Brexit EU referendum polling stations.

It's referendum day today in the UK. We are voting on whether to remain part of the European Union or leave it.

The Guardian has run a nice photo montage of some of the more quirky places that have been set up as polling stations where people go to cast their votes.

I have a postal vote that I sent in a couple of weeks ago so I didn't need to go to my local station - which is a fairly boring one in a local school.

Some of those are hilarious, like the one in someone's living room.

We applied for postal votes but were lazy and didn't do it in time for them to arrive before I went to Canada. Sou didn't feel comfortable faking my signature :giggle: Luckily I was returning today, so I was able to hand my postal vote in at the polling station.

18 hours of solid travelling and I was up for more than 30 hours, but I got it in!

:vote:

As usual John Oliver has a nice piece on the brexit situation Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Brexit (HBO) - YouTube

Some people are having trouble getting back home to their polling stations due to transport chaos in London. A little bit of rain and democracy is washed out!

It's entirely mutual, btw. The nagging about the EU while paying less and getting more than everyone else is getting really old. I am very tempted to say don't let the door hit you on the way out.*
Still the EU needs the UK too, if only because of the domino effect it would have.

* the Scots and the Welsh can stay though

I have no idea what to think. I did hear one tidbit that said the actual outlay is something like 2% of the budget, so a bit of a tempest in a teapot. I don't know if that is reflective of reality or not though.

I can't wait to see this blow up in their face!

I hope it doesn't, solely for the fact that a)it'll blow up in everyone's faces, b)so many friends and family already perilously close to broke as it is, and c)I WAS hoping to emigrate in the next 5 or so years.

Chances are that it will blow up in their faces, though. What a mess.

Oh yeah I don't actually want it to blow up, but that seems to be the only way xenophobia learns is to have their short shortsightedness destroy everything.

Problem is that those responsible will always find ways to shift the blame.

Looking for the article I read earlier but several footballers in The UK won't be able to stay, they don't meet the minimum requirements for the visas they suddenly need to obtain.

Optimal not-totally-unrealistic fantasy scenario:

-market crash + onerous terms of exit scares the bejeesus out of them
-new election is called, Conservatives + UKIP fucked up so much that Labour wins (helped partly by Conservative/UKIP chaos and vote splitting)
-election of new gov't is seen as a referendum on the referendum
-UK looks foolish, but decides to stay

It needs to blow up a bit, not for the benefit of the UK(t)* but to make voters in other EU countries think twice about doing the same. Which lots of them are now going to do.

* Whatever of the UK is left at time t

But either way,

-idiot voters full of hatred still hate the government and the "experts" and the darkies, and the establishment politicians still have no fucking clue

Re: Brexit EU referendum polling stations.

So far Brexit has resulted in a historic crash of the pound.
Way to go Britain, us Americans were getting annoyed at how expensive it was to visit your castles and eat your boiled food!

Also this seems like something that should take more than a simple majority to enact.

Whatever nonsense happens to the UK, it's almost worth it for the stream of Riker Googling on the twitters.

Re: Brexit EU referendum polling stations.

Looks like Sinn Feinn is jumping on this too: most of Northern Ireland wanted to stay in the EU, so why not just join the republic?

Scottish independence campaigners are also declaring this is grounds for re-examining the secession issue.

So the question is now: do we consider Wales old enough to decide which parent they want to live with?

JoeP 06-24-2016 11:32 AM

Re: Brexit EU referendum polling stations.

Wales voted overall to leave, but with a similar pattern to England: cities voted to remain. So there's no drive for Welsh independence from England (at least not from this alone).

On the other hand there is now a movement for London to declare independence from England.
