I did have some thoughts about the possibility of impeachment though.

First is... if Trump is impeached during the current Congress, he almost certainly will be convicted. This is in spite of it requiring 67 votes in the Senate. Trump needs some ace up his sleeve to prevent it. Why is that?

1. The GOP leadership probably needs to be on board for impeachment to happen.
2. Around 50% or more of the House GOP probably needs to vote for it, otherwise they'll close ranks, rather than letting it pass with Democratic votes over the objection of most Republicans
3. As Omar said, "You come at the king, you best not miss." Given #1 and 2, they won't impeach unless they have the votes to convict. Assuming you get nearly 100%, if not 100%, of Democrats, the GOP even has quite a bit of wriggle room to let some vulnerable incumbents preserve their status among the Trumpkins.

The question is then about the likelihood of those conditions being satisfied.

In my opinion, the GOP is making a mistake, however, if they think they can impeach and convict and have a result that leaves them coming out ahead, or even merely staunches the bleeding. Trump will fight back, for one. And for another... he won't stop lashing out just because you've removed him from power. He will do everything he can to destroy the people who betrayed him, even if he's doing it from Twitter in Trump Tower, instead of from the White House. Maybe they think they can make him the fall guy for their unpopular agenda... but you can bet Trump will blame them for the failure of their agenda (and he'll actually be right) if he's kicked out of office.

They must really want to starve granny, oppress workers and watch children die from preventable diseases due to lack of health insurance. It's the only explanation for why they're not standing up to him now, even when he's doing things like appointing Ben Carson to HUD and putting Rick Perry in charge of the nukes which probably don't fall under things they actually want to happen.

That said, while I do think impeachment under a scenario similar to Reich describes is possible, it's also quite possible they lose their nerve and/or they decide that the biggest lesson of 2009-2016 is to never allow any bipartisanship, and try to rely on pure partisan tribalism to protect them from the damage of the Trump presidency and their own horrific agenda. They may decide it's better to go down with Trump and hope they hold onto the 42% or so of tribal Republicans by never granting the Democrats an inch.

That, of course, depends highly on what the polls tell them. It is possible that Trump will become so unpopular that they conclude that removing Trump is the more palatable option. But the GOP has such a concentration of crazy that it might be pretty hard for Trump to stop having at least plurality support within the party...
