Pyeong-Chang-a-Long - Winter Olympics 2018

I'm not particularly following this little get together, but interesting things keep cropping up. And we need more threads anyway.

This guy is indomitable.

'Nothing's impossible': Tonga’s lone skier strikes out for Olympic glory in South Korea | World news | The Guardian

He was at Rio 2016, noted for appearing in the opening ceremony in oil instead of a shirt, and then wanted a new challenge.

Cross-country skiing.

He hadn't even seen snow at that point. I mean, Tonga. He's qualified, and is there now.

This might be more significant in the long run but I am less impressed - I suspect it's all for show:

Winter Olympics ceremony sees landmark handshake | South Korea News | Al Jazeera

Quote:

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, who landed at the Incheon airport of Friday, was seen shaking hands with South Korean President Moon Jae-in during the opening ceremony.

In a rare show of unity, athletes from South and North Korea will march together under a "unification flag".

This isn't new news, but it's still noteworthy

And, still Norway, I just came across this:

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics: Norway team ends with egg on its face - This is why | Hindustan Times

Quote:

After taking receipt of 15,000 eggs instead of the 1,500 they wanted, Norway’s team at this month’s Pyeongchang Winter Olympics may have a pretty limited menu.

The Netherlands is laughing at Katie Couric' commentary on NBC on why the Dutch are so good at speed skating.

Jos Duijvestein 🇳🇱 on Twitter: "You just can't make this up.

NBC opening ceremony coverage. Katie Couric talks about why The Netherlands is so good at speed skating as The Netherlands enters the stadium.

And this folks is why Americans are less bright about the rest of the world as they spread fake news!… https://t.co/mIj9o7TVLn"
