Americans shouldn't be satisfied with shortening the pronunciation of just one element, "Aloominum": this shows a lack of ambition on their part. Why not work through the whole periodic table? For the ones before Aluminium, they will struggle to shorten Boron, Carbon, Fluorine, and Neon, but most are ripe for abbreviation:
Hydgen, Heelum, Lithum, Bereelum, Nitegen, Oxgen, Sodum, Magnum, ...
I'm sure you get the idea. Think of the time savings when discussing Neodymium magnets.
