I'm sorry, that really sucks. It was one of my concerns coming into my local chapter (really any organization); and a thing to watch for and correct. I don't claim to have a total knowledge of our chapter but so far what I've gotten involved in has been pretty welcoming of all, with lots of ages, genders, orientations in the mix as well as leadership positions.
