Venture Brothers

The first season was largely hilarious. The second season was hit and miss (with an emphasis on "miss"). After the first show of the third season I say- woe. How lame.

About half-way through I thought maybe it was a one hour special- but no- it was the regular 23 minutes. Pointless info-dumping, and self-conscious attempts at pop-culture references.

Are you serious? I found it hilarious! When Dr. Girlfriend was all, "Wait. Was that henchman the Monarch?" I actually shot diet coke out my nose.

What I still don't understand, after two viewings, is:

It was just not amusing.

Oh come on. When he promises to make 24 his number 2? Given that we know it's never going to happen. Come on! Okay, maybe I was a little enhanced.

Re: Venture Brothers

That part was funny. I am not saying it was entirely without mirth- but that it was rather long-winded and forced for the most part especially in contrast to the way season one was fast-paced and comparatively high-brow in its low-browedness. It (season one) did not seem to care if the jokes were gotten or not- the jokes were there because they belonged there. It flowed.

Then we had season two with the debacle of the wedding and the exceptionally forced lines such as "I know when to go out" which required a false-feeling set-up. And now we have a running gag
which is more like a limping gag and which was almost funny the first time, but the humour of which is eliminated by the faux-casual patter surrounding it.

It was predictable in its construction and offered no twists to make up for it.

Dr. Girlfriend

I didn't hate it but it wasn't 1/3 as funny as anything from season 1. I will, of course, continue watching however.

Oh I'll give you that it had absolutely nothing on the Season 2 premiere (you must watch it with the commentary if you haven't yet), but then what does? I like how they did the opening title sequence with the Monarch's crew instead of Hank and Dean. It was a nice detail.

Damnit, you guys! I keep forgetting to watch the newest ep! Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Venture Brothers

It's on too late for me to care so I've been catching it on Adult Swim's website.

Hooray for streaming content! (And! Fewer commercials!) :cheer:

Re: Venture Brothers

Yay for that, but also you can watch it on the website as early as Friday. Two days before it comes on tv. :w00t:

(not that it matters when you totally forget to watch)

Re: Venture Brothers

Soooo..... If it's so darned good, why do you keep forgetting to watch?

Re: Venture Brothers

I don't have cable or the internets at my home. The only way I can watch television is if someone downloads it for me and burns it onto a disk. I feel like a fucking caveman.

I got caught up on eps 3 and 4 this weekend, but of course 5 had to air on Sunday, so I'm still an episode behind. I'm loving it, though. I love how Dr. Girlfriend managed to keep her smoking a secret from the Monarch all this time. Also, Sgt. Hatred is fucking hilarious as always.

I watched it last night at work (:shh:), and it was definitely hilarious. I loved the "relationship" between the two bodyguards.

I still haven't seen this season's ep 5, but my understanding is it's not as good as the last one.

Okay, I guess there's no accounting for taste. I thought that boy adventurer daycamp shit was hilarious! It reminded me a lot of the tag sale episode. Outdoors on the venture compound, during the day, ensemble cast ... hilarity ensues. I especially loved how they cloned the dead kid.

Um, but what was the deal with the, "Are you sure he's my real dad?"!!! I'm thinking Brock, but I've also read speculation that it could be Johnny.

Re: Venture Brothers

My speculation is that Rusty has "real" children. Yeah, I know, horrible thought, right? People are making mad guesses as to who the mother is.

Re: Venture Brothers

I'm trying to figure out if there's something more to Quymn's bodyguard. Specifically if she's a reference to something or someone else. Dr. Quymn was at least partially analogous to Lara Croft and her daughters Nancy and Drew are self explanatory. What about Ginni? (Aside from the fact that she's a masculinized woman.)

This is the first episode this season that had me laughing a few more times than the others. Don't get me wrong, I love The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch but this show is about ... god, who the hell knows?

Re: Venture Brothers

The Lepidopterists was seriously hilarious. I couldn't get enough of the giant robot with the ice-cream cone arm. And I love it when 21 and 24 get their own story line. :giggles:

Re: Venture Brothers

I never figured out if there was more to Doctor Qymn (other than qymn is (yet another) an English pejorative for a woman's hoohaa). :sadcheer:

And if that's all I have to be :sadcheer: about, what a wonderful world this is, yeah?

Nobody see Now Museum, Now You Don't? Another pretty funny episode from this pretty funny season. (Nothing in my mind can approach season 1. Nothing.)

What Goes Down Must Come Up was just creepy as hell. Meaning, I loved it to pieces. Dr. Venture (the senior) was a bastard coated bastard. All's well that blows up in a shit rocket that explodes well, though.

First off, it continues the bubble bursting of the "perfect" son, Jonas Venture Jr. He seems like a money grubbing, self important butt wipe than a mutant cum industry tycoon. But still, he's more successful than Rusty.

The Lepidopterists. That is all. It's new and it's funny. Only on the Venture Brothers would you find people talking about a death ray like this:

"Wow, if that were a woman, I'd marry it."
"And I'd jeopardize our friendship by nailing your hot wife."

If you aren't watching this episode now you are dead. You have no heart. Your brain was removed. Or Kevin and Tim-tom have stabbed you. Stabbed you with their knives.

Oh, and this is the best place on the net for your VB fix, aptly named at that.
