Re: Philolsophy

I believe that paradox requires another premise or two to be a paradox.

(Let's call the barber Bob)

Bob shaves only people who don't shave themselves.

But this simply means he would not be "allowed" to shave himself. But there's nothing contradictory if he simply wears a beard or sees a different barber, as nothing in the premise implies he must shave himself. It could still be the case that every person Bob shaves is someone who never shaves themself.

It could be stated as "Does the barber who shaves all the people who don't shave themselves, and no others, shave himself?"

Or a little more explicitly, "Does the barber who shaves all the people who don't shave themselves, and no others, and nobody goes without shaving, shave himself?"

To which the appropriate reply is, of course, that such a barber cannot exist.

He shaves exactly those people who don't shave themselves. That's Russell's paradox.

The tides are caused primarily by the moon and to a lesser extent the sun, however, so that does not contradict Kamilah's graph. (Yes, the sun is a star, but the graph says "stars", plural. Only one star affects people's lives in any meaningful way.)

In any case, I live within a few miles of the Gulf of Mexico and the tides have little to no effect on my daily life. To be fair, they will when half of this state is underwater, which seems likely to happen sooner rather than later at the pace things are going.

Without the ability to see the stars, navigation would've been far more difficult.

They don't matter so much now that we have GPS and things like that, but without the stars most naval exploration would've been set back significantly.

I was thinking about this because of Moana.
