Oh...I quite agree. I presume my comment about Ulysses was noted.

I had a Lit major friend who described Joyce as the "source of shit that supplies the flies of literature known as Lit graduate students....it's so impenetrable it supports the pretensions of massive numbers of clueless blowhards."

Even though I could finish neither Ulysses nor Portrait..., I agreed.

Sock, you have my most heartfelt sympathies. I hope you are getting therapy. You are obviously getting on with your life, which is good. I had the great misfortune of having had a lover who was reading Proust, in French, for her French class. That is, until the good professor was tried and convicted of bombing a recruiting station. She, the Proust reader, is evidently now a Presbyterian divine....

But Proust is not English literature. Which has its own sins to answer for, not Proust. I'm looking at Joyce here.
