Re: Does the Graffiti in Your Neighborhood Look Like This?
One of the major graffitti centers for Australia is Melbourne. It's kind of like the San Fransisco of the Australian graffitti scene. There's a shit load of excellent stuff down there.
Banksy's stuff is great. There's a lot of sticker artists in Brisbane who have been inspired by him and I like looking at their stuff around the alleyways of my city.
I also used to love watching the graffitti on the morning train to work. Then the fucking council went and painted over it. It was really beautiful stuff too. There's still some great works around the CBD but it made me really sad when they reduced the gorgeous art to a buff gray/green.
There was a phenomenon here in Perth a while back where some kids had picked up on Wandjina Koori legends and were stencilling Wandjina motifs everywhere over Perth. It was awesome. Then some stupid elder fucks started wanking about how only "speshul" Indigenous people are allowed to paint the Wandjina and some of the kids got busted. I swear, religious pontification and patriarchal power-games transcend race, class and religious cult boundaries.
