I've witnessed that dynamic a few other ways as well from pathological abusers:

She leaves him and he flails between:
* NEVER CALL ME AGAIN, even though she is definitely not calling him
and
* "The door is always open." Great theatrics there to paint himself as the victim but still so full of forgiveness.
