David Bowie appreciation thread

Inspired by Chuck and Scarlatti depriving ITSOZ of hard won abuse by spamming his spam thread with Bowie, a Bowie appreciation thread.

Anyone who doesn't love at least one Bowie track is ignorant or deaf. Fact.

I had a friend that said she thought Bowie was wierd and his music was strange and unappealing. Then she found out some of her favourite tracks were actually by Bowie. That's the way Bowie is. If you think you can put him in a box, you're wrong. Sometimes his willingness to experiment and write songs, as he told one interviewer, "fridge-magnet" style has produced work of questionable quality, but damn, he's made so much fine music.

Here's some of my (many) favourites:

Absolute Beginners
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VCL7kkn7MJQ&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VCL7kkn7MJQ&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Under Pressure (with Queen)
(May Vanilla Ice burn in hell for sampling this in a "song" not fit to lick the dirt from the original's tracks)
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UdaHCLlBkWU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UdaHCLlBkWU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Heroes
(Brings back fond memories of watching "Christiana F" in a run down art cinema at the sleazy end of town as a teenager)
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NEVNoYFpLps&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NEVNoYFpLps&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

You had me in a state of fear and confusion until the Google told me Bowie produced, wrote, played and even sang for the album. Can't say I've heard any other track from it apart from the title track that was used in Trainspotting, which is very nice.

AKA "The Royal Carribean Theme Song."

Being a dirty furriner, maybe haven't seen these:

I have only an amateur's knowledge of Bowie's pretty huge output. I didn't get into it beyond Space Oddity until after watching The Life Aquatic. Imma get on iTunes.

I'm way too dirty and foreign to have heard that before.

Love those drums.

I think my favorite Bowie albums are Scary Monsters, Heroes, and Let's Dance, plus a whole shitload of individual tracks from all over the place, from The Man Who Sold The World to Sound + Vision to Never Let Me Down.

I don't know how you couldn't like David Bowie either.

Love those drums.

Aye. That whole record is great. You must have heard The Passenger somewhere along the way.

(Live [with Bowie, it says] - audio only.)

Yeah but only heard that version recently for the first time. I used to think it was a Souixie and the Banshees original. Fucking awsome.

Posted, I must admit, mainly because these are the two Bowie tracks I can reasonably render with a guitar and a bit of wine in me. And of course, Life on Mars is just lovely.

I've only ever owned one Bowie album.

It was Black Tie White Noise.

Do I pass the cool test? Do I? Huh? Huh?

Have you read Bukowski? Do you use "ennui" in casual conversation? Can you name any Jim Jarmouche movies?

Most of Bowie's great stuff is from the 1970s IMO. In the 1980s it all went downhill.

Who knew it was so hard to find anything decent on youtube?

I don't like him as much as I did when I was a kid*, but I really kind of like this version of The Man Who Sold the World:

* That's not a burn or anything. I liked him some stupid amount when I was a kid.
