Codenames: Duet

Welcome to Codenames: Duet!

A kindler, gentler version of Codenames where we are all on the same team. :yup:

Codenames: Duet Rules Summary
  • All players are working together to identify 15 agents (green) before time runs out.
  • Players are split into two groups each of which will see a separate solution grid (via PM) but they both refer to the same word grid.
  • Each group's grid will have 9 green spaces, 13 neutral spaces and 3 assassin spaces. The grids coorespond to another based on this graphic:
    http://pro.bols.netdna-cdn.com/wp-co...p-card-key.jpg
  • Note that one assassin on each grid overlaps with one of the green spaces on the other grid. It IS OK to guess a space that is an assassin on your group's grid, what matters when you are gussing is what is on the other group's grid.
  • The two groups will take turns giving a clue word + number of words. NOTE: In Codenames: Duet there are NO multi-word clues, no acronyms, no homynyms, no spelling/rhyming or positional clues.
  • Then the other team will then have AS MANY GUESSES as they want, as long as they always guess green. They must take their guesses one at a time.
  • Both the clue giving group and the guessing group can confer via PM before a guess or clue is posted. Do not communicate privately about the game with someone from the other group.
  • When the guessing group passes or hits a neutral space a time token is used and the groups switch roles.
  • If the assassin is guessed the whole world loses.
  • The game is over when the 15 agents are found or the 9 time tokens are gone, or the assassin is guessed.

Here are the randomly determined groups:

Group AGroup B
LimoncelloKael
erimirMegatron
MonCapitan2002ceptimus

I will send each group their private grids in PM. You can begin discussing your clues privately with your group as soon as you receive the grid. Here is the public word grid:
Codenames: Duet - Agents: 15; Time: 9
ApathyEurekaCartographyThunderKing
CookStickSingerTriangleMistake
ThiefPointMothBroomBackbone
BaseballGirlDawnEarPlumber
ObservatoryLawnZamboniFranceHurt

Please read through the rules summary and post any questions you have here. Any questions about the private grid, should be asked in PM.

Good Luck!

Group A should post the first clue.

Re: Codenames: Duet

How will words be displayed on the main grid... will there be any distinguishing words that were guessed and were neutral for Team A vs. those that were neutral for Team B? Will there be a difference if a word is guessed by both teams and is neutral on both grids?

Crumb 11-13-2017 07:22 PM

Re: Codenames: Duet

I was going to mention that once a neutral was revealed. I will add an indicator for the neutral words indicating for which group they are neutral. If they are guessed and neutral for both groups they will be indicated as usual for guessed neutral words.

Since this isn't a competitive game, it would seem that there wouldn't be much of an issue of having someone jump in after starting... they don't have access to the answers.

As an aside.

Sent my team a PM, I'll post a guess in the morning if I haven't heard from them by then.

Sorry about the late reply guys. I was at work and really couldn't comfortably log on to the site to confer with you. Sorry. I feel bad that I didn't get a chance to provide any imput in time for the first word. :(

Re: Codenames: Duet

Crumb, assuming we make a correct guess are we then supposed to reveal to the other team what colour that word was on our own grid? Would this help the other team in any way and, if so, is it allowed in the rules?

I'm assuming after an incorrect guess the rules definitely don't allow us to reveal the colour on our grid - that method could be used to tell the other team our green and black words - if it's a green one then they could guess it next time even without the aid of a clue.

Sorry for my confusion, I'm still trying to get my head around this new variation of the game.

Re: Codenames: Duet

No, only information from the clue givers grid will be given out after a guess. Once a word is revealed as green for either group, it is done and need not be guessed again by any group. So if you guess a word on the other group's grid that is green on your grid, you no longer should give clues for that word. Only neutral words will remain in play for the other team.

Re: Codenames: Duet

I think I understand that Crumb, but for example:

Say the word "Channel" was in the grid and we guessed it now for the clue 'Discovery' and it was right. We now know that it was either a green or black word for the other team. Obviously no one on either team is going to guess "Channel" again.

But my question is whether or not either or both teams (the clue givers or guessing team) are allowed to say, "That was one of our green words" (or gray or black as appropriate)? I just wondered:

A) Do the rules allow that? I'm thinking in the non-forum version of the game are the cards turned over so that everyone can see them or similar?
B) Even if the rules do allow it, does it actually provide the other team with any useful information?

Crumb 11-15-2017 05:27 PM

Re: Codenames: Duet

It could provide useful information. No, the other team does not get this information.

Re: Codenames: Duet

I don't see anything to gain here by trying to stretch this past the 3 answers that fit the clue, especially since this is a co-op game and we're not competing.

Let's just pass here, and start giving our own clues.

Crumb 11-15-2017 08:48 PM

Re: Codenames: Duet

Yeah, I guess the pass is implied if you choose to post a new clue anyway. :yup: So you are free to post a clue. :pleased:
