Default Re: Juno's Arrival

Juno has had some problems and close calls, but is still online and functioning. It went into Safe Mode on Oct 18 2016, missing its second close pass, fortunately Safe Mode did its job of spotting a computer malfunction and returning control to NASA.

A bigger problem is the ongoing engine valve issue... It carries helium to pressurize propellants, and the valves for that are reacting sluggishly. It's unclear whether the engines will work as expected. Rather than risk losing control, they've put off the period-reduction burn and let the spacecraft continue in its slower orbit for now.

Passes 3 and 4 were completed without incident and all eyes open (nearly - pass 3 missed one due to a software update).

So Juno is still performing its function of looking deeper than Jupiter's outer layer. Keep your fingers crossed. Pass 5 should happen March 27th.
