of Popular Music Law and hidden somewhere secret and safe, until such time as every goddamn song on that compilation ceases to be a horrendous cliche.
I know that if someone is white and a Bob Marley fan, it's a good guess that they will annoy the crap out of me.
I know I hate pot. Hate it. It makes me dumb and crazy and depressed and paranoid.
I know I dearly wish I liked pot, because it is cheap and plentiful, everybody has it, my friends who smoke and enjoy it always seem like they're having a good time, and it is considerably less dangerous than alcohol, which is my anesthetic of choice.
I know that pot should be legal.
I know that stoner humor isn't funny.
I know that, paradoxically, I really like hashish, but nobody in this stupid country seems to have it, and when I smoke it I just go right to sleep anyway.

I believe studies show if there are any "gateway" drugs at all Tobacco and Alcohol are the top gateway drugs and are the most used by minors.
This is assuming you believe the gateway drug theory even though there is no evidence that suggests the use of a specific drug will make someone more likely to use more dangerous or "harder" drugs in the future.
