There's a medical expenses deduction in the IRC, but it's pretty goddamn lame. For most people it only kicks in if 10% or more of their adjusted gross income goes to unreimbursed medical expenses.
As long as we're taking half-measures approaches to heath care rather than doing what actually needs to be done - and clearly, that's all we're ever gonna see in this here country - I'd favor shitcanning the current
deduction entirely and replacing it with a 100% tax
credit under which every penny spent on unreimbursed medical expenses reduces income tax liability by the same amount.
